1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—but support depends on the reader model, your library’s service and catalog, the ebook’s format, and its DRM. Newer Kobo color readers such as the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour have built-in OverDrive support, while many other library loans and purchased ebooks require a computer transfer or will not work on a different brand of reader.
What determines whether an ebook will work?
Four checks matter more than whether a reader has a color screen:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Device: Does the exact model support the library service or ebook format?
- Library and title: Does your library offer the book through a compatible service, and can that particular loan sync or be downloaded?
- Format: Is the file an EPUB, PDF, or another format the reader accepts?
- DRM: Is the file unprotected, protected with Adobe DRM, or tied to a retailer’s ecosystem?
These distinctions explain why a reader may open an EPUB but still be unable to open a particular purchased EPUB or library loan: format support alone does not remove DRM or transfer restrictions.

Libby and OverDrive identify the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour among newer Kobo eReaders with built-in OverDrive. On a compatible device, you can browse and borrow directly, or borrow in Libby and sync eligible ebooks to the Kobo over Wi-Fi. For syncing, use the same library card with OverDrive on the Kobo and Libby. Libby’s Kobo guidance says some ebooks will not sync; Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo. OverDrive’s eReader list also names the two color models.

When do library books need a computer transfer?
Some compatible library ebooks must be downloaded from the library’s OverDrive website and transferred with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), a computer, and a USB connection. This can be relevant for older Kobo models as well as certain loans on supported devices.

- On the library’s OverDrive website, borrow the title and download its EPUB or PDF if a download option is offered.
- Open the downloaded file in ADE on a Windows or Mac computer. A library download may be an
.acsmlicense file; ADE checks the license and downloads the authorized EPUB or PDF. - Authorize ADE and the eReader as needed, connect the reader to the computer, then transfer the ebook to the device.
Follow OverDrive’s transfer instructions and Kobo’s ADE guidance for the relevant device and software steps. The workflow only works when the loan offers a downloadable file and the reader supports its format and DRM. If the library provides no download option, ADE cannot create one.

Which ebook formats and DRM types can Kobo readers use?
Kobo lists support for formats including EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, and CBR, with some model-specific caveats. It supports Adobe DRM and Social DRM, but those protections do not work the same way. Kobo’s format list and export guidance explain the distinctions.

| File or protection | What to expect on a Kobo |

| Adobe DRM EPUB or PDF | Requires ADE to authorize and transfer the protected file. |

| Retailer-protected ebook | Support depends on the retailer’s DRM and authorized devices; an accepted file extension does not make a protected purchase portable. |
Kobo says most books purchased from its store are DRM-protected. Before moving ecosystems, check the purchase’s DRM status and whether the seller provides a transferable download.

Do not assume that a Kindle purchase can be moved to a Kobo just because Kobo supports a format such as EPUB. Amazon’s Kindle protection can restrict transfers to non-Kindle devices. A limited exception applies to confirmed DRM-free Kindle books: Amazon KDP says verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF copies effective January 20, 2026. That route does not apply to DRM-protected titles, and Amazon says it does not change files already downloaded.

Does Kindle library lending work outside the United States?
OverDrive states that Kindle Books are available to borrow only from U.S. libraries and schools. This is a geographic restriction on the Kindle Books lending option, not a general statement that every library ebook service is U.S.-only. Check which services and formats your own library offers. OverDrive’s eReader guide gives the current Kindle lending qualification.

PDF support means the file may open, not that it will behave like a reflowable ebook. OverDrive explains that PDFs use fixed layouts: text does not automatically reflow to the screen, and the same font-size adjustments available for EPUB may not apply. PDFs are often used for illustrated, textbook, and other fixed-layout material. For a text-heavy book, check whether the library offers EPUB as well. OverDrive’s format guide distinguishes Adobe EPUB, Open EPUB, Adobe PDF, and Open PDF.
Quick Recap
How to check compatibility before choosing a reader
- Check the library service and location. Confirm whether your library uses Libby/OverDrive and whether the service supports the borrowing method you intend to use. For Kindle loans, OverDrive’s availability is limited to U.S. libraries and schools.
- Check the exact eReader model. Look for built-in OverDrive support if you want to borrow and sync without a computer; otherwise, check whether the model supports ADE and USB transfer.
- Open the specific title’s loan options. Confirm that it can sync to the device or offers a downloadable EPUB/PDF. Some Libby ebooks do not sync to Kobo, and some library loans have no download option.
- Check your existing ebook’s format and DRM. A supported extension is not enough. Determine whether the file is DRM-free, uses Adobe or Social DRM, or remains locked to its original store.
- Consider layout as well as compatibility. A fixed-layout PDF may be cumbersome on a small screen even when the reader opens it successfully.
