Show parents a clear route to urgent updates, term dates, contact details, admissions and the practical information they use regularly. Keep the homepage focused: it should direct families to the right page, not display every policy or document at once.
“Above the fold” is not a fixed screen height. What appears before scrolling changes with the device, viewport, zoom and text size, so prioritize what matters rather than trying to fit a prescribed number of links on one screen.

What should appear near the top of a school website?
A useful starting order is school identity, any urgent notice, key parent tasks and a visible route for prospective families. Adjust that order to the school’s current needs, while keeping both current and prospective families in mind.

Make the school name and location clear, with a short factual description that helps parents confirm they are in the right place.
- Urgent notice, when needed. Put a current closure, schedule change or other time-sensitive update where visitors can find it quickly. Include its date and remove or update it when it is no longer relevant. This is practical editorial advice, not a legal requirement established by the sources cited here.
- Frequently used parent links. Make term dates or the calendar, contact details, uniform information and school hours easy to find. Use familiar, literal labels rather than vague wording.
- Admissions or enquiries. Give prospective families a clear next step, such as an admissions, enquiry or visit link, if the school accepts those enquiries.
- Links to deeper information. Provide clear routes to SEND support, policies and other required information without placing every document on the homepage.
This is a starting point, not a universal template. A school dealing with an urgent disruption may put its notice first; one seeking to reach prospective families may give admissions greater prominence. In either case, keep the route to both everyday parent information and admissions findable.

How should a school choose what gets priority?
Compare homepage items by audience, urgency, frequency of use and usability. These are practical decision factors, not a published scoring system.
- Audience: Is the information for current families, prospective families or both?
- Urgency: Does it need attention now, or is it stable reference information?
- Frequency: Do parents need it repeatedly, such as dates or contact details, or only occasionally?
- Findability and access: Can people locate and use it on a phone, with a keyboard, and with assistive technology?
Schudio’s 2026 report says it analyzed 753 live school websites and found contact details easy to find on 97% of those reviewed. The report also identifies admissions, term dates, uniform, contact, latest news, and—in some families’ searches—SEND information and the latest Ofsted report as common destinations. This is a vendor-produced audit of those websites, not a universal survey of parents or schools.

What belongs on linked pages instead?
Use the homepage as an entry point to well-organized information, rather than a document dump. Detailed policies and statutory information are easier to navigate when grouped on clearly labeled pages and linked from the homepage.

Requirements depend on jurisdiction and school type. The Department for Education’s guidance for maintained schools in England, last updated 24 October 2024, covers information those schools must or should publish online, including contact details, admissions, opening hours, uniform, curriculum and SEND information. Do not assume those requirements apply to academies, independent schools or schools in other countries; check the guidance that applies to the school.

Make navigation predictable and content understandable, not just visually prominent. W3C WAI recommends orientation cues, including clear headings, and consistent navigation and sufficient foreground/background contrast in its web accessibility tips.
- Use descriptive headings and link names that explain where they lead.
- Keep navigation labels and placement consistent across pages.
- Check that text and background colors have sufficient contrast.
- Test the homepage on a narrow screen and with enlarged text or zoom.
- Check keyboard operation and screen-reader behavior instead of relying only on a visual desktop review.
The Department for Education’s School profiles accessibility statement, prepared 9 September 2026, describes keyboard navigation, screen-reader access, zoom and plain language for that government service. It also reports WCAG 2.2 AA issues on that service; those findings do not establish the accessibility status of school websites generally.
