Choose MacBook memory for the apps and projects you run at the same time; choose SSD storage for the files and apps you want available on the Mac. They solve different problems: extra storage cannot make up for memory pressure, and an external SSD does not add memory. Your best capacity depends on your workload, local-file needs, and the exact MacBook model.
Memory and storage do different jobs
- Unified memory supports macOS and the apps and projects you are actively using. When memory is under pressure, macOS may use the startup disk for swap.
- SSD storage holds macOS, apps, and files. More storage gives you more room for local files, but it does not increase the memory available to active work.
- External storage can hold files and libraries you do not need on the internal drive. You need the drive connected to access files stored on it, and it does not expand unified memory.
Apple does not publish a universal formula that maps a job title or type of user to a memory or storage capacity. Base your choice on the apps you actually use, their published requirements, the size of your active projects, and how much you need available offline.

How much memory should you choose?
Everyday browsing, documents, and streaming
For browsing, communication, documents, and streaming, start by checking the base memory configuration of the exact MacBook model you plan to buy. Do not treat one model’s base configuration as a standard for every MacBook, or assume a specific amount will guarantee smooth performance indefinitely.
Heavy multitasking and demanding projects
If you regularly keep many apps open, work with large creative projects, develop software, run virtual machines, or use local AI workloads, check the published requirements of your apps and watch memory pressure during your most demanding typical workflow. Consider a higher-memory configuration if pressure repeatedly reaches yellow or red during that work. Apple’s guidance does not specify a universal numeric memory requirement for these workloads.

A large photo or video library does not, by itself, establish that you need more memory. Long-term library size is primarily a storage question; active editing and other simultaneous work are what to assess when choosing memory.
Choosing among current configurations
Capacity options depend on the model, chip, and regional listing. Apple’s UK MacBook Air specifications show configurations starting with 16GB or 24GB of unified memory, with configurable increases up to 32GB. Apple’s MacBook Pro page lists M5 Pro configurations starting at 24GB and M5 Max configurations starting at 36GB, with higher options. These are model-specific examples, not recommendations for every buyer; confirm the exact configuration on Apple’s listing for your region before purchasing.

How much storage should you choose?
Estimate the space you need for macOS, apps, downloads, documents, and locally stored photos or video, then account for the projects and files you expect to add. A larger internal SSD is useful when you want more of that material available on the Mac without connecting a drive or relying on an internet connection.

When an external SSD makes sense
An external SSD can be a practical place for media libraries, archives, or project files that do not need to stay on the internal drive. Apple explains how to move files or media libraries, including Photos and iMovie libraries, to another storage device in its Mac storage guidance. Files kept externally are available only when the drive is accessible; an external drive is not necessarily suitable for every app or active workflow.
Moving files off the Mac frees internal storage, not memory. Keep an independent backup plan for important files; Apple’s storage guidance does not prescribe a particular backup configuration.

Using iCloud to manage local space
Apple also describes optimizing storage with iCloud. This can reduce how much content is kept locally, but files stored in iCloud use space from your iCloud storage plan. It is not the same as adding internal SSD capacity, and access to cloud-stored material depends on having it available when needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to tell whether an existing Mac needs more memory
Do not judge memory needs by the amount of “free” memory alone. Apple notes that macOS manages memory efficiently, and unused memory does not necessarily improve performance. In Activity Monitor, the Memory pane shows memory use and swapping; Apple says, “The Memory Pressure graph lets you know if your computer is using memory efficiently.”

- Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory pane.
- Use the Mac as you normally do during a demanding session, with the apps and projects that matter to you open.
- Watch Memory Pressure and check whether particular apps are consuming substantial memory or coincide with pressure spikes.
- Interpret the graph: green indicates efficient memory use; yellow means the Mac might eventually need more memory; red means it needs more, according to Apple.
- If an app is driving yellow, red, or spiking pressure and you no longer need it, quit it and see whether pressure subsides. If yellow or red pressure recurs during ordinary demanding work, consider whether a higher-memory Mac is appropriate.
Apple says pressure reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file-cached memory. Look at the overall pattern during real work rather than drawing a conclusion from one reading.

If you see a storage warning or want to understand what is filling the internal drive, open System Settings > General > Storage. Apple’s storage guide explains how to view space by category and manage it by removing files, moving them to another drive, or using available optimization options.
Low startup-disk space can also contribute to a slow Mac, though it is only one possible cause. Apple includes insufficient startup-disk space in its slow Mac troubleshooting guidance and recommends moving files to another disk or external storage. Check storage and memory separately: one issue does not prove the other.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- List your real workload. Include the apps you keep open together and the largest projects you regularly work on.
- Check app requirements. For demanding software, use its published requirements rather than assuming a capacity from your job title.
- Estimate local storage. Consider current documents, apps, downloads, and media, plus expected growth and whether you need them offline.
- Decide what can live elsewhere. If archives or libraries can stay on an external SSD or be optimized through iCloud, you may need less internal space, with the trade-offs in access and connectivity.
- Compare exact configurations. Check the memory and SSD options for the specific MacBook model, chip, and region; Air and Pro models do not share one universal baseline.
- For an existing Mac, measure before upgrading. Use Activity Monitor during typical demanding work and Storage settings to identify what is actually constrained.
