PRISM’s basic desktop live-streaming features are free, so estimate electricity separately and add a subscription only if you need paid features. The calculation below gives you a figure based on your own setup rather than an invented “typical PC” bill.
Calculate the monthly electricity cost
Measure the complete PC’s average wall-power draw while it is running the PRISM scene and encoder settings you intend to use. Then apply:

Monthly electricity cost = average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours × electricity price per kWh.
For a 30-day month of uninterrupted streaming, use 720 hours. Enter your local tariff in the currency and units shown on your bill.

Do not use the power-supply unit’s rated wattage as the PC’s actual consumption; it is not a measurement of what the computer draws from the wall. A plug-in electricity meter or another suitable wall-power measurement can give you the needed input. Include a monitor, router/modem, lighting, or cooling only if those devices are part of the setup and their consumption is not already included in your measured total. If you measure the whole setup together, do not add those loads again.
There is no established standard wattage for an unspecified low-budget PC, and your electricity tariff depends on your location and plan. Without both figures, a specific monthly bill would be guesswork. Internet cost is also plan-specific: include an actual upgrade, overage, or data-cap charge only if it applies to your connection.

What PRISM Live Studio may add to the bill
PRISM Live Studio’s June 5, 2025 announcement said that basic features, including live streaming, would remain free. A basic single-platform YouTube stream therefore does not need to include a PRISM subscription in its baseline cost. The announcement listed PRISM Plus at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the US, with features including desktop multistreaming to up to six channels, premium templates, and ad removal. Those are announced US prices, not a guaranteed current quote; check PRISM’s current plan page before subscribing. PRISM Live Studio’s June 5, 2025 announcement

Check whether the spare PC can handle the stream
PRISM’s published Windows baseline lists a Core i3-9100 or higher, 8 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or equivalent as minimum specifications. Its general-streaming recommendation is a Core i5-8500 or higher, at least 16 GB of RAM, and an RTX 2070 or equivalent. These are PRISM’s specifications, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will remain stable in a particular 24-hour scene. PRISM system requirements
If the machine struggles, reduce workload before buying parts. PRISM recommends simplifying sources and scenes, lowering output resolution, bitrate, or frame rate, and closing resource-heavy programs. If the PC has an appropriate discrete GPU, try hardware encoding; for limited processing power, PRISM’s guidance says to set the frame rate to 30 or lower. Recheck stability after each change, because scene complexity and encoder settings affect the load. PRISM streaming settings PRISM encoder settings

Choose stream quality to fit the PC and upload connection
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Treat these as encoder bitrate recommendations, not promises about the connection or final viewing quality. Test your chosen resolution and bitrate against the available upload bandwidth; leave enough capacity for a stable connection rather than assuming the advertised internet speed is always available. YouTube’s live encoder settings
| Output target | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 5 Mbps | Lower bitrate and workload than the 1080p30 target; still verify the PC and upload connection. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | Requires more upload capacity and may increase encoding workload; test before relying on it unattended. |
Resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and encoder choice all affect the demands on the PC. Start with a target the machine and connection can sustain, then test the actual PRISM scene rather than judging performance from hardware specifications alone.

Prepare the channel and decide how to handle the archive
Check YouTube live eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to livestream. Confirm eligibility before configuring an unattended broadcast. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
Do not assume a 24-hour stream will be fully archived
Continuous live availability and a complete saved replay are different outcomes. YouTube warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If an archive matters, plan a local backup and consider whether to end and restart the broadcast in segments shorter than 12 hours; a segment plan still does not replace checking that the replay was saved. YouTube Help on live-stream archives YouTube Help on managing live streams
Check rights and channel policies for what you play
Before looping or rebroadcasting recordings, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and copyright policies apply to the stream; permission to upload or use a recording elsewhere does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it on YouTube. Also consider whether repeated or reused material fits your channel’s goals and applicable YouTube policies. Do not treat continuous uptime as a substitute for rights clearance or platform compliance.

Keep the do-it-yourself setup manageable
- Check the channel first. Verify that YouTube live streaming is available to your channel and review any restrictions before planning a continuous broadcast.
- Build the intended PRISM scene. Add only the sources you need, close resource-heavy applications, and choose a resolution, frame rate, and encoder that the PC can sustain.
- Set and test the output. Use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate guidance as a starting point—5 Mbps for 720p30 or 10 Mbps for 1080p30—and test the selected quality against the upload connection.
- Measure power under real load. Run the actual scene and encoder, measure wall draw, and use the formula above with your local tariff and planned hours.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Check for dropped frames, overheating, interruptions, and whether your chosen archive plan works. Arrange a way to monitor and restart the PC or stream if your setup requires it; the available evidence does not establish an automatic restart configuration for every PC.
- Decide whether to split the broadcast. If a saved replay matters, account for YouTube’s warning about streams longer than 12 hours and consider shorter segments or a local recording backup.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| High or unexpected electricity cost | Wall draw, included equipment, hours, or tariff entered into the estimate | Measure the complete setup while streaming; check whether peripherals were counted twice and use the tariff from your bill. |
| Encoding overload or choppy output | Scene complexity, output resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or encoder choice | Simplify sources, lower output settings, close resource-heavy programs, and try hardware encoding if an appropriate discrete GPU is available. |
| Stream disconnects or becomes unstable | Upload connection or PC stability under the actual workload | Test at the selected quality, reduce bitrate or output demands, and monitor the setup before relying on it unattended. |
| No live-stream access | Channel verification or a recent live-stream restriction | Check YouTube’s channel eligibility requirements and resolve any restriction before scheduling the stream. |
| Replay is missing or incomplete | Broadcast exceeded 12 hours | YouTube says a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all; use a local backup if the recording is important and consider shorter planned segments. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the point is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a home PC on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
