A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) usually contains about three to four times more copper than a comparable gasoline car. A representative estimate is approximately 83 kilograms (183 pounds) of copper in a BEV versus about 23 kilograms (51 pounds) in a typical internal-combustion-engine vehicle (ICEV). The exact amount varies with vehicle size, battery capacity, motor design, wiring architecture and the way copper is counted.

Those figures describe copper installed in the vehicle itself. Copper in a home charger, public charging station or electricity grid is additional infrastructure and should not be added to the per-car total.

How much copper is in an electric car?

The most useful headline comparison is roughly 83 kg (183 lb) for a representative BEV and 23 kg (51 lb) for a typical gasoline or diesel vehicle. The International Copper Association (ICA) estimated 23 kg for a standard internal-combustion vehicle in 2022 and said an EV uses roughly three to four times as much copper. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) used 83 kg as a representative BEV value in a 2023 assessment, while the Copper Development Association (CDA) lists 183 lb for a typical BEV in its 2024 factsheet.

These are estimates, not a specification shared by every model. A small electric hatchback with a modest battery can contain less copper than a large electric pickup or long-range SUV. Battery size, motor power, voltage, cable lengths, thermal-management equipment and the boundary used by the source all change the result.

Quick comparison

Vehicle type Representative copper content How to interpret the figure
Conventional gasoline or diesel car (ICEV) About 23 kg (51 lb); CDA range 18–49 lb Typical estimate; size and equipment cause a wide spread
Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) About 39 kg (DOE); 85 lb (CDA) Combines an engine with a smaller electric drive system
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) About 60 kg (DOE); 132 lb (CDA) Larger battery and charging hardware than a conventional hybrid
Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) About 83 kg (DOE); 183 lb (CDA) Fully electric propulsion, with the largest high-voltage system

The DOE and CDA numbers are not identical measurements: they use different vehicle categories and source methods. The table is therefore a guide to relative material intensity, not a promise that every HEV, PHEV or BEV falls exactly on one value.

Do EVs use more copper than gas cars?

Yes. Both powertrains use copper for low-voltage wiring, motors, sensors and electronic controls, but an EV adds a high-power electrical path from the battery to the inverter and traction motor. Copper is an efficient conductor, so it is used where the vehicle must carry substantial current while keeping resistance, heat and cable weight under control.

The traction motor

Inside an EV’s traction motor, copper wire forms the stator windings that create the rotating magnetic field. The motor must deliver high torque from a standstill and operate efficiently across a broad speed range. Larger vehicles or vehicles designed for high acceleration may use more copper in their windings than a small, lower-power model.

Inverter and power electronics

The inverter converts the battery’s direct current into the alternating current used by many traction motors. Copper busbars, terminals and internal conductors carry high current through the inverter and related power-electronic components. These connections must also tolerate vibration, temperature changes and rapid power swings during acceleration and regenerative braking.

High-voltage cables and connectors

An EV has orange high-voltage cables linking the battery pack, inverter, motor, onboard charger and other loads. Copper is used in the conductors, terminals, shielding and busbars. The total depends on where the battery is mounted, whether the vehicle uses one motor or two, and how much distance the cables must cover.

Battery-pack connections

Copper appears in battery busbars, module interconnects, terminals and portions of the battery-management system. Copper foil is also used in lithium-ion battery cells, although the amount per vehicle depends on the cell chemistry, format and total energy capacity. The International Energy Agency’s 2025 methodology groups copper used at the battery-pack level—including cables and the battery-management system—under the vehicle.

Wiring looms and auxiliary systems

EVs still have conventional wiring for lighting, safety systems, infotainment, climate controls and body electronics. They may also have electrically driven compressors, pumps and fans that would be mechanically driven or arranged differently in some gasoline vehicles. The ICA identifies wiring looms, motor winding wire, energy-storage foil, busbars and power cables among the principal EV copper applications.

How much copper is in a gasoline car?

A typical ICE vehicle is estimated at about 23 kg (51 lb) of copper by the ICA. The CDA’s 2024 factsheet gives a broader conventional-car range of 18 to 49 lb, reflecting differences in vehicle size, trim, electrical equipment and accounting practice.

Gasoline cars use copper in engine-control wiring, starter motors, alternators, sensors, lighting, entertainment systems, safety equipment and general harnesses. The engine itself does not require the same high-current battery-to-motor path as a BEV. A 12-volt electrical system also carries much less power than the hundreds of volts commonly used by an EV traction system, so its conductors can be smaller for equivalent power.

Why the copper gap is not a fixed three-to-four-times rule

“Three to four times more” is a useful comparison for average vehicles, not a universal engineering constant. Several variables move the result.

Vehicle size and performance

A large SUV, pickup or performance car generally needs more conductor length, a higher-power motor and heavier-duty connections than a compact car. Comparing a compact BEV with a large gasoline vehicle can narrow the apparent gap; comparing similar-size passenger cars produces a more meaningful result.

Battery capacity

A larger battery usually means more cells, more interconnects and more battery-pack busbars. It can also support higher sustained power, requiring more substantial cables and power electronics. Battery capacity alone does not determine copper content, because cell format, pack voltage and architecture differ, but it is an important indicator.

One motor versus two

Many all-wheel-drive BEVs use separate front and rear drive units. That adds a motor, inverter, cabling and connectors compared with a single-motor layout. The added copper can be significant even when the battery capacity is unchanged.

Voltage and electrical architecture

For a given power level, higher voltage permits lower current, which can reduce conductor cross-section. A high-voltage platform may therefore carry the same power with less copper in some cables than a lower-voltage design. The overall vehicle total still depends on the number and length of circuits, motor design and battery connections.

What the source counts

One estimate may count copper in the complete battery pack; another may count only vehicle components outside the cells. Some boundaries include battery-management wiring, while others treat certain pack components separately. The numbers should be compared only after checking the category, model year and accounting boundary.

What does the IEA comparison measure?

The IEA’s current comparison is based on an average-sized car with a 65 kWh battery, approximately the 2024 sales-weighted global average. Its methodology groups battery-pack copper—including cables and the battery-management system—under the vehicle. It excludes bulk iron and aluminium from that comparison.

This approach is useful for assessing material demand across a representative global fleet, but it is not a teardown specification for a particular model. Regional vehicle mixes, battery sizes and manufacturing choices can differ substantially from the global average.

Are charger and grid copper included?

No. Vehicle copper and charging-infrastructure copper are separate accounting categories. The 83 kg or 183 lb BEV estimates refer to the car. They do not automatically include the copper in a home charging circuit, a public charging station, utility distribution equipment or transmission upgrades.

The ICA reported 43,300 tonnes of copper used for charging ports in 2021 and projected 978,000 additional tonnes for charging infrastructure by 2040. It also cited growth from 3.2 million charging ports in 2021 to 152.3 million in 2040. These are infrastructure totals across charging networks, not copper quantities to multiply by each vehicle. A charger installation may include copper in the cable, plug, switchgear, transformer connections and building wiring, but the amount varies with power rating, distance and local electrical code.

How to compare copper fairly

When a manufacturer, analyst or article gives a copper number, check five comparison axes before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Vehicle class and size: Compare similar passenger cars, or clearly identify when one example is a truck, SUV or compact car.
  2. Battery capacity: Record the BEV or PHEV battery size because pack energy and interconnect requirements affect copper use.
  3. Powertrain type: Distinguish ICE, HEV, PHEV and BEV; a hybrid is not equivalent to either a conventional car or a full BEV.
  4. Accounting boundary: State whether the number covers the vehicle only or also includes charging equipment and grid assets.
  5. Source year and method: Keep the publication year and estimation method with the number. A 2022 industry estimate, a 2023 DOE assessment and a 2024 CDA factsheet may not use identical assumptions.

If a source does not state these details, treat its figure as a rough indication rather than a precise model-level value.

What the extra copper means for manufacturing and supply

Replacing combustion vehicles with electric vehicles shifts demand toward conductors, motors, batteries and power electronics. The copper is distributed across many components rather than concentrated in one part, so supply planning involves mining, refining, wire and foil production, connector manufacturing and recycling.

Higher copper content does not mean every new vehicle requires newly mined copper. Manufacturing can use recycled copper, and end-of-life vehicles provide a recoverable source. However, recycling cannot immediately supply all future growth because vehicles remain in service for years before their materials return to processors. The pace of electrification therefore affects both primary copper demand and the need for collection and recycling capacity.

Does an EV’s copper content affect its environmental impact?

Copper is one input among many. A vehicle assessment also depends on battery materials, aluminium and steel, manufacturing electricity, vehicle efficiency, driving conditions, electricity generation and service life. The extra copper helps conduct power efficiently, but copper content alone cannot determine an EV’s total environmental footprint.

For a specific model, a credible lifecycle comparison should identify the vehicle boundary, battery production assumptions, electricity mix and recycling treatment. A simple pounds-of-copper comparison answers a materials question; it is not, by itself, a lifecycle-emissions calculation.

Common questions about copper in EVs

How many pounds of copper does an EV contain?

A representative BEV estimate is 183 pounds (83 kg). That is an average-style value from the DOE’s 2023 assessment and CDA’s 2024 factsheet, not a fixed amount for every electric car.

How many pounds of copper are in a gas car?

The ICA estimates about 51 pounds (23 kg) for a typical standard ICE vehicle. The CDA reports a broader conventional-car range of 18–49 pounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a hybrid use more copper than a gasoline car?

Generally, yes. The DOE lists about 39 kg for a representative HEV and 60 kg for a representative PHEV, compared with 23 kg for a typical ICE vehicle. CDA’s corresponding typical values are 85 lb for an HEV and 132 lb for a PHEV.

Is copper in the charger included in the 183-pound BEV figure?

No. The 183-pound estimate is for the vehicle. Charger and grid copper must be reported separately.

Why do published estimates disagree?

Sources may study different vehicle sizes, battery capacities, model years and component boundaries. One may include battery-pack copper and management wiring while another may classify those components differently. Use the source’s definition alongside its number.

Will every future EV contain three or four times as much copper?

No. Three to four times is a representative comparison between average EV and ICE vehicles. Advances in motor design, higher-voltage platforms, lighter wiring, different battery architectures and changes in vehicle size can move individual models above or below that ratio.
