How Much Does It Cost to Attend a Gaming Convention in Canada in 2026?

For the 2026 Canadian events examined, admission alone runs from about CAD $30 to $200 at a gaming-focused convention. Toronto Game Expo lists $30 single-day general admission, $50 weekend general admission, $55 single-day VIP, $90 weekend VIP and $200 Super VIP; its four-pack weekend pass is $180. FAN EXPO Canada’s 2026 listing shows a broader $12–$179 ticket range. Those are entry prices, not the cost of a complete trip.

To budget realistically, add five categories: admission, transportation to the city, lodging, food and discretionary spending such as merchandise, games, autographs or photo ops. A local one-day visit can remain relatively inexpensive; an out-of-town weekend is driven mainly by hotel nights and intercity travel.

The short answer: use an all-in budget, not just the ticket price

The most useful calculation is:

Total cost = admission + transport to the city + lodging + meals + local transit or parking + optional purchases.

Admission is often the easiest number to find, but it is not necessarily the largest part of the bill. Someone who lives near a convention centre might pay one ticket, local transit and meals. Someone travelling from another province may pay for return rail, bus or air travel, two or more hotel nights, local transportation and the same meals and ticket.

For 2026 examples, Toronto Game Expo provides clear ticket anchors, while broader conventions publish wider ranges and separate guest charges. Hotel and intercity transportation prices are not a single national amount: they depend on the city, dates, origin, occupancy and how early you book.

2026 admission prices at Canadian gaming and gaming-adjacent conventions

The following figures are Canadian-dollar examples for the stated 2026 events. Ticket prices, inventory and tiers can change, so check the organizer’s live ticket page before paying.

Event City and 2026 dates What it offers Published admission information
Toronto Game Expo Toronto, Nov. 7–8, 2026 Free-play arcade and console games, tabletop RPGs, tournaments and indie developers; 600+ exhibitors, artists and vendors and 10,000+ fans advertised $30 single-day GA; $50 weekend GA; $55 single-day VIP; $90 weekend VIP; $200 Super VIP; $180 four-pack weekend pass
FAN EXPO Canada Toronto, Aug. 27–30, 2026 Broad comics, anime, sci-fi, horror and gaming programming 2026 listing reports $12–$179, depending on pass and pricing stage
Otakuthon Montreal, Aug. 7–9, 2026 Anime and Japanese pop culture with gaming-related activity Specific ticket amounts are not stated in the supplied event-planning information
Montreal Comiccon Montreal, July 3–5, 2026 Broad pop-culture convention that includes gaming Specific admission amounts are not stated in the supplied FAQ information

Toronto Game Expo also says prices increase on Nov. 6, 2026. That creates a concrete reason to decide before the stated deadline rather than assuming the first listed price will remain available.

What the Toronto Game Expo tiers mean for a budget

A $30 single-day GA ticket is the lowest published Toronto Game Expo entry point. A $50 weekend GA ticket costs $20 more but covers both convention days. The $55 single-day VIP, $90 weekend VIP and $200 Super VIP tiers are premium choices, not necessary admission for attending the show.

The $180 four-pack weekend pass is marketed for groups. Four individual $50 weekend GA tickets would total $200, so the four-pack represents a stated $20 saving before any travel, food or optional purchases. Children under four are free, and ages four to 10 have a $10 weekend pass at Toronto Game Expo.

Three realistic attendance scenarios

Local one-day attendee

Start with one single-day ticket, then add local transportation or parking, meals and a firm discretionary cap. Using the published Toronto Game Expo GA floor and the Montreal Comiccon parking reference as examples, $30 admission plus $18–$22 parking equals $48–$52 before food or purchases. The parking figure is specific to Montreal Comiccon and should not be treated as a Toronto rate.

  • One-day admission
  • Transit fare, rideshare or parking
  • Food and drinks during the day
  • A pre-set limit for merchandise, games, autographs or photo opportunities

Local full-weekend attendee

A weekend pass may be better value when you genuinely plan to attend both days. Toronto Game Expo’s $50 GA weekend pass is lower than buying two $30 single-day GA tickets ($60), while the $90 weekend VIP and $200 Super VIP options serve different access and experience preferences. Add two days of meals and local travel; if you drive, verify whether the venue charges daily parking and whether re-entry affects how many parking days you need.

Out-of-town weekend attendee

For a traveller, admission is only one line in the total. Add round-trip rail, bus or airfare, usually at least two hotel nights, transportation between the station or airport and the venue, local transit or parking, meals and optional spending. Otakuthon lists official partner hotels, and Montreal Comiccon says the Palais des congrès area has about 15,000 nearby hotel rooms, including 4,500 connected to the venue. Neither source provides a stable nationwide room rate, so price a room for your exact dates and occupancy.

Family or friend group

Group pricing can reduce admission, but it does not automatically reduce the largest travel costs. At Toronto Game Expo, the $180 four-pack weekend pass is $20 below four $50 weekend GA tickets. Children’s pricing can lower the ticket line further: children under four are free and ages four to 10 pay $10 for a weekend pass. You still need enough hotel beds, meals and transportation for every person.

How to build your own Canadian convention budget

  1. Choose the exact event and dates. A gaming-first show in Toronto has a different schedule and travel burden from a Montreal pop-culture convention with gaming programming. Record the city, venue and number of days you will attend.
  2. Select the admission type. Compare single-day, weekend, VIP, group and child tickets. Write down whether the listed price is an early price, a later price or a limited tier. Toronto Game Expo’s published increase date is Nov. 6, 2026.
  3. Quote transportation from your actual origin. Check return rail, bus or air fares, then include station or airport transfers. For local attendees, compare transit, rideshare and parking rather than assuming driving is cheapest.
  4. Price lodging by room, nights and occupants. Enter the number of nights, people sharing, taxes and any resort, destination or parking fees shown at checkout. Partner-hotel lists can identify convenient properties, but they do not guarantee a particular rate.
  5. Set a food allowance. Decide whether breakfast comes from the hotel, whether you will carry snacks and how many meals will be purchased inside or near the venue. Keep the allowance separate from merchandise money.
  6. Create an optional-spending cap. Use separate limits for vendor purchases, games, collectibles, autographs, photo ops and unexpected fees. FAN EXPO Canada warns that some guests charge separately for autographs and photo opportunities.
  7. Add a contingency amount. Leave room for a fare change, an extra local trip, a sold-out nearby hotel or a purchase you cannot easily make later. Do not use the contingency as permission to exceed the total you can afford.
  8. Recheck every volatile line before checkout. Ticket inventory, guest fees, schedules, hotel rates and transportation fares can change. Save the final confirmation and note cancellation rules.

Parking, transit and venue access

Parking is a visible extra that can materially change a local or weekend budget. Montreal Comiccon’s official FAQ lists daily parking at $18–$22 at or near the Palais des congrès. Two parking days therefore add $36–$44 before fuel, but that arithmetic applies only when you actually use the stated daily parking option.

The same Montreal FAQ describes metro, bus and train access. Public transit may avoid parking and downtown traffic, while a hotel within walking distance may eliminate several local trips. Compare the total journey, not only the headline fare: a cheaper remote hotel can require daily transit, rideshare or parking.

Otakuthon’s visitor-planning information specifically recommends transportation planning for its Palais des congrès setting. Large events can make the final connection from a station or hotel slower than a map estimate, especially at opening and closing times.

Optional costs many first-time attendees miss

Guest autographs and photo ops

Admission does not necessarily include a guest’s autograph or photo opportunity. FAN EXPO Canada states that some guests may charge additional fees. Treat each activity as a separate purchase and check the guest’s current policy, payment method and queue rules.

Merchandise and games

Exhibitors, artists, indie developers and tabletop areas create many opportunities to spend beyond the ticket. Decide whether your cap covers one major item, several small purchases or no shopping at all. Carrying a fixed amount or using a separate spending account makes the limit easier to enforce.

Food and drinks

Venue food can be convenient but may cost more than meals outside the convention centre. A realistic plan includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks for every day, plus any meal on the travel day.

Connectivity and battery needs

Show-floor days are long. A portable USB power bank is a practical, non-required accessory if your phone handles tickets, schedules, maps and payments. Bring charging cables that match your devices and check venue rules before packing larger batteries.

Noise and crowd comfort

Otakuthon recommends earplugs or noise-reducing headphones for crowd conditions. Include noise-reducing earplugs in a packing checklist if crowded, loud spaces affect you; they are a small optional cost that can prevent an otherwise expensive day from becoming unusable.

When a weekend pass is cheaper than day tickets

Do the arithmetic for the specific event. At Toronto Game Expo, two $30 single-day GA tickets total $60, compared with the $50 weekend GA pass, a $10 difference. The weekend VIP comparison is not directly available from the listed single-day VIP price because two $55 single-day VIP tickets total $110, while the weekend VIP pass is $90, a $20 difference. These savings matter only if you will attend both days; a weekend pass is not cheaper if you use only one day unless the unused access has value to you.

For groups, compare the exact number of attendees with the available bundle. Four $50 weekend GA tickets total $200, while the Toronto Game Expo four-pack is $180. Check age eligibility and whether every member can enter under the bundle’s terms.

Comparing the four 2026 event choices

Price is only one decision axis. Consider how strongly the event matches your interests, how many days you need, the city’s travel burden, premium-tier pricing, venue access and whether activities you care about cost extra.

If you value… Potential fit Budget implication
Gaming-first programming Toronto Game Expo Clear GA, VIP, Super VIP and group prices; Toronto travel and lodging are separate
A broad multi-genre show FAN EXPO Canada Published 2026 range is $12–$179; guest autographs and photo ops may add fees
Anime and Japanese pop culture with gaming activity Otakuthon Montreal lodging and transportation planning matter; partner hotels are listed, but no national room rate is stated
Pop culture, including gaming, at the Palais des congrès Montreal Comiccon Daily parking is listed at $18–$22; metro, bus and train access can change the local-transport line

Otakuthon says its Palais des congrès setting can exceed 35,000 participants. That scale can affect hotel availability, travel timing and how much value you get from a one-day versus multi-day ticket.

A printable CAD worksheet

Budget line Your amount What to verify
Admission $_____ Pass type, date, age category, tier and price-change deadline
Transport to the city $_____ Return fare, baggage, transfers and cancellation terms
Lodging $_____ Nightly rate, number of nights, occupants, taxes and parking
Meals and drinks $_____ Every convention and travel day
Local transit or parking $_____ Daily rate, venue access and late-night return
Autographs and photo ops $_____ Guest-specific fees and payment rules
Merchandise and games $_____ Your personal spending cap
Contingency $_____ Fare, schedule or availability changes
Total $_____ Compare with the amount you can actually spend

Ways to keep the trip affordable without sacrificing the event

  • Buy before a published price increase when your dates and attendance are certain; Toronto Game Expo’s stated increase date is Nov. 6, 2026.
  • Choose a weekend GA pass instead of two single-day tickets when you will attend both days and the arithmetic favours the pass.
  • Use a group pass where the bundle genuinely covers your group; verify child rules before checkout.
  • Compare hotel distance, room cost and local transportation together. A cheaper room is not cheaper if it adds two rides or parking charges every day.
  • Set autograph, photo-op and merchandise limits before entering the show floor.
  • Use transit when it is practical and compare its full door-to-door cost with parking, fuel and downtown traffic.
  • Pack permitted snacks, a refillable water container and a phone power bank to reduce convenience purchases, subject to venue rules.

What your final number should look like

A local Toronto Game Expo visitor can begin with $30 for one-day GA or $50 for a weekend GA pass, then add local travel, food and a spending cap. A Montreal Comiccon visitor who drives should account for the stated $18–$22 daily parking range. A traveller attending any of these conventions must obtain live quotes for return transportation and lodging; those costs cannot be responsibly replaced with one national estimate.

The right answer for your trip is therefore a completed worksheet, not a headline ticket price. Decide whether you are local or travelling, choose the pass that matches the days you will use, price the hotel and transport for your dates, and reserve a separate amount for optional experiences.
