How Much Does It Cost to Host a Minecraft Server in 2026?

In 2026, Minecraft server hosting ranges from free options with hibernation to roughly $2.50–$96 monthly. Learn what RAM, player count, modpacks, Realms pricing and renewal rates mean for your budget.

Hosting a Minecraft server in 2026 costs roughly $2.50 to $96 per month for commonly advertised plans, with higher-capacity networks reaching about $80 to $200 monthly. Your real price is driven mainly by RAM, the number of simultaneous players, and whether you run vanilla Minecraft or modpacks.

For a vanilla community of 10 to 20 players, comparison guides commonly report $15 to $25 per month. A similarly sized modded server is usually reported at $30 to $50 per month. Mojang’s Java Realms is a simpler fixed-price option at $7.99 per month for the owner and up to 10 additional players, but it does not let you choose a RAM tier.

What you are paying for

A Minecraft hosting bill is primarily a bill for memory and capacity. RAM holds the game world, loaded chunks, plugins, mods and player activity while the server is running. More simultaneous players and heavier modpacks require more memory and usually a stronger CPU allocation as well.

Player slots are not a perfect measure of performance. A lightly used 20-slot vanilla server can need less capacity than a heavily modded server with fewer players. Treat slot counts as a host’s marketing limit and RAM as the more useful technical starting point.

Vanilla versus modded servers

Vanilla servers use the unmodified game or relatively light server software. Reported prices for 10 to 20 players cluster around $15 to $25 per month. Modded communities of the same size are reported around $30 to $50 because modpacks consume more memory and need more headroom during world generation and busy periods.

Always-on versus occasional play

A paid host normally keeps the server available around the clock. Free services can cost nothing, but they commonly suspend or hibernate a server when nobody is playing and impose resource caps. That difference matters if friends expect to join at any time.

Use case Reported monthly price Capacity or qualification
Overall advertised range $2.50–$96 Varies by RAM and player capacity
Small vanilla community $15–$25 About 10–20 players
Small modded community $30–$50 About 10–20 players
Small vanilla plans €2.59–€6 About 2–4 GB RAM; reported as always-on with DDoS protection
Modpacks or larger communities About €11.65 and up About 9–16 GB RAM
Large-network plans $6–$15 Reported for 20–50 players running 24/7; low-confidence single-guide estimate
Very large networks $80–$200 Reported once a network exceeds about 100 concurrent players; low-confidence single-guide estimate
Per-RAM benchmark About €1.10/GB or $1/GB Separate rough benchmarks from two providers, not a universal rate

The overlapping ranges are not a contradiction: they come from different providers, currencies, resource definitions and levels of service. A €2.59 plan may be adequate for a small, lightly used world, while a busy modded community can quickly move into the €11.65-plus or $30-plus ranges.

Examples from named hosting plans

Several comparison guides list these entry prices. Check the current checkout page and renewal terms before paying because the first charge can be promotional.

Provider Reported entry price Important qualification
Apex Hosting $11.24 for the first month Reported renewal price is $14.99 per month
Shockbyte From $2.99 per month Advertised with unlimited player slots; actual performance still depends on the plan’s resources
BisectHosting From $2.99 per month Listed with Java and Bedrock support

At Apex Hosting’s reported renewal rate, twelve months would total $179.88 before taxes or add-ons, compared with $134.88 if the introductory $11.24 rate somehow applied every month. That illustrates why the renewal figure, not the banner price, belongs in your budget.

Mojang Realms pricing

Realms is the official subscription route and is intentionally simpler than a resource-tiered host. You pay a flat fee instead of selecting RAM, CPU or a player-slot package.

Edition or plan Reported price Reported player allowance
Java Realms $7.99 per month, recurring Owner plus up to 10 other players
Bedrock Realms $3.99 per month Up to 3 players
Bedrock Realms Plus $7.99 per month Plan details were reported separately from the basic Bedrock price

The Java price is enough to calculate a straightforward annual budget: $7.99 multiplied by 12 is $95.88. The Bedrock figures and regional prices should be confirmed in the live Minecraft account store because the published reports used for these amounts were not verified against a current official checkout.

Trials and regional pricing

Guides report a free trial of either one month or 30 days for new accounts. The exact offer can depend on eligibility and may change. Reported regional prices include roughly €7.49 to €8.99 in the European Union and £5.99 to £7.99 in the United Kingdom, but those figures were not confirmed on the official page, so do not treat them as guaranteed local prices.

What Realms does not provide

Realms does not offer the RAM tiers used by independent hosts. If a particular modpack, plugin stack or high-concurrency community needs more memory than the fixed service provides, you cannot solve that by moving to a larger Realms plan; you would need a different hosting model.

Free hosting and self-hosting

Free hosts

Services such as Aternos and Minehut are reported as free to use. Their trade-off is operational rather than monetary: servers can hibernate while idle and resources are capped. They can suit a test world, an occasional small group or someone deciding whether a permanent server is worthwhile. They are a poor fit when players need guaranteed always-on access or when a modpack outgrows the available limits.

Running the server at home

Self-hosting has no hosting subscription. You supply the computer, network connection and electricity, and you remain responsible for keeping the machine available. The cost therefore shifts from a predictable monthly bill to hardware ownership and ongoing power use. No universal hardware or electricity figure was published for 2026, because those costs depend on your existing computer, local energy rates and the workload.

Self-hosting can make sense when you already own suitable hardware and are comfortable maintaining it. A paid host is easier to budget and generally avoids making your home computer the server, but the subscription continues every month.

How to choose a realistic budget

  1. Count concurrent players, not total members. Estimate how many people will be online at the same time. A community with 40 members but a peak of 12 players should budget closer to the 10–20-player category than to a 40-slot network.
  2. Identify the server type. Vanilla worlds commonly fit the reported $15–$25 range for 10–20 players. Modpacks for the same group commonly move to $30–$50.
  3. Set a RAM target. Small vanilla plans in the reports provide about 2–4 GB. Modpacks or larger communities are associated with roughly 9–16 GB. Use these as starting bands, not promises that every pack will run identically.
  4. Decide whether you need 24/7 access. If players can tolerate hibernation, a free host may work. If the world must be available at any time, focus on an always-on paid plan or a self-hosted machine that remains powered.
  5. Choose the platform. Realms pricing differs between Java and Bedrock, and independent-host Java and Bedrock prices were not separately established in the available comparisons. Verify that the host supports your edition before ordering.
  6. Compare renewal totals. Record the regular monthly rate, not only the first-month promotion. Multiply that renewal rate by 12 to see the first full-year cost.
  7. Check the player policy. “Unlimited slots” does not mean unlimited performance. Confirm what resources are included and whether the advertised slot count matches your intended workload.

Worked budget examples

Private vanilla group

For a few friends playing an uncomplicated vanilla world, a 2–4 GB plan in the reported €2.59–€6 range may be sufficient. A free host can reduce the bill to zero if hibernation and resource limits are acceptable. Realms may be easier if everyone uses the supported edition and the fixed player allowance fits the group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ten to twenty vanilla players

Use $15–$25 per month as the practical comparison-guide range for an always-on community. That equals $180–$300 over 12 months before taxes or extras. A $2.99 headline plan may look cheaper, but you must verify its RAM, renewal price and actual player capacity before comparing it with this range.

Ten to twenty modded players

Budget $30–$50 per month, or $360–$600 per year. The higher range reflects the memory demands of modpacks rather than simply the number of player slots. Plans reported at roughly 9–16 GB and €11.65 or more are another reference point, especially where European pricing applies.

Large network

For 20–50 players online continuously, one guide reports $6–$15 monthly, but that estimate is low confidence and conflicts with other reported bands. Once concurrency passes about 100 players, the same guide places costs around $80–$200 per month. Treat both figures as rough planning signals and obtain a current quote based on your network design.

Common pricing mistakes

  • Budgeting from the welcome price: introductory offers can rise substantially at renewal.
  • Assuming slots equal capacity: slot counts do not tell you how much RAM your world or modpack receives.
  • Mixing currencies without conversion: €2.59–€6 and $15–$25 are different source ranges, not interchangeable tiers.
  • Assuming Java and Bedrock cost the same: Realms has separate reported prices, and dedicated-host prices were not separately verified.
  • Expecting free hosting to be always-on: hibernation and capped resources are the normal trade-off reported for free services.
  • Ignoring edition compatibility: confirm Java or Bedrock support before paying, particularly when a listing advertises both.

Which option fits which player?

Your priority Most suitable starting point Reason
Zero subscription cost Free host No monthly fee, with hibernation and resource caps
Simple official service for a small group Realms Flat recurring price and no RAM selection
Plugins, modpacks or adjustable capacity Managed host Plans are differentiated by RAM and player capacity
Use of existing hardware Self-hosting No hosting subscription, but you pay in hardware, electricity and maintenance

For most buyers, the sensible 2026 expectation is not one universal price but a tier: about $15–$25 monthly for a small vanilla community, $30–$50 for a similarly sized modded one, and $7.99 monthly for Java Realms when its fixed allowance meets the need. Verify the live price, renewal rate, edition support and memory allocation before committing.
