MacOS accounted for 1.92% of respondents in Steam’s combined-platform Hardware & Software Survey in September 2026. That is a share of the survey—not a count of all Mac owners who play games, Steam purchases, or gaming hours. Valve says participation is optional and anonymous, so treat the figure as a snapshot of surveyed Steam customers’ computer configurations.
What percentage of Steam users are on Mac?
Steam’s September 2026 combined Windows, Mac, and Linux survey view listed macOS as “OSX” at 1.92%, down 0.22 percentage points from the previous month. The figure describes that month’s survey respondents, not all Steam users or the broader gaming market. Because participation is optional and anonymous, a single monthly change should not be read as proof of a lasting trend.

Which Macs appear in Steam’s Mac-only survey?
The Mac-only view uses a different denominator: its percentages describe respondents using a Mac, not all Steam survey participants.

| Model summary | MacBookPro — 16.54% | The largest model-summary category in the Mac-only view; it is a category, not one specific MacBook Pro model. |
| Memory | 16 GB — 43.55%; 8 GB — 28.66% | The most common and second-most common reported memory categories in the Mac-only view. |
| Graphics | Apple M4 — 17.89% | The leading named graphics entry in the Mac-only view, not the total share of Apple Silicon Macs. |
| Processor vendor | GenuineIntel — 10.20% | A value in the separate Mac-only processor-vendor table. |
These figures describe the hardware categories represented among surveyed Mac users. They do not show which Mac is best for gaming, how well any model runs a particular game, or what memory a game requires.

Does Steam show Apple Silicon gaining share?
Not conclusively. The Mac-only survey lists Apple M4 as a graphics entry, while a separate processor-vendor table lists GenuineIntel at 10.20%. Those tables describe different hardware fields, so their percentages cannot be combined into an Apple Silicon adoption estimate. The available figures also do not establish a complete Apple Silicon total or a year-over-year trend.
To compare Macs for a specific game, you would need evidence for that game and exact machine: supported macOS version, whether it runs natively or through a compatibility layer, chip and graphics workload, resolution and settings, measured frame rate, memory requirements, and any launcher or anti-cheat constraints. Steam’s survey is a configuration snapshot, not a performance benchmark or comprehensive compatibility list.

What Apple’s gaming features add—and what they do not prove
Apple’s macOS Tahoe feature document, published in September 2025, describes a Games app with a Gaming Hub, challenges, a library, personalized recommendations, and an overlay. These are interface and service features; they are not evidence that a particular game is compatible with a Mac or performs well on one.
In the same document, Apple says Apple Arcade offers access to “over 200 award-winning games with no ads or in-app purchases.” That is Apple’s description of the service in its September 2025 feature document, not an independently verified current catalog count.

How to read Mac gaming statistics
- Keep the denominator attached. The 1.92% figure is macOS’s share of the combined-platform Steam survey in September 2026; the Mac-only percentages apply only to surveyed Mac respondents.
- Separate adoption from performance. A hardware category’s frequency says nothing by itself about frame rates, graphics settings, or game compatibility.
- Do not infer a trend from one month. Steam runs a monthly survey, and the optional participation makes the result a recurring snapshot rather than a complete census.
- Keep developer surveys separate from player data. The 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry report includes developer platform results, but those measure developer activity and interest—not Mac player counts or Steam activity.
