For NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, plan for an additional 36 mm (1.4 inches) of space for the power cable beyond the card’s listed dimensions. That is a case-planning allowance, not a universal cable bend-radius rule. Partner RTX 5090 cards can differ, so check the exact card’s dimensions and instructions, then confirm the cable fits with the side panel closed and without being pressed.
How much clearance do I need for an RTX 5090 power cable?
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5090 Founders Edition at 304 mm long, 137 mm high and three slots, and advises allowing an additional 36 mm (1.4 inches) for power cables when planning installation. The 36 mm is extra space beyond the card dimensions, not a stated minimum bend radius or a universal connector-to-panel measurement. NVIDIA’s installation guidance also cautions that specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer.

For a partner card, use its own published dimensions and installation guidance rather than assuming the Founders Edition figure guarantees fit. Connector position and orientation can also change how the cable routes inside a particular case.

There is no single published clearance number that answers this for every RTX 5090, cable and chassis combination. Check the assembled fit: connect the cable, route it naturally, and close the side panel without force. The panel should not push the cable or connector inward. If it does, do not use the panel to compress the cable; reassess the case, card orientation or cable route using manufacturer instructions.

Measure the actual distance from the connector and cable to the closed panel, not just the gap from the card’s edge. Cable stiffness, the connector’s location and the case layout affect the result.
How far from the connector should the cable bend?
NVIDIA’s cited RTX 5090 Founders Edition guidance does not specify a universal bend-start distance. Its 36 mm figure is an allowance for cable space, not permission to bend the cable immediately at the plug or a substitute for the cable and card makers’ instructions.

- 【Compatibility】Designed specifically for RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 graphics cards, and fully compatible with ATX 3.0/3.1 power supplies.
- 【650W & PCIe 5.0】Complies with PCIe 5.0 standards, featuring 16AWG thickened alloy copper cores. This design delivers greater current capacity and lower voltage drop, ensuring stable operation without frame drops.
- 【Premium 16AWG Material】The internal core conductor boasts ultra-low resistance, so it won’t overheat during long hours of full-load operation. The thickened wire enhances heat dissipation and current transmission efficiency, meeting the strict stability requirements of professional gamers
- 【Fixed Length】Exclusively 15.75 in (40cm) long, this cable fits perfectly in both compact ITX cases and full-tower setups. Its split wire design allows for easy cable management.
- 【Injection-Molded Reinforcement】The connector and wire root are integrated via secondary injection molding, effectively preventing loose connections, overheating, and bending damage.
NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready guideline includes the power-cable bend radius in a qualifying card’s maximum height: 151 mm maximum height including the bend radius, 304 mm maximum length and 50 mm (2.5 slots) maximum depth. Those are dimensions for that compatibility guideline, not a required gap between every RTX 5090 connector and a case panel. NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready guidance should not be used in place of checking the exact card and cable.

How to check clearance in your build
- Check the exact card. Find its length, height, slot thickness, connector position and installation instructions from the card manufacturer. Founders Edition dimensions do not establish partner-card dimensions.
- Connect the power cable before installing the card, if using NVIDIA’s adapter. NVIDIA recommends connecting its adapter to the card before installing the card in the motherboard. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific card and cable.
- Seat the plug completely. NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 User Guide says: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.”
- Route the cable without forcing it. Follow the cable and GPU maker’s routing guidance; do not rely on the case panel to hold the cable in place.
- Close the side panel gently and inspect the fit. If it contacts or pushes the cable, the build does not have adequate usable clearance in that configuration. Recheck the case and card dimensions or choose a different routing or case arrangement.
Does the 36 mm clearance apply to every RTX 5090?
No. It is NVIDIA’s Founders Edition planning guidance. NVIDIA explicitly says graphics-card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer and directs users to the manufacturer’s specifications for other models. ASUS also provides model-specific instructions for plugging in a 16-pin cable, while MSI’s RTX 50-series PSU guidance discusses native 12V-2×6 power only for compatible cards. Neither establishes a universal RTX 5090 cable-clearance figure. Check the exact GPU and power supply requirements before selecting or substituting a cable.
