Apple’s 2026 configurations range from a Mac mini M6 with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD to a Mac Studio M5 Ultra configurable with 512GB of memory and 16TB of storage. There is no published universal minimum that makes one configuration right for every buyer.
Start with the work you do and where your files live
Memory and storage solve different problems. Unified memory is shared by the system and its apps while they are running, so your choice should reflect demanding applications, projects, virtual machines, browser workloads, and other tasks you use concurrently. Storage holds macOS, applications, and files. Estimate what needs to stay on the Mac separately from media, project files, and archives that could live on an external drive.

How much unified memory should you choose?
Everyday, student, and general development use
For ordinary desktop use, start by considering how much demanding work you do at once rather than choosing by the Mac’s name. A Mac mini M6 starts at 16GB and tops out at 32GB; this is the lower memory ceiling in the current lineup. If your work involves larger projects or you expect to run heavier applications concurrently, compare the higher-memory configurations before buying.

Creative, technical, and local-AI workloads
Apple positions the M5 Pro mini for app development, video rendering, scientific simulations, 3D design, visual effects, game development, local AI models, ProRes RAW, and large custom datasets. These are manufacturer-described use cases, not a promise that a particular tier will be enough for every project.

- Complete set of tools to tear down/dissemble your late 2018 Mac Mini
- Includes all special torx screwdrivers with security hole in center
- Disassemble or upgrade your ram/memory with this tool kit
- Specially designed and completely tested to work with late 2018 Mac Mini
When to look beyond the mini
If your actual projects may exceed 64GB of memory, the Mac Studio configurations provide more headroom: M5 Max goes up to 128GB and M5 Ultra up to 512GB. That difference matters for workloads with large memory requirements; it does not make Studio necessary for every creative or technical user. Base the decision on project sizes, the applications you keep open together, and the memory requirements of models or datasets you intend to use.
How much internal SSD storage should you choose?
Check the space currently used by applications, active work, and local media, then allow for likely growth. Apple’s listed internal SSD choices span 256GB to 2TB for M6 mini, 512GB to 8TB for M5 Pro mini and M5 Max Studio, and 1TB to 16TB for M5 Ultra Studio. Apple notes that formatted capacity is lower than the advertised decimal capacity, so do not plan around every advertised byte being available for files.

Consider a larger internal SSD if your working files need to remain on the computer or you want to keep substantial projects and libraries close at hand. If much of your capacity need is for files that can be stored separately, an external drive can be part of the storage plan instead.
When external storage makes sense
Apple points to superfast external storage over Thunderbolt 5 for the new systems. Mac Studio’s specifications list Thunderbolt 5 ports supporting up to 120Gb/s. A Thunderbolt external SSD can be a practical place for project files, media, or archives that do not need to reside on the internal drive; it remains a separate device, not built-in SSD capacity. Apple describes this option in its September 22, 2026 announcement and Mac Studio technical specifications.
Best Value
- Large Capacity: This 1TB SSD, designed for the Mac Mini, offers massive storage for files, apps, and media.
- High-Speed Performance: Read/write speeds up to 3300 MB/s, ensuring faster boot times, app launches, and file transfers.

Before choosing a particular drive, verify its compatibility and performance for your intended Mac and workflow. The general support for Thunderbolt external storage does not establish the speed, durability, or suitability of any specific drive.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- List your concurrent workload. Note the most demanding apps, projects, virtual machines, browser use, and local models or datasets you expect to run together.
- Set a memory ceiling. Compare your needs with the chosen model’s listed options. If the workload may exceed 64GB, the Studio’s 128GB M5 Max or 512GB M5 Ultra configurations provide higher listed ceilings.
- Estimate internal storage. Add the operating system and apps to the active files and media you want on the Mac, then account for future growth and the lower formatted capacity.
- Separate active work from archives. Decide which files must be internal and which can be kept on a compatible external Thunderbolt drive.
- Choose the model that meets both limits. Compare memory and internal SSD ceilings independently; a machine with enough storage does not automatically have enough memory, or vice versa.
