Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery Expands to AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm Devices

Advanced Shader Delivery can reduce shader-compilation waits, but it requires a supported game, GPU and driver, Windows version, and storefront.

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is designed to reduce shader-compilation waits and related stutter by preparing shader data for a game and hardware configuration ahead of play. Microsoft says the technology has expanded beyond its initial handheld rollout, with Gears of War: E-Day the first game supporting ASD across Windows devices using AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm hardware. That is not blanket support for every GPU or game: the Windows version, GPU and driver, game, and storefront must all be compatible.

Why does a PC compile shaders when a game starts?

Shaders are small programs games use to render graphics. A game may compile them on the player’s device during startup or as new content appears during play. That work can lengthen initial loading and cause shader-compilation stutter; Microsoft also notes that on-device compilation can use more power. These are specific shader-related delays, not an explanation for every kind of game stutter.

What is Advanced Shader Delivery?

ASD is a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology that lets a game use shader data compiled in advance for a game and hardware configuration. Instead of doing as much compilation locally when the player first launches the game, a supported setup can retrieve the prepared data from the Windows cache. Microsoft first introduced ASD for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, where shaders are delivered around game download and cached for first launch.

Does Advanced Shader Delivery work on NVIDIA, Intel, and Qualcomm GPUs?

Microsoft’s October 2026 announcement names AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm in the expanded Windows device ecosystem supported by ASD, with Gears of War: E-Day identified as the first game supporting that broader rollout. This is ecosystem-level support, not a guarantee for every GPU model, driver, game, or store. Check the specific game listing and current Microsoft overview for the supported Windows version, compatible GPU and driver, and storefront requirements before assuming a PC qualifies.

  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Earlier vendor statements help explain the rollout but should not be mistaken for a current compatibility list. In March 2026, Intel said its drivers supported ASD on Lunar Lake and Panther Lake. NVIDIA said it was working with Microsoft toward a GeForce RTX launch later in 2026, while Qualcomm said it was partnering to bring the feature to Adreno X2 GPUs. Those were statements at that time; Microsoft’s October announcement is the newer ecosystem-level update.

Which games support Advanced Shader Delivery?

Microsoft names Gears of War: E-Day as the first game supporting ASD across the expanded Windows device ecosystem. The announcement does not establish that other games or storefront versions support it. Compatibility depends not just on the game title but also on the particular game package and storefront integration. Verify the current listing for the edition and store you use.

How do I enable Advanced Shader Delivery?

ASD is not described as a universal Windows switch that players can turn on for any game. Microsoft’s published requirements include a supported Windows version, an ASD-capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. The game and store must also provide the prepared shader data. If those pieces are absent, a player cannot make an unsupported game use ASD simply by changing a graphics setting.

For developers, Microsoft’s guidance calls for collecting a state object database (SODB) and submitting it with the game package through Xbox Partner Center. Players should use the relevant game listing and Microsoft’s live ASD overview to confirm requirements; exact OS, driver, and store details can vary by supported title and may change.

How much faster is shader compilation with ASD?

Microsoft’s October 2026 announcement reports an approximately 95% reduction in shader compilation time. Treat that as Microsoft’s reported result, not a promise for every PC or a result independently established for each vendor. The announcement summary does not specify a universal test setup, so the figure should not be used to predict a particular player’s load times or compare GPU brands.
