DayZ loot respawn is managed by the Central Economy (CE). For individual items, the main controls are in types.xml: nominal sets the target quantity, restock controls how quickly stock is replenished, and lifetime controls when untouched items are cleaned up. Group events such as crash sites use events.xml instead. Set restock to 0 for the fastest replenishment, but do not assume that raising lifetime makes loot return faster. Stored items, players near a spawn area, XML errors and unresolved behavior around min can all produce very different results from the values you enter.

DayZ’s Central Economy is the system that decides when loot appears, how much of an item should exist, and when abandoned objects are removed. It also accounts for items that are no longer sitting on the ground. A rifle in a base, gear inside a container, or another stockpiled item may still count toward the economy’s cap when the relevant counting flags are enabled.
That distinction explains a common mistake: seeing an empty town does not always mean the server has failed to spawn loot. The economy may consider the global quota full because the same item is stored elsewhere, or it may be waiting for its restock conditions to be met.

Which file controls which kind of loot
types.xmlis the principal per-item control file. Its entries describe ordinary item classes and their economy values.events.xmlcontrols groups of objects that appear as an event, such as a crash site with associated loot. Event entries have their own nominal, minimum, lifetime and restock values.cfgeventspawns.xmlsupplies positions used by event spawning.
Other configuration files are sometimes mentioned in DayZ server discussions, but their roles were not established consistently in the available documentation. Do not change an unfamiliar file simply because its name appears in a tutorial; first confirm what that file controls on the server build you run.
How an individual item respawns
For a normal item, the CE compares the number it counts against the target defined in the item’s types.xml entry. When the economy decides that more stock is needed, it queues new copies and places them according to its spawn rules. A positive restock value spaces that process over time; a value of zero removes the intentional delay and is therefore the fastest setting described by the available guides.
- The server loads the item’s economy entry.
- The CE counts eligible copies, including copies that may be stored in bases, containers or player cargo when the corresponding flags are active.
- If the economy considers the count below its target, it schedules additional copies.
- The restock setting determines whether those copies are delayed or can be supplied immediately.
- Untouched objects are eventually removed when their lifetime expires, allowing the economy to clean the map and manage the counted stock.
This is a target-and-cleanup system rather than a simple “one pickup equals one instant replacement” rule. A player can take an item and see no replacement because the count is still satisfied elsewhere, because the item is waiting for its timer, or because the spawn area is being held by players.
Understanding the main types.xml values

The disagreement over min is important. Do not publish a server rule such as “min is always the guaranteed floor” or “min is only a trigger” as if it were confirmed game documentation. If your tuning depends on a particular interpretation, test that interpretation on a private server and record the before-and-after counts.

nominal: the density target
Nominal is the clearest density control. Increasing it allows the CE to maintain more copies of that item class. It does not guarantee that every town will contain one, because placement, cleanup, player proximity and other economy rules still affect where objects appear. A high nominal value can also make the item common enough to change the survival balance you intended.
restock: what “0” means
When readers ask for “DayZ restock 0 meaning,” the operational answer supported by the sources is that 0 imposes no restock delay and is the fastest available setting. It does not mean that the server ignores nominal, counting flags or spawn locations. If the global target is already satisfied, setting restock to zero will not create extra copies. It also will not necessarily produce a replacement while players remain around the relevant spawn area.
lifetime: cleanup, not acceleration
Lifetime is a cleanup timer for an untouched object. Community examples use 3600 to represent one hour; very large values are described as keeping an object until the next server restart. Other guide examples use values such as 10800 or 14400 seconds, but those figures are illustrations rather than confirmed universal defaults.
Shortening lifetime can remove abandoned objects sooner and help the economy recycle map clutter. It should not be presented as a way to make a newly picked-up item respawn faster. That is the role associated with restock and the economy’s target calculation.

Why loot can appear not to respawn
The global cap is already satisfied
The item you want may exist in a storage box, a base, a hoarder or player cargo. If the applicable counting flags include those locations, the CE can regard the map-wide quota as full even when the floor in front of you is empty. Emptying one town therefore may not trigger a replacement if equivalent copies are stockpiled elsewhere.
Players are holding the spawn area
One hosting description says players generally need to be well clear of the location for the full restock period. Remaining near a loot spot can prevent the replacement from completing while the timer is running. For a clean test, leave the area, wait through the configured restock interval, then return and count the items.

The file contains malformed XML
A single malformed tag can stop loot from spawning, and a broken mission file can prevent the server from starting. XML editors that validate matching tags are safer than making untracked text changes. Always keep an unmodified backup so you can restore the last known-good configuration.
The server has not applied the edit
Guides disagree on whether a change takes effect at the next economy refresh or only after a full restart. The practical procedure supported across the sources is to restart after editing rather than assuming a live reload occurred. If the result is unchanged, check the active mission file, confirm the value was saved in the correct entry, and test again after a complete restart.

A safe tuning procedure
- Choose a controlled goal. Decide whether you want more overall copies, faster replacement after pickup, longer persistence of untouched gear, or a deliberately scarce economy. Do not change all four objectives at once.
- Back up the mission files. Copy the original
types.xml,events.xmland any related configuration you plan to edit. Label the backup with the date and server version. - Start with a small item set. Select a few representative classes rather than changing every entry. This makes it possible to identify whether a result came from nominal, restock, lifetime or counting behavior.
- Adjust nominal for density. Raise the target when you need more copies in circulation, or lower it when the item is too common. Keep the original value in your change log.
- Set restock deliberately. Use
0when immediate replenishment is the goal. Use a positive delay when you want scarcity to persist after players take an item. Remember that the exact positive-value mechanism is described differently by different guides. - Leave min unchanged for the first test. Because its meaning is disputed, changing it at the same time as nominal and restock makes the result difficult to interpret.
- Review counting flags. Decide whether stored copies should count toward the cap. Changing these flags can make a server appear dramatically richer or poorer without changing the number of objects in a town.
- Set lifetime for cleanup behavior. Use a shorter value to clear untouched objects sooner, or a longer value when persistence is part of the design. Do not use lifetime as a substitute for restock.
- Validate the XML. Check that every edited tag remains properly opened and closed and that no unrelated entry was removed.
- Restart the server. A restart is the safest common denominator given the disagreement about live economy refreshes.
- Measure the result. Record the item count in the same locations, leave the area for the full test interval, and check whether stored copies are affecting the total. Change one variable group at a time.
Designing aggressive and conservative economies

Use the least aggressive setting that meets your goal. A server that combines high nominal values, zero restock and counting rules that exclude storage can flood the map; a server with low nominal values, long delays and storage counted toward the cap can feel empty even when every file is valid.
Grouped event loot: events.xml
Crash sites and similar encounters are not ordinary single-item respawns. They are groups of objects created by an event definition. The event has its own nominal, minimum, lifetime and restock values, while spawn positions come from cfgeventspawns.xml.
Tune event loot separately from ordinary town loot. Increasing an item’s target in types.xml does not by itself guarantee more crash sites, and changing an event’s restock does not rewrite the target for every item in the world. When diagnosing an event, inspect both the event definition and its available positions.
Self-hosted and rented servers

In either arrangement, the technical workflow is the same: back up, edit, validate, restart and measure. A hosting control panel does not remove the need to understand which mission files are active.
Diagnosing a failed change
No loot appears anywhere after the edit
- Restore the last known-good backup if the server fails to start or broad loot spawning stops.
- Check for a malformed or unmatched XML tag.
- Confirm that the edited file belongs to the active mission.
- Restart fully, because a live economy refresh may not have loaded the change.
One item does not return
- Count copies in bases, containers and cargo when the relevant flags include them.
- Leave the spawn area for the complete restock interval.
- Check whether nominal has already been satisfied elsewhere.
- Test with restock set to
0only after recording the original value.
Items return too quickly or become too common
- Lower nominal rather than relying on lifetime to reduce density.
- Use a positive restock delay to slow replacement.
- Review whether stored copies are excluded from the count.
- Apply one change, restart and measure before making another.
The result changes after a restart but not before it
That outcome is consistent with the practical guidance to restart after edits. Keep the restart in your standard deployment procedure instead of assuming the server will reload economy values while running.
What remains uncertain
Community and hosting explanations do not agree on the exact semantics of min. They also describe positive restock values in two ways: a delay before each additional item appears, or a delay after pickup. The available material does not settle which description is authoritative for every version or configuration.
The meaning of quantmin and quantmax is likewise described inconsistently: one explanation treats them as percentages of stack fullness, while another treats them as the amount inside a containing item such as ammunition in a magazine. Test those fields independently rather than applying a percentage assumption to every item.
The material available here also does not establish the behavior of cfgspawnabletypes.xml or cfgeconomycore.xml. Avoid changing them as a workaround for a problem that can be explained by nominal, restock, lifetime, counting flags, player proximity or XML validity.
