If a serious storm or other disruption may affect your area and fuel is available, fill up early rather than waiting for queues or outages. That is a readiness guideline—not a guaranteed evacuation range or a prediction of when stations will close.
Why keep at least half a tank?
Pumps may stop working during a power outage, and fuel lines can delay a departure. Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency’s Ready PA guidance says to keep a gas-powered vehicle’s tank at least half full at all times: Ready PA vehicle preparedness. Public Safety Canada gives the same threshold when there is a risk of a power outage: Get prepared for an evacuation.

How much is half a tank?
Use half of your own vehicle’s tank capacity as the reference point; there is no universal gallon amount that fits every car. The cited guidance gives a tank fraction, not a fixed volume, and it does not establish how far a particular car can travel on that fuel. Range depends on the vehicle and driving conditions, so do not treat the half-tank baseline as an evacuation-range guarantee.
Should you fill up before a storm?
If a storm may threaten your area and fuel is available, topping up early can reduce the chance that you need to refuel during a rush or after service is disrupted. Florida’s hurricane guidance recommends keeping vehicles at least half full during hurricane season and filling at least one vehicle once a storm may threaten the state: Florida hurricane supply checklist. This is Florida storm guidance; it is not an instruction to keep every vehicle full all year everywhere.

Keep the reserve in the tank, not in a can in the cabin
The half-tank recommendation is about fuel in the vehicle’s tank, not a reason to carry spare gasoline. Portable gasoline creates separate fire and exposure hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises storing it in a cool, well-ventilated place away from homes and ignition sources, and not in a house or basement; its guidance covers portable containers of five gallons or less: CPSC fuel container safety guide.
Leaked petrol vapour inside a vehicle can form an explosive fuel-air mixture. WorkSafe Tasmania advises securing containers upright and, where possible, carrying fuel outside the passenger cabin or boot: WorkSafe Tasmania petrol transport guidance. Transport and storage laws differ by location, so follow local rules, container labeling and manufacturer directions.

Follow local shortage or evacuation instructions
Authorities may issue instructions that supersede general preparedness advice. For example, Great Britain’s National Emergency Plan for Fuel describes possible measures during a severe shortage, including designated stations, priority distribution and purchase limits: UK National Emergency Plan for Fuel. The plan describes measures that could be used; it does not mean they are active now or apply outside Great Britain. Follow the directions of your own local authorities if a shortage plan or evacuation order is announced.

If you drive an electric vehicle
A petrol-tank fraction does not apply to an EV. Public Safety Canada separately advises keeping an electric vehicle charged when there is a risk of a power outage, in its evacuation guidance.
