Choose Loki when your visual test cases are Storybook stories and you want a dedicated story-to-baseline workflow. Choose Playwright when screenshot assertions belong inside browser journeys or page tests you already run with Playwright Test. If you need both component-level and end-to-end coverage, using each for its natural scope is a reasonable option—not an officially documented integration.
What is the difference between Loki and Playwright screenshots?
Loki is focused on testing Storybook projects for visual regressions. Its practical test unit is a Storybook story: start Storybook, create reference images, run comparisons, inspect diffs, and approve intentional changes. Loki’s project overview lists Chrome in Docker, local Chrome, the iOS simulator, and the Android emulator among supported platforms. Loki project overview

Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions as part of browser testing. With await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), the first run creates a reference image and later runs compare against it. You can assert screenshots of pages or elements, configure snapshot paths and names, and distinguish generated snapshots by browser, platform, or project. PNG is the default image format; a filename ending in .webp enables lossless WebP. Playwright screenshot comparisons

Which one should you choose?
Choose Loki for a Storybook component catalog
If your main question is whether a button, form, menu, or other component changed visually across its documented states, Loki’s Storybook-centered workflow is the direct fit. It gives those stories their own reference-image process and documents how to update, compare, review, and approve baselines. Check that its current setup fits your Storybook, Node, browser, simulator, and CI versions before adopting it: the Loki getting-started and CI pages display an update date of 2024-08-27.

Choose Playwright for page and journey assertions
If your team already writes browser tests in Playwright Test, screenshot assertions can live alongside those tests. That makes Playwright a natural choice for checking a page or element within a user journey rather than creating a separate story-based test workflow. Its documented controls include browser projects, pixel-difference thresholds, and stylesheets for hiding selected dynamic content.
Use both when the coverage targets differ
A component catalog and an end-to-end page journey answer different visual questions. It can make sense to use Loki for story-level coverage and Playwright for page-level checks. This is a practical division based on their documented scopes, not a claim that the projects provide an official integration.

Do not choose on an unsupported speed or accuracy claim
The official project documentation reviewed does not establish a comparative performance statistic or controlled study showing that one tool is inherently faster, more accurate, or less flaky. Make the decision around test scope, existing workflow, environment control, and how your team reviews baseline changes.

How do their baseline and CI workflows work?
Loki: manage Storybook references
Loki’s getting-started workflow creates reference images from Storybook stories, compares later runs, and produces images to help review differences. Treat references as code-reviewable project assets: the guide says to check them into the repository, with Git LFS as an optional way to store them. Update a reference only after deciding that the visual change is intentional.

For CI, Loki documents this static-build pattern:
build-storybook && loki --requireReference --reactUri file:./storybook-static
The --requireReference option makes absent references fail instead of allowing a CI run to pass without a baseline. Confirm the command and compatibility against the version of Loki and Storybook in your project. Loki CI guide
Playwright: assert and update snapshots
A screenshot assertion creates its reference on the first execution; later executions compare the new capture with that reference. Snapshot names and locations are configurable, and generated names can distinguish browser and platform or project. When a reviewed change is intentional, Playwright documents updating references with --update-snapshots. Avoid using a baseline update as a way to silence an unexplained failure.

Playwright recommends running tests frequently in CI and documents CI setup. For screenshot consistency, run tests in the same environment used to create the baseline. Playwright CI guide
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do you keep visual tests reliable?
Control the rendering environment
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline generation and comparison aligned: use a consistent CI image, browser version, viewport, fonts, and test data. The same general discipline benefits a Loki workflow; a changed environment can introduce visual differences that are unrelated to the code under test. Playwright snapshot guidance

- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
Make asynchronous content predictable
Loki identifies asynchronous rendering and animations as possible causes of incorrect or flaky screenshots. Its documentation says it handles common network and loading cases and disables common CSS transitions and animations, as well as requestAnimationFrame, by default. It also lists looped requestAnimationFrame, GIF, SVG and native Lottie animations, and React Native Animated as limitations that may require disabling or skipping those animations. Loki flaky tests
Filter only variation you intend to ignore
Playwright’s maxDiffPixels and custom stylePath options can help handle selected volatile content. Use them narrowly: a threshold or stylesheet can reduce noise, but neither replaces stable inputs or careful review of accepted baselines. Playwright snapshot options
How should you investigate a failed screenshot?
In Loki
Inspect the generated difference images against the current and reference captures. Determine whether the change is a real regression, an intended design update, or a rendering/setup difference before approving a new reference.
In Playwright
Use Trace Viewer to review expected, actual, and diff images together with surrounding test context. That context can help distinguish an application change from a test-state or rendering issue. Playwright Trace Viewer
Or skip the browser setup

If your need is to capture a website screenshot by API rather than maintain test baselines, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it accepts a URL in one GET request, can remove consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots—not bot checks or failed loads.
