How to Fact-Check a ChatGPT Answer With Reliable Sources

A ChatGPT citation is not proof. Check each claim against its source, confirm the publisher and date, and mark anything unsupported as unverified.

To fact-check a ChatGPT answer, break it into claims, open each citation, and check whether the source directly supports the specific statement and is current enough for the topic. A citation marker is a lead to evidence—not proof that the claim is true.

Why ChatGPT answers need checking

ChatGPT can give incorrect or misleading information, sometimes in a confident tone. OpenAI says errors can include false facts and definitions, fabricated quotations, studies, or citations, and overconfident answers to ambiguous or complex questions. Treat an answer as a first draft when accuracy matters, not as a substitute for verification. OpenAI’s guidance on whether ChatGPT tells the truth recommends checking important information.

How to fact-check a ChatGPT answer

  1. Separate the answer into checkable claims. Rewrite each factual point as a statement you can verify independently. Prioritize consequential, surprising, numerical, technical, and time-sensitive claims. A long sentence may contain several claims that need separate evidence.
  2. Open every citation attached to a claim. Do not rely on the citation marker, a search-result snippet, or a page title. Read the linked source and locate the relevant passage, figure, or document. Ask whether it supports the exact claim—not merely whether it discusses the same general subject. A citation can be present and still fail to prove the statement.
  3. Check who published the source and when. Identify the publisher and the publication or update date. For facts that can change, such as rules or technical specifications, an older source may no longer support a claim about the present. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance advises checking source dates and using authoritative sources when accuracy matters.
  4. Look for the original evidence. When a claim depends on a quotation, statistic, rule, announcement, or technical detail, find the original document or the organization responsible for it where possible. OpenAI recommends using authoritative sources, but its guidance does not set a universal authority ranking for every subject. Judge the source in context rather than assuming that one type of publisher is always sufficient.
  5. Verify high-risk details directly. For a quotation, find the exact words in the cited source and check the surrounding context. For a number, confirm the figure and what it measures in the original material. For a technical claim or reference to an external document, inspect that source itself; a related page is not confirmation.
  6. Mark unsupported or uncertain claims honestly. If a source does not substantiate a statement, is too old for the question, or cannot be accessed, do not treat the claim as verified. You can ask ChatGPT to search again using a specific source, date, or location, then open and assess the new result as well. Searching again does not guarantee correctness.

What reliable sourcing looks like in practice

Suppose an answer gives a current technical specification and cites a page about the product. Check that the cited page states that exact specification, identify its publisher, and see when it was published or updated. If the page only describes the product generally, it does not establish the specific number. Seek the responsible organization’s original specification if available; if you cannot confirm the figure, label it unverified rather than repeating it as fact.

For a quotation, compare the exact wording with the cited document and check that the context has not changed its meaning. For a changing rule, confirm the relevant jurisdiction and date in the source. These checks help distinguish a plausible answer from one whose evidence actually matches the claim.

What ChatGPT Search citations do—and do not—show

When ChatGPT Search supplies citations, use them as starting points: open the source, match it to the attached claim, and check its date. OpenAI cautions that “Search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” A citation therefore does not certify that an answer is accurate; the source still needs to support the exact statement and be suitable for the question. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance also says you can request a search using a specific source, date, or location if a result seems wrong.
