That is a documented production-engine rating, not a horsepower limit for every 427 small-block. Output depends on which engine family and build you mean.
What does “427 small-block” mean?
“427” describes displacement: 427 cubic inches. “Small-block” identifies an engine family and architecture, not a promise that the engine is small compared with every other Chevrolet V8. Chevrolet traces the Small Block V8 to 1954; it debuted for the 1955 model year as a 265-cubic-inch engine. Chevrolet’s Small Block history explains that family lineage.

The name can refer to different engines. A classic Gen I-based aftermarket 427, the later LS7, and Chevrolet’s familiar 427 big-blocks are not interchangeable. Their ratings should not be used as stand-ins for one another.
How much horsepower does a factory 427 small-block make?
LS7: 505 hp
General Motors Heritage identifies the LS7 in the 2007 Corvette Z06 as a “427 cid small block V8,” rated at 505 hp at 5,500 rpm. This is the clearest factory-rated answer to how much power a Chevrolet 427 small-block made. GM Heritage’s LS7 entry documents the engine and rating.

- MECHANIC'S ESSENTIAL - The complete 12-piece set tackles oil seals, gaskets, hoses, and O-rings - a must-have for auto shops, DIYers, and industrial maintenance teams working on cars, trucks, and machinery
This establishes a production example, not a universal ceiling. The LS7 rating also should not be assigned automatically to a different 427 build. GM Heritage describes the featured 1970 Chevelle as originally built with a 396 and later repowered with the LS7; that example does not show that Chevrolet sold a 1970 Chevelle from the factory with the 427 small-block.
Why do other Chevrolet 427s have different ratings?
The 1966 Corvette 427 was a big-block
GM Heritage lists the 1966 Corvette 427 at 390 hp or 425 hp. Its page identifies the engine as a 427-cubic-inch V8, not a small-block. Those figures belong to that big-block model-year Corvette, not to the LS7 or an aftermarket small-block build. GM Heritage’s 1966 Corvette page provides the ratings.

The ZZ427/480 is also a big-block
Chevrolet Performance’s ZZ427/480 is explicitly a big-block crate engine, rated at 480 hp at 6,000 rpm and 490 lb-ft at 3,800 rpm. The “427” in its name refers to displacement; it does not make the engine a small-block. See Chevrolet Performance’s ZZ427/480 listing for its specifications.

How much power can a custom 427 small-block make?
There is no single, source-supported horsepower maximum for custom 427 small-block builds. “427 SBC” can describe different combinations of block, parts, and tuning, so a number without a specific engine configuration or documented test would be misleading. The 505-hp LS7 rating is a useful factory reference, but it is not a verified rating for a Gen I-based aftermarket 427.

To compare custom builds, look for results tied to the exact engine and test conditions. Relevant details include the engine generation and block, naturally aspirated or power-adder setup, intended use and durability requirements, and whether the figure is a factory rating or a modified-build measurement. Do not rank engines by a claimed peak figure unless the configurations and measurement basis are comparable.

If you are selecting an engine for a project, first establish which family the listing describes; the displacement alone is not enough to confirm what will fit or suit the vehicle.

- Package Dimensions: 10.6 L x 0.3 H x 1.2 W (inches)
- Package Weight : 0.1 pounds
- Country of Origin : China
- Part number: 33500
- Identify the architecture: distinguish a Gen I-based small-block, an LS7, and a big-block such as the ZZ427/480.
- Confirm the exact package: check what the specific engine includes and whether the vehicle, mounts, and other components are compatible. Chevrolet Performance describes crate engines as fully assembled engines sold as standalone packages for project vehicles, hot rods, and custom builds.
- Check intended use and legality: Chevrolet Performance warns that emissions-related parts may not meet applicable public-road regulations and may be intended exclusively for competition use. Verify the specific product and local rules before installation.
Chevrolet’s Small Block Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Kociba described the LS6 as “leaning into our Small Block history with a big-displacement, high-compression V8,” underscoring that small-block is a family designation rather than a displacement cap. Chevrolet News, April 9, 2026 includes the statement.
