Short answer: the $600 figure was the 2024 recommended price for the 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X, not a reliable 2026 checkout price. A historical bundle with three $69.99 games costs $809.96 before tax. Add one year of Game Pass Ultimate, a second controller and a performance-matched 2TB expansion card, and the same setup reaches $1,410.82 before tax. The console itself includes one controller, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a power cord, so those are not automatic add-ons.
What the $600 Xbox price actually referred to
Xbox announced the 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X at a $599.99 estimated retail price (ERP) in 2024. That was a reference price for a specific 2TB edition, not a permanent price for every Series X. The same announcement listed the 1TB disc model at $499.99 and the 1TB digital model at $449.99.

Xbox announced in June 2026 that, effective August 1, 2026, prices for the 1TB models would rise by $150 and the 2TB model would be discontinued. Applying that announced increase to the earlier figures would put the 1TB disc model at $649.99 and the 1TB digital model at $599.99, although the actual listing, regional taxes and retailer inventory determine what you pay. The 2TB Galaxy Black console should therefore be treated as a historical $600 benchmark; check the current Xbox or retailer listing before ordering.

What is included in the box
The standard Series X package already supplies the hardware needed to connect and play:
- One Xbox Series X console.
- One Xbox Wireless Controller.
- One Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- One power cord.
You do not need to budget for a first controller, HDMI cable or power cable. A second controller is only necessary for local multiplayer or when two people need to play without sharing. Xbox says Series X|S consoles support compatible Xbox One accessories, so an existing compatible controller or headset may reduce your startup cost.
How much games add
Buying three games
A representative Microsoft Store listing showed a $69.99 price for a current-release game, with a temporary $59.99 sale price on the observed page. Because individual games and sales change, $69.99 is best used as a budgeting example rather than a promise about any particular title.
Three games at that illustration price cost $209.97. Added to the historical $599.99 console, the hardware-and-games total is $809.96 before tax:

| Item | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2TB Series X reference price | — | $599.99 |
| Three games | 3 × $69.99 | $209.97 |
| Subtotal | $599.99 + $209.97 | $809.96 |
That figure excludes sales tax, optional downloadable content, microtransactions, subscriptions and any game-specific hardware. Buying used games, waiting for sales or choosing free-to-play games can lower the software portion substantially. A digital-only console also requires downloads, while the disc model gives you the option of buying physical copies; neither distinction changes the example prices above.
Buying games versus Game Pass Ultimate
Game Pass Ultimate was reduced to $22.99 per month on April 21, 2026. Twelve months at that rate is $275.88 before tax. Xbox describes Ultimate as including hundreds of games, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, in-game benefits and major day-one releases.
A year of Ultimate costs more than three $69.99 purchases ($275.88 versus $209.97), but it can provide access to many more games during the subscription period. Buying four games at the same illustration price would cost $279.96, slightly more than a year of Ultimate. That is a break-even comparison, not a guarantee that the four games you want will be in the catalog or remain available. Subscription catalogs change, and access ends when the subscription ends unless you purchase a game separately.
If you both buy three games and subscribe for a full year, the historical-console calculation becomes $1,085.84 before tax:

Choose one approach based on how you play: buy games you expect to keep and replay, or subscribe when you want a broad rotating library and included online multiplayer. Paying for both can make sense for a household that wants permanent ownership of a few favorites plus access to many additional titles, but it is the most expensive software path.
Storage: when 2TB is enough and when it is not
Internal storage in the 2TB model
The $599.99 reference console includes a 2TB internal SSD. Advertised capacity is not the same as free space after the operating system and reserved system data are installed, so the usable amount is lower than 2TB. How quickly it fills depends on the games you install: a library of smaller independent games can fit comfortably, while several large, high-resolution releases can consume hundreds of gigabytes each.
Use the console’s storage screen to watch free space rather than estimating from the box capacity. Keep frequently played games installed internally and remove titles you can redownload when space becomes tight. Your purchases remain tied to your account, but deleting a game means downloading it again later.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Xbox also supports USB 3.1 external hard drives. A USB drive can be a lower-cost way to hold games and media, but do not assume every title can run from it at the same performance as the internal SSD or an expansion card. Check the game’s storage requirement and the console’s current compatibility guidance before choosing USB as your primary drive.
Storage expansion is optional at purchase. Start with the internal 2TB capacity if your library is modest, then add a card only when repeatedly deleting and redownloading games becomes more expensive or inconvenient than the card. Buying a card immediately makes more sense for a large household library, slow internet service or several people sharing one console.

Second controller
Microsoft’s May 1, 2025 U.S. recommended pricing listed the Xbox Wireless Controller Core at $64.99. Color controllers were $69.99, special editions $79.99 and limited editions $89.99. These are recommended prices for the U.S. date shown, not guaranteed 2026 retail prices.
Adding one $64.99 Core controller to the console, three-game and one-year-Ultimate example produces $1,150.83 before tax.

Adding a 2TB expansion card
Adding the reported $259.99 2TB expansion-card price to that same scenario produces $1,410.82 before tax. The arithmetic is shown below so you can replace any line with the current price you find:
| Setup | Calculation | Total before tax |
|---|---|---|
| Console plus three $69.99 games | $599.99 + $209.97 | $809.96 |
| Above plus 12 months Game Pass Ultimate | $809.96 + $275.88 | $1,085.84 |
| Above plus second Core controller | $1,085.84 + $64.99 | $1,150.83 |
| Above plus reported 2TB expansion card | $1,150.83 + $259.99 | $1,410.82 |
The table is a planning model built from dated reference prices. It is not a current-retail quote. Sales tax, shipping, extended warranties, rechargeable batteries, headsets and game-specific peripherals can raise the checkout total further. Conversely, a sale, an existing controller, free-to-play games or a USB drive can reduce it.
Which setup fits your use?
Solo player with a small library
Budget for the console and the games you actually intend to play. The included controller and 2TB internal SSD avoid immediate accessory purchases. If you play only one or two large games at a time, defer expansion storage and subscribe for a month or two only when you want to sample a wider catalog.
Family or local multiplayer household
Add at least one second controller. At the cited Core recommendation, that is a $64.99 planning line, although color and special editions cost more. Game Pass Ultimate can also cover online console multiplayer and provide variety for several players, but account-sharing rules and catalog availability should be checked for your household’s setup.
Large digital library or slow internet connection
Prioritize storage before cosmetic accessories. The 2TB internal model delays capacity problems, and an expansion card preserves SSD-like performance. Compare the card’s current price with the time and data cost of repeatedly deleting and downloading large games.
Disc buyer
Choose a disc-capable model if you regularly buy physical games, borrow discs or resell them. A digital model can be suitable when all purchases are downloads and you accept digital-store pricing and download requirements. The historical $600 reference was specifically for the 2TB model, so do not assume a lower-capacity digital model has the same storage or current price.
A practical budgeting checklist
- Confirm the exact Series X model and current listing price; the old $599.99 2TB reference is not a safe 2026 MSRP.
- Decide whether you need a disc drive and whether your internet connection can handle large downloads.
- Count the games you will buy at their current prices instead of assuming every title costs $69.99.
- Compare that purchase total with the months of Game Pass Ultimate you will actually use. At $22.99 per month, twelve months is $275.88 before tax.
- Use the included controller first; add a second only for local multiplayer or a replacement.
- Estimate storage from your real library. Delay an expansion card until internal space becomes a recurring problem unless redownloads are impractical.
- Add your local sales tax and shipping to the pre-tax worksheet before committing.
Bottom line on the $600 Xbox
The $600 label describes a historical 2TB Series X reference, not the complete cost of ownership and not a guaranteed current price. Three typical $69.99 games raise that reference to about $810 before tax. A year of Game Pass Ultimate, a second controller and a dated $259.99 2TB expansion-card observation can push the fully equipped example to $1,410.82 before tax. Start by identifying the current console model and your actual game-library needs; then add only the subscription, controller and storage that solve a real requirement.
