How Much Does It Cost to Build and Maintain a Website?

Website costs depend on the build route and what is bundled. Separate upfront labor from renewals, hosting, domain, feature, and maintenance costs.

A website can cost very little upfront if you build it yourself with a hosted website builder, several thousand dollars for a straightforward professionally built site, or $10,000 or more for a complex custom project. Those are route-specific examples, not universal market rates. The ongoing bill depends on what the platform bundles and what you pay separately for hosting, a domain, features, content, and maintenance.

To make a useful estimate, define the pages and functions you need, separate one-time build work from recurring expenses, and compare options over the same time period.

What do website build and maintenance estimates look like?

Published estimates vary because guides use different definitions of a “simple” site and include different services. Treat each figure below as the publisher’s example, not as a market-wide average or a guaranteed checkout price.

Route or estimate Published figure What it covers
DIY hosted builder As little as $17 per month Wix’s 2026 guide describes this as a self-built site example. Its published estimates also put domain costs at $1 to thousands per year depending on the name, ecommerce functionality at $20 or more per month plus payment processing, and apps or integrations at $0–$100 or more per month. These are guide estimates, not guaranteed current checkout prices. Wix, 2026.
DIY builder upfront cost $0–$500 upfront Hostinger’s guide, published March 10, 2026, gives this range for a DIY builder site. The same guide estimates recurring hosting, domain renewals, and maintenance at $100–$1,000 or more per year depending on complexity and traffic. Hostinger, 2026.
Simple professionally designed site $1,000–$5,000 upfront Hostinger’s 2026 guide’s example range. Hostinger.
Complex custom-built project $10,000 or more upfront Hostinger’s 2026 guide’s example range; it is not a ceiling. Hostinger.
Freelancer or solo studio $1,000–$8,000 upfront Vivid Resources’ May 22, 2026 guide range. Vivid Resources.
Agency or studio $8,000–$60,000 or more upfront; $200–$2,000 monthly retainer Vivid Resources’ published project and retainer ranges. They describe its agency lane, not every agency’s pricing. Vivid Resources.
Selected website builders $21 per month for a business website; $26 per month for an online store, plus up to $10 per year for a domain TechRadar’s guide averages three selected builders. This is a narrow comparison across those providers, not an average for all websites. TechRadar, accessed 2026.

These estimates should not be blended into one “typical” price: the sources differ in project scope, included services, and what they classify as simple. A build quote and an annual operating budget answer different questions.

Which build route fits your budget and responsibilities?

Hosted DIY builder

A hosted builder charges a recurring subscription and generally bundles hosting and technical operation. This can reduce initial cash spending and setup work, but it usually provides less flexibility than a self-hosted CMS or custom development. Wix describes a paid plan renewal as the core ongoing expense for a Wix-built site; Hostinger and TechRadar also describe builder plans as bundling hosting and tools. Wix, Hostinger, TechRadar.

Self-hosted CMS, such as WordPress

The software may be free, but you arrange hosting and a domain and may add paid themes, plugins, or maintenance help. Hostinger’s WordPress DIY example estimates $100–$300 upfront for a domain and standard hosting, then $2–$50 per month ongoing. That is one provider’s example, not a required budget. Hostinger.

Freelancer or agency

Professional fees may cover design and implementation, and can also include content or specialized functionality. Hosting, maintenance, and ongoing support may be separate. Before agreeing, get a written scope that spells out pages, revisions, integrations, who supplies content, ownership, launch support, and post-launch work.

Custom-coded site or web application

Custom work can make sense when templates and standard integrations do not meet the requirements. Complexity and ecommerce functionality can increase the build cost, and the project still needs an explicit hosting and maintenance plan. Hostinger, TechRadar.

What should you include in the total cost?

A low initial quote can leave significant work or recurring services outside the price. Review each of these cost areas for your specific project:

  • Build labor: design, development, content entry, copywriting, photography, migration, and project management.
  • Platform and hosting: confirm what a subscription includes, what is billed separately, and how introductory pricing compares with renewal pricing.
  • Domain: budget for annual registration and renewal. Premium domain names may cost much more than ordinary registrations. Wix, TechRadar.
  • Design assets: optional templates, themes, photography, and branding.
  • Features: ecommerce, payment processing, booking, memberships, integrations, and third-party apps or plugins. Ecommerce may add a platform fee as well as payment processing; verify both for the plan you choose. Wix, Hostinger, TechRadar.
  • Operations: updates, security checks, backups, support, and content changes. Check which tasks are covered and what response times are promised.
  • Growth: SEO tools and marketing are related operating expenses, but they may not be part of a build quote.
  • Your time: doing it yourself can lower cash spending while requiring meaningful setup and continuing work.

How can you compare website quotes fairly?

Compare equivalent feature scopes over the same period. Include the initial build and at least the first renewal cycle so that a lower upfront price does not obscure later charges. Ask vendors for specific answers to these questions; the contract or provider must establish the details.

  1. What pages, features, design work, content, and integrations are included?
  2. What is the renewal price, and which services renew separately?
  3. Who owns the domain, content, and code? Can the site be exported or moved?
  4. Are updates, backups, security work, and small content changes included? What counts as a change request?
  5. Is ecommerce included, and are payment-processing fees extra?
  6. What support is available after launch, and what response times apply?

These questions matter because bundles and responsibilities differ by route; the exact answers depend on the vendor and contract. Wix, Hostinger, TechRadar.

Which option is a sensible starting point?

If you mainly need contact details, a few pages, and basic publishing, a hosted builder is a plausible low-cash route. If you need custom workflows, unusual integrations, high-volume ecommerce, or an internal application, compare professional project scope and post-launch support rather than choosing solely by the first quote. These are practical distinctions between the routes, not a rule that every business should choose one option.
