Robert Rapier’s October 6 analysis puts Marathon Petroleum up 55.1%, Phillips 66 up 51.8% and Valero Energy up 49.4% for the quarter. The figures are historical returns, not a signal that refiners will keep leading.
Energy led the quarter, though sources report different returns
Robert Rapier reported that the Energy sector gained 16.5% in Q3 2026, compared with 2.0% for the S&P 500. Clearstead’s quarterly review, using Bloomberg data through September 30, reports Energy up 17.2% and the S&P 500 up 2.3%. Both accounts identify Energy as a leading sector, but the figures differ; the available material does not establish a shared calculation basis. These are separate source-reported figures, not interchangeable measurements.

Axios also described energy stocks as among the strongest U.S. assets in the quarter, with oil, diesel and interest rates shaping markets. That context supports the broader story, but it does not independently verify the individual refiner returns. Axios’s October 1 market overview captures the uncertainty in its headline quote: “Oil and rates giveth, and taketh away.”

Independent refiners posted the largest reported gains
Rapier’s October 6 analysis reports these Q3 2026 returns. The article excerpt does not specify whether they are price returns or total returns, so they should be read as reported rather than as a uniform audited comparison.

| Company | Q3 2026 return reported by Robert Rapier |
|---|---|
| Marathon Petroleum | +55.1% |
| Phillips 66 | +51.8% |
| Valero Energy | +49.4% |
Rapier says the three averaged more than 52%. Their returns were far above the sector figures he cites, but one quarter’s performance does not establish what they will earn or how their shares will perform next.
Why refining margins mattered
Refiners buy crude oil and sell products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. A key part of their operating economics is the spread between the cost of crude inputs and the value of the products they sell. That spread is often discussed as a refining margin or crack spread. A rise in crude prices by itself does not necessarily benefit a refiner: the value of refined products relative to crude costs matters.

Rapier attributes the strong refiner performance to wider margins as disruptions to Russian and Middle Eastern refining capacity constrained transportation-fuel supplies. He highlights particularly strong diesel margins and high U.S. refinery utilization by September. When fuel supply tightens relative to demand, refiners may be able to sell products at stronger margins; that is different from simply betting on a higher crude price.
Energy businesses did not move as one group
Rapier’s reported averages show that the quarter’s gains varied across parts of the energy chain. These are averages for the groups in his analysis, not sector-wide totals or a common audited sample.
Rank #3
- Walthers Cornerstone United Petroleum Refining Kit
| Business group | Average Q3 2026 return reported by Robert Rapier | Main exposure described |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated majors tracked | About +19.9% | Combined upstream production, refining and other operations |
| E&P companies in Rapier’s sample | About +13.1% | Oil and natural-gas production |
| Midstream group in Rapier’s sample | About +12.0% | Pipeline and related infrastructure businesses |
Rapier also describes stronger tanker returns and weaker results among several gas-focused producers and pipeline operators. Different energy businesses respond to different factors: producers are more directly exposed to commodity prices, refiners to the relationship between crude costs and product prices, and pipeline operators or tanker companies to their own operating and transport dynamics. “Energy” is therefore not one uniform bet on crude.

Refining is cyclical. Rapier identifies several ways elevated margins could fade:
Rank #4
- New in manufacturer packaging.
- Realistic Detail.
- Robust materials.
- Original packaging.
- Scale Miniature for For Model Trains and Dioramas.
- Supply responds: More available refining capacity or transportation fuel can ease the tightness that supported margins.
- Disrupted capacity returns: Restored operations in affected regions can add product supply.
- Demand weakens: Lower fuel demand can reduce product values and pressure margins.
Geopolitical events and interest-rate developments can also shift energy prices and broader market valuations, as Axios noted in its account of Q3. The quarter’s winners are a record of what happened, not a forecast of what happens next.
