To find the cause of slow performance, compare an Ethernet speed test at the router with Wi-Fi tests on the same device, first nearby and then where speeds usually drop. Those comparisons help separate an internet or wired-path bottleneck from a wireless, location, or client-device problem.
1. Record a consistent baseline
Before changing settings, write down your internet plan’s expected speeds, the test time, the device, its location, and whether it is connected by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Run multiple tests using the same method. Comparing different devices, locations, or test methods can make results misleading; there is no single universal Wi-Fi 7 benchmark or speed-test tool.

2. Compare Ethernet with nearby Wi-Fi
If possible, connect a computer by Ethernet to the router and run an internet speed test. Then test Wi-Fi on that same computer near the router. Check the full wired path, including cables and ports between the modem, router, switch, and computer: the slowest Ethernet component can constrain throughput.
- Both tests are slow: The issue may be the internet service or a wired segment. Check for a service issue, confirm your plan, and inspect the modem-to-router and router-to-device connections before tuning Wi-Fi.
- Ethernet is healthy but nearby Wi-Fi is slow: Focus on the wireless connection, client capability, or interference.
Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cables for internet speeds above 100 Mbps. Check the ratings of your existing cables and ports before replacing anything; a new cable will not improve speeds if the current wired path is already adequate. 3. Check the client device and its connection
A Wi-Fi 7 router does not give an older or less capable device support for newer Wi-Fi features. Actual performance depends on both ends of the connection. Test a second reasonably current device in the same location and, where possible, on the same band. If the router or device shows which band is in use, note it: a device connected on 2.4 GHz may not reach speeds available on 5 GHz.
Check the device specifications for its supported Wi-Fi generation and, if relevant, Multi-Link Operation (MLO). MLO is not a universal speed switch: it depends on client support, and router implementation can vary by model and firmware. 4. Compare a nearby location with the problem area
Using the same client and connection band, test close to the router and again at the usual slow location. A substantial difference is consistent with distance, walls, building materials, or other obstructions affecting coverage. If practical, place the router in a central, open position rather than behind substantial barriers, then repeat the tests.
5. Check household traffic and wireless interference
Pause unnecessary high-bandwidth activity for a controlled test. If speeds improve, household network use may be contributing to the slowdown. Nearby wireless networks and other radio-frequency devices can also affect connection quality. Google suggests trying a manual channel if automatic selection has not resolved slow or unreliable Wi-Fi. 6. Test channel width rather than choosing the widest setting
A wider channel can increase maximum connection speed, but it can also increase interference. Compare measured speed and stability at the problem location after changing channel width; the widest available option is not automatically best in a congested environment. After recording your baseline, restart the network once and repeat the same tests. If wired tests and results on multiple devices remain below your service expectation, contact your ISP with the test results and ask about service issues or plan limits. If only one device is slow, investigate that device’s supported Wi-Fi features, software or drivers, and saved connection settings.

Use the comparisons to narrow the cause
