On Android, codec settings may help when both the phone and headphones support the same option; on iPhone, use supported audio-personalization features such as Headphone Accommodations. A higher-quality codec is not a guaranteed audible upgrade, and an unstable connection can make listening worse.
Start with the checks that apply to any phone
Find out whether the problem is the headphones or the audio
Play a different track or file, then compare another app. If only one app or source sounds poor, the issue may be its playback settings or the particular recording or stream rather than Bluetooth. Bose recommends comparing apps and types of media when diagnosing low audio.

Check the headphone app
If your model has a companion app, look for equalizer (EQ), sound modes, fit or seal checks, and connection-quality settings. Availability and labels differ by manufacturer and model, so use the product’s instructions rather than assuming every pair has the same controls.

Refit in-ear earbuds
A loose or poor seal can reduce perceived bass and affect noise cancelling. Try the supplied ear-tip sizes and seat each earbud comfortably and securely. Bose advises finding the correct tip and stable fit; Sony likewise recommends trying tips that make a better seal when sound quality or bass is low. If you need replacement tips, check compatibility with your exact earbud model before buying.

Clean and check the wireless connection safely
- Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact headphone model. Debris can clog a wax guard, but do not poke mesh with sharp objects or apply liquids unless the manufacturer specifically directs you to.
- If audio crackles or cuts out, move the phone closer and test away from other wireless devices or a crowded wireless environment. Nearby wireless equipment can interfere with Bluetooth.
- If the problem continues, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps, which may include resetting the headphones.
Improve Bluetooth audio on Android
Understand codec compatibility before changing settings
A Bluetooth codec is the method used to encode audio for transmission. Android’s AOSP documentation explains that the phone and headphones negotiate a codec they both support; the phone cannot force a codec the headphones lack, and manufacturers can set their own codec priorities. The Android 8.0 A2DP implementation listed SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC, but that list is not a promise that every Android phone or headphone supports each one. Check the specifications for both devices. Android Open Source Project: Bluetooth services
Check for an HD Audio control first
- Open Settings and go to Bluetooth or the device’s connected-device settings.
- Select the paired headphones or open their settings, then look for an HD Audio toggle if your phone offers one.
- Try the available setting and listen to familiar audio. If connection stability worsens, switch back.
Android documents a user-facing HD Audio control, but manufacturers may move or rename Bluetooth settings. The control and its options depend on the phone and headphone combination. Android Open Source Project: Bluetooth services

- In continuous music playback, the working time reaches 15 hours. When the battery is low, it only takes 1 hour to charge up to 90%, close to full capacity!
- Weighing only 12.5g and measuring about 5.5cm, it offers two convenient carrying options: an elastic back clip and a lanyard, making it stress-free to carry!
- With a built-in high-performance independent ear amplifier and an output power of up to 45mW (16Ω), it allows earphones to deliver excellent performance, providing high-quality music comparable to wired connections via Bluetooth.
- It features a built-in high-sensitivity omnidirectional microphone that supports call noise reduction, ensuring a clear calling experience.
Use Developer options only if you need to inspect codec choices
Android’s developer documentation includes a Bluetooth Audio Codec selector and, for LDAC, playback-quality options that can prioritize audio quality, balance, connection quality, or adaptive bitrate. Developer options are intended for debugging and configuration; the exact path and available choices vary by device. Consult your phone maker’s instructions for enabling and navigating them. Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options
Start with the normal negotiated choice. If both devices support a higher-quality codec, you can try the manufacturer-supported option and compare it with your usual listening. Keep the setting only if it sounds preferable and the connection remains reliable. Higher bitrates can trade stability for audio quality, so an adaptive or more stable mode may be the better choice when you hear dropouts. Nothing’s adaptive-playback and dual-connection advice applies to its own product, not every LDAC headphone. Nothing Support: How do I use LDAC?

Changing sample rate or bit depth in Developer options is not a guaranteed sound-quality fix; focus on compatibility, stability, and whether you can hear a useful difference.
Improve Bluetooth headphone sound on iPhone
Try Headphone Accommodations with supported headphones
Apple describes Headphone Accommodations as a way to “Amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies for your hearing needs with Headphone Accommodations in iOS and iPadOS 14 and later.” The feature is an accessibility and personalization tool, not a universal system EQ for every Bluetooth headset. Apple’s supported list names specific AirPods, Beats, and EarPods models; check that list for your exact model. Apple Support: Customise headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad

Apple’s guidance covers iOS and iPadOS 14 and later. The exact controls depend on the supported headphones and software version.
Set codec expectations realistically
Do not expect an Android-style Bluetooth codec picker on iPhone. Nothing Support states that iOS supports AAC Bluetooth audio but not LDAC or other high-resolution codecs, and that LDAC requires support at both ends. Because compatibility can depend on the exact model and software, check the iPhone and headphone specifications rather than assuming an advertised codec will be available. How to tell whether a codec upgrade is worth trying
Codec choice is only one part of Bluetooth sound. Use the symptom and the device capabilities together to decide what to change:
| What to check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Phone and headphone codec support | A higher-quality codec is an option only when both devices support it; Android may also apply manufacturer-defined priorities. |
| Connection stability | Crackles or dropouts point toward range or interference, or a quality setting that is too demanding for the connection. |
| Earbud fit and seal | Weak bass or inconsistent noise cancelling on in-ear buds can be a fit issue rather than a codec issue. |
| EQ and accessibility options | These may help tailor frequencies or amplification when the phone and headphone model expose suitable controls. |
| Whether the issue spans apps and media | A problem limited to one app, track, or file may not be caused by the headphones or Bluetooth connection. |
There is no universal percentage improvement to expect from changing a codec or EQ. The result depends on the source, both devices, the connection, and what you can hear; compare settings with the same familiar audio rather than assuming a higher-resolution label guarantees a difference.
When to consider replacing headphones
Buying a new pair is not the first troubleshooting step. Consider replacement only if the current headphones lack a codec your phone can use and that capability matters to you, cannot achieve a comfortable fit, or remain faulty after app, source, cleaning, connection, and reset checks. Compare codec support at both ends, fit options, available EQ, and stability—not codec branding alone.
