For everyday browsing, documents, email, video calls and school or office work, 16GB of unified memory is a sensible starting point. Consider 24GB or 32GB if you regularly handle demanding creative projects, memory-heavy development tools or virtual machines. For storage, choose based on how much you need to keep on the Mac itself: large photo libraries, offline files and active project media can make a smaller internal SSD inconvenient.
How much memory should you get?
Memory (RAM) affects how a Mac handles apps and tasks running at the same time. The right amount depends on your workload; Apple lists available configurations but does not set universal memory requirements for particular jobs.

| Unified memory | Who should consider it |
|---|---|
| 16GB | A sensible starting point for browsing, documents, email, video calls, streaming and ordinary school or office work. |
| 24GB | A middle option for heavier multitasking, larger creative workloads or buyers who expect their needs to grow. |
| 32GB | Consider it for sustained demanding creative work, software development with memory-heavy tools, virtual machines or other tasks that regularly press memory capacity. |
These are workload-based buying recommendations, not performance guarantees. A specific amount of memory does not guarantee that a particular editing, coding or AI workload will run well.
Is 16GB enough for a MacBook Air?
For everyday tasks, 16GB is a reasonable baseline. If you routinely keep many demanding apps open or work with large photo or video projects, consider 24GB or 32GB instead. Base configurations and upgrade options vary by model and generation, so check the exact MacBook Air build rather than assuming every listing offers the same tiers.

How to tell whether an existing Mac needs more memory
Use Activity Monitor rather than treating the amount of memory currently in use as a diagnosis. Open Activity Monitor’s Memory pane and check Memory Pressure. Apple says green means the Mac is using memory efficiently, yellow means it might eventually need more RAM, and red means it needs more RAM. The pane also shows memory compression and swapping between memory and the startup disk. As Apple notes, “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.”
How much storage should you get?
Storage is about where files live, not how many apps can run at once. Estimate how much space you need for installed apps, offline documents, photo and video libraries, and current projects, then leave room for new files and system use.

- A smaller internal SSD may work if most large files can stay in cloud storage or on an external drive and you do not need them all available locally.
- Choose more internal storage if you want large libraries and active projects on the Mac, or prefer not to carry an external drive or rely on another storage service.
There is no single answer to whether 256GB or 512GB is enough: it depends on the capacity offered for the exact model, how much you keep offline and the size of your projects. Apple’s current MacBook Air technical specifications list SSD configurations starting at 512GB, with higher options up to 4TB depending on model. Those are current listed configurations, not a guarantee that every model, region or retailer build has those choices.

A portable USB-C SSD can hold additional files, such as photo libraries or project media, and may help when you do not need everything on the internal drive. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports with USB 4 support on its current MacBook Air specifications. That is an interface fit, not a claim that a particular third-party drive has been tested. Before buying, check the drive’s connector, capacity, speed and compatibility with your exact Mac.

An external SSD adds file storage; it does not add unified memory or solve memory pressure. If the Mac struggles with memory-heavy work, adding a drive is not a substitute for choosing a suitable memory configuration.

A quick decision checklist
- Choose 16GB for ordinary browsing, documents, calls and school or office tasks.
- Consider 24GB or 32GB for demanding multitasking, large creative work, development tools or virtual machines.
- Choose internal storage based on the files and projects you want available on the Mac, not just the number of apps you install.
- Use an external SSD for files you can keep off the internal drive; it cannot increase memory.
- Verify the exact model and generation because available memory and SSD tiers vary.
