To give a Samsung T9 its best chance of reaching its rated sequential speeds, connect it to a host port and cable that both support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps), and make sure UASP is enabled. A USB-C connector alone does not confirm 20Gbps support. Samsung’s speed figures are maximum ratings under specified conditions, not a guarantee for every computer or file transfer.
What you need for the T9’s maximum rated speeds
Samsung says the T9 can reach maximum sequential read and write speeds only when the host device and connection cable support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and UASP mode is enabled. Check all three parts of the connection: the computer’s port and controller, the cable’s data capability, and UASP support.

- Host: Use a port documented as USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps). A USB-C-shaped port may support a different USB speed, so check the computer or motherboard specifications.
- Cable: Start with the genuine Samsung USB Type-C cable supplied with the drive. If it is unavailable or damaged, choose a replacement explicitly rated for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 data; USB-C describes the connector, not the data rate. Samsung warns that non-genuine cables can cause recognition problems or reduced performance.
- UASP: Confirm that the host supports and enables UASP. Samsung’s installation guide notes that performance can be reduced without it, even when connected over USB 3.2 Gen 2.
Samsung’s product specification states: “To reach maximum sequential read/write speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s, respectively, the host device and connection cables must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and the UASP mode must be enabled.” Samsung’s announcement also cautions that performance varies with host configuration, cable, and system environment.
Know what Samsung’s speed ratings mean
Samsung’s 2023 announcement lists these maximum sequential ratings for the T9:

These are manufacturer ratings, not independent results or promises for every workload. Samsung’s listed test system used an ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI motherboard, an Intel i9-10900K processor, 8GB of DDR4 memory, and Windows 11 Pro. Check your setup in this order
- Identify the host port. Look up the exact port or controller in your computer or motherboard documentation and confirm USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps). Do not infer its capability from the USB-C shape.
- Connect the supplied Samsung cable directly. Avoid adding hubs or other connections while checking the basic setup. If you need a replacement cable, verify its stated data rate, not just its connector type. Samsung’s T9 product information recommends the genuine supplied cable.
- Check UASP support. Confirm that the host supports UASP and that it is enabled. Samsung’s Portable SSD Installation Guide explains the connection requirements and warns that lack of UASP can limit performance.
- Compare the complete configuration with Samsung’s conditions. If transfers still fall short of the rating, verify the port/controller, cable, and UASP rather than assuming the drive itself is faulty. Samsung’s sources do not establish a universal result for every computer, operating system, file size, or workload.
- Check drive status and firmware in Samsung Magician. Magician provides drive-health and firmware functions. Review the release notes for any available update; an update is not a promised speed increase. See Samsung Magician and the Samsung UK T9 support page for support and software listings.
When an upgrade might help
If your existing computer lacks USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, it can still connect to the T9 through a compatible lower-speed connection, but it cannot meet Samsung’s stated maximum-speed conditions. For a desktop, a PCIe expansion card with the required interface may be an option only if the motherboard slot, operating system, and other system requirements support that specific card. Check its specifications and compatibility before buying; no particular adapter is established here as universally compatible.

A cable replacement is worth considering only if the supplied cable is missing or damaged, and the replacement must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 data. Changing to another USB-C cable without verifying its data rate does not establish that the connection will reach the T9’s maximum.
