For one 4K stream, the answer depends on the service: Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or higher, YouTube recommends a sustained 20 Mbps, and Disney+ recommends 25 Mbps. For multiple TVs streaming 4K at the same time, multiply the relevant service figure by the number of concurrent streams, then allow extra capacity for other household use and normal connection variation. Those totals are planning estimates, not guaranteed minimums or universal broadband-plan recommendations.
How much speed does one 4K stream need?
Use the recommendation for the service you watch. The figures below come from the services themselves and are not a single universal 4K standard.

| Service | Published 4K recommendation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 15 Mbps or higher for UHD 4K | Netflix Help Center |
| YouTube | 20 Mbps sustained for 4K UHD | YouTube Help |
| Disney+ | 25 Mbps for 4K UHD | Disney+ Help Center (page dated 2024-09-30) |
The recommendations differ because they are service-specific guidance. They should not be read as proof that every title, device, or household uses the same bandwidth, or as a guarantee that a connection at the stated speed will always play without interruption.

How to estimate speed for multiple TVs
Count only the TVs or devices that will actually be streaming 4K simultaneously. Multiply the per-stream figure for the service being watched by that concurrent stream count. The results below are simple arithmetic from the published per-stream recommendations; the services do not publish these as multi-TV minimums.

| Concurrent 4K streams | Using Netflix’s 15 Mbps figure | Using YouTube’s 20 Mbps figure | Using Disney+’s 25 Mbps figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 Mbps | 20 Mbps | 25 Mbps |
| 2 | 30 Mbps | 40 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 3 | 45 Mbps | 60 Mbps | 75 Mbps |
For example, if two TVs might stream 4K on Disney+ at once, 50 Mbps is the arithmetic starting point before accounting for video calls, downloads, gaming, or other simultaneous use. A household’s practical target therefore may need to be higher. The right amount depends on what else is using the connection and how consistently the broadband service delivers speed at viewing time.
Why advertised plan speed may not match playback
A broadband plan’s advertised download rate is not necessarily the sustained speed available at the TV. The cited services call for stable or sustained connections, so check the actual connection where and when you watch rather than relying only on the plan label.

- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Other TVs streaming at the same time add demand; count simultaneous streams rather than the total number of TVs in the home.
- Large downloads, online games, and video calls also use capacity and can affect playback when they overlap with streaming.
- Wi-Fi coverage and the TV or streaming device’s connection can be a bottleneck even when the broadband connection itself is fast enough.
- Upload speed is relevant to activities such as calls or content creation, but the cited 4K playback recommendations concern receiving video; they do not set an upload-speed requirement for watching.
What to check if a 4K stream buffers
- Measure near the TV during normal viewing hours. Compare the sustained result with the recommendation for the service and quality setting in use.
- Check what else is online. See whether another TV, a large download, a game, or a video call is using bandwidth at the same time.
- Check the local connection. Review Wi-Fi coverage and whether the TV or streaming device supports the service and its 4K playback. YouTube says a wired connection may help; its guidance is at System requirements and supported devices for YouTube.
- Use the service’s available network tools. Netflix offers an in-app network check on supported TV-connected devices, as described in its internet speed guidance.
If a wired connection is practical, it may help when Wi-Fi between the router and TV is the weak link. It cannot increase the speed your internet provider delivers, and it requires an Ethernet connection on the TV or streaming device and a way to connect it to the router.

Compare the sustained download speed available at your address, reliability during busy hours, data limits, price, and the number of streams and other activities likely to run at once.
