Contabo lists “Unlimited Traffic,” but says exceptionally high or disruptive server traffic may be throttled at its discretion. Treat the port speed and traffic allowance as provider terms, not a guarantee that every 24/7 workload will receive unlimited throughput.
Provider energy estimates
Contabo’s energy-use help page, accessed in 2026, estimates Cloud VPS 4 at 6.7 W, or 58.7 kWh/year, and Cloud VPS 6 at 13.5 W, or 118.3 kWh/year. These are provider estimates, not independent measurements of a particular streaming workload. If you account for the provider’s estimated electricity, multiply annual kWh by your chosen electricity rate; do not add it again if you are treating the VPS bill as your full customer outlay. How to calculate the cost of a mini PC
For a computer running around the clock, estimate monthly electricity using its average power draw at the wall, not just a processor’s rated power:
Monthly electricity cost = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh
The 30-day month is an approximation. For a precise year, use 8,760 hours. For example, enter your own measured watts and tariff in the formula; no generic mini PC wattage or electricity cost is reliable across different hardware, encoders, video formats and workloads.

- Measure the mini PC while it is running the actual streaming workload. A plug-in energy meter can measure wall draw; telemetry may instead report component power, so check what it measures.
- Multiply the measured average watts by 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 to estimate kWh per month.
- Multiply monthly kWh by your electricity price per kWh.
- Add that monthly electricity cost to the PC’s purchase price and any substantiated incremental costs, such as backup power, extra network service, replacement or maintenance.
Mini PC total over N months = purchase price + (N × monthly electricity cost) + substantiated incremental costs.
Compare both options over the same period
Choose a horizon—such as 12, 24 or 36 months—and calculate both totals on that basis. The example below uses the listed monthly price multiplied by the horizon only to show the arithmetic. Since Contabo displays the cited Core VPS prices for a 24-month term, do not assume those rates are available month to month or that a shorter period can be purchased at the same monthly price.

The mini PC is cheaper over the chosen horizon only if its total is below the VPS total. A payback point can be calculated once you have real inputs, but without a specific PC’s purchase price and measured draw, an exact break-even date would be guesswork.

Cost is not the only difference
Encoding capacity and workload
Streaming pre-recorded video requires an encoder to produce the outgoing feed. The format, resolution, frame rate and encoding method affect CPU or GPU load; a processor label alone does not establish that a mini PC can handle your particular stream. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video encoding, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Home upload and outages
A mini PC depends on your home’s upstream connection and power. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate, testing upload speed and the complete stream setup, and monitoring stream health. A fast download plan does not by itself establish that the upload is adequate. Power, router or ISP interruptions can also stop a home-hosted stream. YouTube streaming tips
A VPS avoids relying on the home PC and home internet for the encoder’s continuous operation, but it introduces server administration and the provider’s traffic policy. Consider how much time you are willing to spend setting up, monitoring and recovering the stream when comparing costs.

What you need to stream from either setup
- Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Confirm the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, as required by YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private: an encoder uses it to send the feed to your channel.
- Configure the encoder on the mini PC or VPS for YouTube’s ingest settings. Select a supported codec and set bitrate to suit the resolution, frame rate and available upload; for the YouTube H.264 1080p30 recommendation, that is 14 Mbps. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Test the entire setup before relying on it. Check stream health in YouTube Studio and confirm the video, audio, bitrate and connection remain stable.

Common cost and reliability mistakes
- Comparing a 24-month VPS rate with a one-month PC bill: calculate both options over one shared horizon and verify the actual term you can buy.
- Using a PC’s idle or component power as its streaming draw: measure the running setup under the intended encoder workload and confirm whether the reading is wall power.
