Those figures are not equivalent: the PAL-V is a roadable gyroplane with published performance figures, while Alef’s number is tied to a preorder queue for a future product. In every case, the advertised price is only the starting point. Registration, insurance, pilot training, fuel, maintenance, storage and permission to operate can add substantial cost, and your country’s aviation and road rules determine whether you can actually use the vehicle.
Current flying-car prices at a glance
Only a few companies publish public prices, and the numbers describe different stages of development. PAL-V publishes expected European prices for a vehicle with a defined road-and-flight configuration. Alef publishes an expected price and accepts paid reservations, but a reservation is not a delivered vehicle or a final invoice.

Currency conversion can make the headline figures look similar, but exchange rates, local taxes and equipment choices can change the amount you pay. Treat every number above as the seller’s stated figure for the stated market and date, not as a guaranteed drive-away price.

What you are buying for the PAL-V Liberty price
PAL-V describes the Liberty as a two-seat vehicle that operates on roads and as a gyroplane in the air. Its published specification includes fuel-powered propulsion, a road speed of up to 160 km/h, a flight speed of up to 180 km/h and a flight range of approximately 400–500 km. The vehicle can transform from driving configuration to flight configuration in about five minutes.

That architecture matters to the budget. You are not buying a normal car with an optional flying mode. You are buying a road vehicle integrated with an aircraft, with systems, inspections, operating limits and training obligations associated with both uses. The advertised €299,000 price therefore represents the platform itself, not an all-inclusive ownership package.
What “excluding taxes and works” means for your quote
PAL-V’s product page uses the wording “€299,000.- Expected EU price, excl. taxes and works.” It does not provide a jurisdiction-neutral total for those excluded items. Before signing anything, ask the seller to define “works” in writing and to itemize factory preparation, delivery, registration support, options and any required modifications. Then obtain a separate estimate for your country’s VAT or sales tax, import duties and registration charges.
What the Pioneer Edition changes
The Liberty Pioneer Edition is listed at €499,000, also excluding taxes and works. PAL-V limits that edition to 90 vehicles. The higher price and limited run do not, by themselves, establish different operating permissions, lower running costs or a different delivery date. Request a specification sheet that identifies every equipment, finish, service and support difference before treating the premium as justified.

How Alef’s $299,999 figure differs
Alef’s official preorder page states “$299,999 expected price.” The same page offers a $150 General Queue reservation and a $1,500 Priority Queue reservation. Those payments buy a place in a queue; they are not the aircraft, a road-legal vehicle, a tax payment or a promise that a vehicle is ready for delivery.

An expected price can change before production. Ask for the contract’s treatment of reservation refunds, the event that converts a reservation into a binding order, the deposit schedule, delivery charges, taxes, options, insurance requirements and the approvals needed to operate in your jurisdiction. The preorder page is less detailed than PAL-V’s page about final production specifications, so do not assume that Alef’s vehicle has the same seats, range, speed or transformation method as the Liberty.
Why the reservation fee should not be confused with affordability
A $150 or $1,500 payment can make a future product appear accessible, but it does not reduce the eventual $299,999 purchase price unless the contract explicitly says it is credited toward the vehicle. Confirm whether the payment is refundable, transferable and held in escrow, and what happens if certification or production is delayed.
What ownership includes—and what it does not
At the equipment level, a Liberty purchase includes the integrated road-and-gyroplane platform described by PAL-V: two seats, road and flight modes, the conversion mechanism, propulsion and the vehicle’s flight and road systems. The price does not automatically include every service needed to use those systems legally.

No source cited here publishes a single annual ownership total that applies across countries. The responsible approach is to price each row for your location instead of multiplying the purchase price by an invented percentage.

Ongoing costs to put in your budget
Training and recurrent qualification
Flight operation requires appropriate pilot training and qualification. The exact license, medical standard, aircraft category and recurrent checks depend on the regulator where you fly. Obtain a written training pathway from an approved instructor before paying a deposit; the road-driving license alone is not enough to operate the aircraft mode.
Insurance
A combined road-and-aircraft vehicle can require separate or specially written cover. Ask insurers whether they cover transition operations, private strips, passenger liability, ground handling, ferry flights and storage. A normal motor policy may exclude flight, while an aviation policy may impose pilot-experience and operating-area conditions.
Fuel, maintenance and parts
The Liberty uses fuel-powered propulsion, so fuel is an operating expense rather than a charging cost. Maintenance planning should cover both road components and aviation inspections, plus the conversion mechanism that links the two modes. Request the manufacturer’s scheduled-maintenance program, parts lead times, approved service locations and the consequences of missing an inspection interval.
Storage, airfields and local charges
Owning a vehicle that can fly does not create a private right to take off or land anywhere. You may need hangar space, an approved airport or airstrip, parking, handling and landing permissions. Price those facilities before delivery, particularly if your home is far from a suitable operating location.

Is a flying car legal yet?
Legality has two separate parts: whether the vehicle can be admitted to the road and whether the aircraft can be registered and operated in the air. Approval in one country does not grant permission in another, and a road registration does not replace an aircraft certificate or pilot qualification.
PAL-V’s published progress
- PAL-V reports European road admission in 2020.
- Its company timeline says it received an EASA “No Technical Objection” on the Vehicle Certification Program in June 2024.
- The same timeline records RDW recognition as a certified automotive manufacturer in 2026.
- It also records production-organisation approval in 2026.
These are meaningful development and certification milestones, but they are not a blanket authorization for unrestricted flight. Your national aviation authority, road authority, airspace rules, pilot requirements and approved landing sites still control where and how you may operate.
Why geography changes the answer
Before ordering, ask both regulators and the seller which aircraft category applies, whether the vehicle can be registered in your country, what routes and airfields are permitted, and whether road-to-flight conversion is allowed at the location you intend to use. Get the answer in writing; a general statement that the model is “road legal” does not resolve local flight restrictions.

Availability depends on the specific model, market and production slot. A September 2026 update from PAL-V of New Hampshire says the first 250 Liberties are spoken for, new reservations were paused while production ramps, and first flights and deliveries are targeted for 2028. The same update says US-market availability has not been announced. Treat those statements as a dated regional update, not a universal promise for every buyer.
For Alef, the public page is a preorder funnel rather than a delivery schedule. A queue reservation does not establish a production slot, final specification or delivery date. Ask for a milestone-based schedule covering certification, production start, customer acceptance, shipping and local registration.
Questions that expose a realistic delivery position
- Is your country included in the seller’s current sales and support territory?
- Is the quoted vehicle a production unit, a reservation, a prototype allocation or an expected future configuration?
- What event makes the price and specification binding?
- Which approvals must be complete before delivery and before first flight?
- What happens to your payment if production, certification or local approval slips?
A practical buying and ownership checklist
- Confirm the legal pathway. Contact the road and aviation authorities in your country and identify registration, pilot, medical, airspace and landing-site requirements.
- Request a complete written quotation. Require the base price, taxes, “works,” options, delivery, training, registration assistance and warranty to appear as separate line items.
- Build two budgets. Make one for acquisition and another for annual operation, with separate estimates for insurance, fuel, inspections, parts, storage, training and airport charges.
- Validate infrastructure. Confirm a suitable airport or airstrip, hangar, maintenance provider and fuel supply before delivery.
- Read the reservation or purchase contract. Check refund rights, price changes, queue priority, delivery conditions, governing law and what happens if approvals are delayed.
- Plan for dual-use insurance and training. Obtain written confirmation that the policy and instructor cover the exact model and the operations you intend to conduct.
- Keep a contingency fund. Certification work, shipping, currency movements and local modifications can change the final amount even when the headline price is fixed.
How to compare a Liberty with an Alef reservation
Compare evidence, not just the two headline numbers. PAL-V provides a defined gyroplane architecture and published performance figures, plus a sequence of road and production approvals. Alef provides an expected price and queue reservations, while its public preorder page gives fewer final-production details. That difference does not prove one product will be better; it tells you how much remains to be verified before you can make an equivalent comparison.

Bottom line for prospective owners
Plan on a six-figure purchase before taxes for the currently published offers, then budget separately for the systems that make a road-and-aircraft vehicle usable. The PAL-V Liberty has the clearest public specification and certification trail, but its €299,000 price excludes taxes and works, and regional delivery timing remains conditional. The €499,000 Pioneer Edition is limited to 90 vehicles. Alef’s $299,999 figure is an expected future price attached to a reservation queue, not a delivered-car quote.
