To capture a webpage as a PDF with CaptureKit, send a GET request to its capture endpoint with the page URL, set format=pdf, and include your API key in the x-api-key header. Add full_page=true if the PDF should cover content below the visible browser viewport; full-page capture is off by default.
Make a PDF capture with CaptureKit
CaptureKit documents PDF as an output format for its Screenshot API. The documented default is PNG, so specify PDF explicitly. The endpoint accepts GET requests at https://api.capturekit.dev/v1/capture. See the Capture API reference for the current parameter list.

Before you start
- Obtain a CaptureKit API key and keep it private.
- Choose the webpage URL you want to capture.
- Use an HTTP client such as cURL, Python requests, or Node.js fetch.

Choose the capture area and readiness settings
Viewport or full page
full_page defaults to false, which captures the visible viewport rather than the entire document. Set it to true for below-the-fold content. For pages that reveal images or other content as the browser scrolls, the API also exposes full_page_scroll and full_page_scroll_duration; the documented default duration is 400 milliseconds. Adjust these when scrolling is needed to trigger lazy-loaded content, but check the resulting PDF for omissions.
Viewport dimensions
The documented viewport defaults are 1280 by 1024 pixels. Set viewport_width and viewport_height when the page needs to render at a particular browser viewport—for example, when matching a desktop or narrow layout matters. These are viewport controls; the reviewed API reference does not specify the PDF page dimensions or pagination rules.
Wait for the page to be ready
CaptureKit documents delay, wait_until, and wait_for_selector as timing and readiness controls. Use them when a page needs time to render or when a known element indicates that useful content has appeared. A fixed delay can help with slow client-side rendering, but it also adds waiting time; a selector can be more targeted when the page has a stable element to wait for. Consult the API reference for accepted values and parameter details.
Understand output and usage limits
The API reference lists one credit per call and possible HTTP responses of 400, 401, 402, 429, and 500. These indicate, respectively, a bad request, invalid API key, payment required, rate limit exceeded, and internal error. CaptureKit’s pricing page reviewed in 2026 lists PDF output on the following plans; plan terms and prices can change, so check the current pricing page before budgeting.

At one credit per call, repeated captures consume credits per request. The cited pricing page does not establish whether unused credits roll over or how overages are handled; verify those terms on the live page if they affect your workflow.
What the PDF documentation does not establish
The reviewed CaptureKit API reference does not specify the generated PDF’s page size, pagination behavior, or whether its content includes a selectable text layer or is rasterized. Do not assume its page breaks match a browser’s Print to PDF output, or that the PDF is accessible or searchable as text, without testing your actual pages and downstream requirements.
CaptureKit’s own article, dated January 30, 2026, describes its service as capturing webpages as PDFs in one request and frames API capture as useful for repeated or automated workflows, while built-in device tools suit one-off conversions. Troubleshoot common failures
- 400 Bad Request: Check that the URL is valid and that parameter names and values are accepted. Confirm that
format=pdfis included. - 401 Unauthorized: Verify that the key is valid and sent in the
x-api-keyheader, without accidental whitespace or truncation. - 402 Payment Required: Check the account’s credit or payment status and current plan terms.
- 429 Too Many Requests: Reduce request frequency and retry according to your application’s backoff policy rather than repeatedly sending immediate retries.
- 500 Internal Error: Treat it as a server-side failure; retry cautiously and preserve the response details for diagnosis.
- PDF misses content below the fold: Explicitly set
full_page=true; for lazy-loaded content, review the full-page scrolling controls and wait settings. - PDF appears incomplete despite full-page capture: Allow the page’s dynamic content to load using the documented timing controls, and test whether scrolling triggers lazy loading. The API reference does not guarantee behavior for every site.
These status meanings and the per-call credit figure are listed in the Capture API reference. For legal evidence, archiving, or compliance workflows, treat an API-generated capture as a snapshot rather than proof of admissibility or guaranteed regulatory compliance.
