A gaming PC can cost from about $700 to over $4,500 in the U.S. Learn how 2026 price estimates map to 1080p, 1440p, and 4K gaming—and what to include in your budget.

In the U.S., a gaming desktop can cost about $700 to more than $4,500, depending on the performance you want. For a practical starting point, current 2026 guides place capable 1080p systems around $700–$1,000, mid-range 1080p–1440p systems around $1,200–$2,200, and high-end systems around $1,800–$2,500 or more. These are publisher estimates, not a measured market average or a live quote.

Gaming PC prices by performance tier

The useful way to budget is to start with the resolution and games you care about, then compare complete specifications. A tier label or GPU name alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate in a particular game.

Target use Published U.S. estimate What the estimate represents
Entry-level 1080p $700–$1,000 (HP, 2026); Newegg says a capable 1080p desktop starts around $750 in its 2026 guide Broad editorial guidance, not a guarantee of equivalent stock or performance.
Mid-range 1080p–1440p $1,200–$2,200 (HP, 2026) HP associates this tier with RTX 5070- or RTX 5070 Ti-class graphics cards; that pairing does not guarantee performance in a specific game.
High-end 1440p or 4K $1,800–$2,500 or more (HP, 2026) HP’s broad high-end estimate; actual price and results depend on the full configuration.
Overall gaming PC range $1,000 to over $4,500 (HP, 2026) HP’s typical range in its U.S. buyer guide, not an independently measured average.

The ranges are not one unified market survey: they come from different publisher guides and describe broad tiers. Newegg’s estimate is also a retailer-publisher estimate, not a promise that a matching desktop will be available at that price. The cited guides do not establish a current industry-wide average.

What changes the price?

Two desktops advertised with the same graphics-card model can still differ substantially in overall capability and cost. Compare the full specification and purchase terms rather than relying on the headline GPU or discount.

  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Target resolution and games: A system intended for 1080p has a different budget target from one intended for 1440p or 4K. Demands vary by game, settings, and desired smoothness.
  • CPU, GPU, memory, and storage: Check the exact models and capacities. Broad tier descriptions do not specify the performance of every configuration.
  • Prebuilt or configurable system: Confirm exactly which components are included in the listed configuration.
  • Warranty, service, and upgrades: Compare coverage and whether the system can be upgraded as you expect.
  • Total checkout price: Account for tax, shipping, and any costs that are not included in the advertised price.

Does the price include a monitor and accessories?

Do not assume a gaming PC estimate covers a complete setup. The cited guides do not consistently state whether their figures include a display or peripherals. Check the listing for a monitor, keyboard, and mouse; if they are not included, budget for them separately. The same applies to tax and shipping unless the price explicitly includes them.

Is building a gaming PC cheaper than buying one?

The available vendor catalogs show prebuilt and configurable gaming systems, but they do not establish a reliable savings amount for building an equivalent PC yourself. A fair comparison requires a dated parts list matched to a prebuilt configuration, with assembly, operating system, warranty, tax, and shipping treated consistently. Do not assume a fixed percentage saving.

How to set a realistic budget

  1. Choose the target: Decide whether you want 1080p, 1440p, or 4K gaming, and identify the games and settings that matter to you.
  2. Use a tier as a starting range: Treat the published estimates above as planning guidance, not as a promise of performance or availability.
  3. Compare complete configurations: Check the CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, warranty, upgrade options, and included accessories.
  4. Calculate the full cost: Add any monitor or peripherals you need, plus tax and shipping if they are excluded.
  5. Verify the current offer: Prices and discounts can change. Check the exact configuration and final checkout amount with the seller; a guide range is not a live quote.

For current product listings, consult the HP 2026 cost guide, Newegg’s 2026 budget guide, and the HP gaming computer explainer. Manufacturer catalogs and checkout offers can change, so confirm the current price and exact configuration before buying.
