Matcha contains 18.9–44.4 milligrams of caffeine per gram of powder, according to a 2021 peer-reviewed review. Your drink’s total depends on how many grams you use. For comparison, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) data list about 113–247 mg in 12 fluid ounces of regular brewed, non-specialty coffee and 37 mg in 12 fluid ounces of green tea. A small matcha dose is usually below a coffee serving, while a larger dose can approach or exceed it.

Matcha caffeine in one sentence

Matcha is powdered green tea, so you consume the ground leaf instead of drinking only water that has contacted steeped leaves. The 2021 peer-reviewed review cited for this article measured 18.9–44.4 mg of caffeine per gram of matcha powder. To estimate your cup, multiply that range by the grams listed on the package or measured for your recipe.

For example, 2 g of matcha represents approximately 37.8–88.8 mg of caffeine before considering normal variation between products. That range is below the FDA’s 113–247 mg range for a 12-fluid-ounce serving of regular brewed, non-specialty coffee, but a 3 g matcha preparation could contain about 56.7–133.2 mg and overlap the lower end of that coffee range.

There is no single caffeine number for “a cup of matcha.” A useful comparison always states the powder amount, beverage volume and preparation method.

Why matcha and brewed tea are different

With ordinary green tea, leaves are steeped and then removed. Much of the caffeine remains in the discarded leaves, and the final amount depends on leaf quantity, water temperature, steeping time and product type. FDA consumer data summarize a typical 37 mg of caffeine in 12 fluid ounces of green tea, but that figure describes a prepared beverage category rather than every cup.

Matcha is whisked or shaken into water while the powder stays in the drink. The caffeine in the consumed leaf therefore matters directly. A recipe using twice as much powder generally starts with roughly twice as much caffeine, although the exact concentration varies among matcha products.

How much caffeine is in matcha by powder weight?

The peer-reviewed review’s 18.9–44.4 mg-per-gram range is the most useful starting point when a package gives a serving weight. These calculations show what the published concentration means at several powder amounts:

Matcha powder used Estimated caffeine at 18.9 mg/g Estimated caffeine at 44.4 mg/g
0.5 g 9.45 mg 22.2 mg
1 g 18.9 mg 44.4 mg
2 g 37.8 mg 88.8 mg
3 g 56.7 mg 133.2 mg
4 g 75.6 mg 177.6 mg

The figures are estimates, not a laboratory result for your particular tin. Use the product’s stated serving grams when available. If a label provides a measured caffeine value, that product-specific value takes precedence over a generic concentration range.

The calculation

Estimated caffeine (mg) = matcha powder (g) × 18.9–44.4 mg/g.

Suppose a label defines one serving as 1.5 g. Multiplying 1.5 by the published range gives approximately 28.35–66.6 mg of caffeine. A recipe that uses two servings would use 3 g and would double that estimate to about 56.7–133.2 mg.

Matcha versus coffee and green tea

The following comparison keeps the serving sizes attached to each number. The matcha values are concentration-based estimates; the coffee and green-tea values are FDA beverage figures.

Drink or material Published caffeine figure What the figure represents
Matcha powder 18.9–44.4 mg per gram 2021 peer-reviewed review; multiply by grams consumed
Green-tea material 11.3–24.67 mg per gram 2021 peer-reviewed review; concentration in green-tea material, not a fixed prepared-cup amount
Coffee beans 10.0–12.0 mg per gram 2021 peer-reviewed review; bean concentration, not the caffeine extracted into a particular brew
Prepared green tea 37 mg per 12 fluid ounces FDA category data summarized on its current consumer guidance page
Regular brewed, non-specialty coffee 113–247 mg per 12 fluid ounces FDA category data summarized on its current consumer guidance page

On the FDA’s 12-fluid-ounce comparison, regular brewed coffee usually supplies more caffeine than prepared green tea. Matcha cannot be placed on that same line without knowing its powder dose: 1 g estimates below the coffee range, 3 g can overlap its lower end, and 4 g remains within the broad coffee range but may be higher than many individual cups.

How to compare your own matcha and coffee

  1. Find the matcha amount. Read the serving size in grams. If your recipe uses more or less than one serving, record the actual total grams.
  2. Calculate a range. Multiply grams by 18.9 for the low estimate and by 44.4 for the high estimate.
  3. Record the drink volume. Note whether the matcha is a small concentrated preparation or a larger latte. Water, milk and ice change volume but do not add caffeine unless another caffeinated ingredient is included.
  4. Identify the coffee category. The FDA’s 113–247 mg figure applies to 12 fluid ounces of regular brewed, non-specialty coffee. A different brew method, serving size or product may not fit that range.
  5. Compare like with like. Compare total milligrams in the drinks you actually consume, not an unlabeled “cup.” A 6-fluid-ounce coffee and a 16-fluid-ounce matcha latte are not equivalent serving sizes.

Worked example

Imagine a matcha latte made with 2.5 g of powder. The published range gives 47.25–111 mg of caffeine (2.5 × 18.9 and 2.5 × 44.4). That estimate is below the full FDA coffee range at the low end and reaches close to its lower boundary at the high end. The latte’s milk and total volume do not change the amount of caffeine supplied by the powder.

How many milligrams are in a teaspoon of matcha?

A teaspoon is a volume measure, while the matcha concentration is reported by weight. Powder density, how tightly the spoon is packed and whether it is level or heaped all change the grams, so a teaspoon cannot be converted reliably without weighing it.

One USDA National Nutrient Database Standard Reference Legacy entry from 2018 lists 40 mg of caffeine for one teaspoon of instant unsweetened tea powder. That entry is not a universal matcha value and should not be treated as a direct measurement of every matcha product. For an accurate estimate, place the empty cup on a kitchen scale, tare it, add the matcha and use the measured grams in the formula above.

Why caffeine varies between matcha products

The 18.9–44.4 mg/g interval is wide because matcha is not a chemically identical ingredient from one package to the next. The 2021 review identifies several sources of variation:

  • Tea variety and cultivar can change the caffeine concentration.
  • Harvest age and growing conditions, including weather, affect the leaves.
  • Processing and product characteristics influence the powder’s composition.
  • Different analytical and preparation conditions can produce different measured values.

These factors explain why two powders used at the same weight may not deliver identical caffeine. They also explain why a generic internet claim such as “one teaspoon always contains” a fixed amount is misleading.

Does preparation change the caffeine you consume?

For matcha, the dominant variable is how much powder enters the drink. Whisking 2 g into 60 milliliters of water and mixing 2 g into a large latte starts with the same powder dose, so the estimated caffeine is the same even though the drinks taste and feel different. Leaving sediment in the cup or discarding part of the drink can reduce what you actually consume.

For brewed coffee and steeped tea, extraction conditions matter more. Grind size, water temperature, contact time, brew ratio and the size of the finished beverage affect how much caffeine moves from the material into the liquid. That is why the FDA presents category ranges rather than one universal number for every preparation.

Preparation checklist

  • Weigh matcha rather than relying on an unlevel teaspoon.
  • Write down the number of servings used in a shared pitcher or batch.
  • Record the finished volume if you are comparing drinks.
  • Check whether a latte, bottled drink or blend includes coffee, tea extract or another caffeine source.
  • Do not assume a “ceremonial” or premium label guarantees a particular caffeine level; the concentration still depends on the specific product.

Is matcha stronger than coffee?

“Stronger” can mean more caffeine per drink, more caffeine per gram of ingredient or a more noticeable personal effect. By total caffeine in a typical 12-fluid-ounce beverage, the FDA’s regular brewed coffee range of 113–247 mg is higher than its 37 mg green-tea figure. Matcha is dose-controlled: a 1 g serving estimates 18.9–44.4 mg, while 3 g estimates 56.7–133.2 mg.

Those numbers do not support saying matcha is always weaker or always stronger. A modest matcha preparation will usually contain less caffeine than a full coffee serving, but a large powder dose can reach or exceed the lower end of the coffee range. Individual sensitivity also changes how intense the same milligram amount feels. Caffeine quantity and subjective experience are related but not interchangeable.

Claims that matcha guarantees a uniquely “smooth” or sustained effect go beyond the cited concentration data. Your response can differ with sleep, food intake, tolerance, medications and other sources of caffeine.

How much caffeine is reasonable in a day?

The FDA says that, for most adults, 400 mg of caffeine per day is an amount not generally associated with negative effects. It describes that amount as roughly two to three 12-fluid-ounce cups of coffee, while also warning that product amounts and container sizes vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 400 mg figure is not a personal target or a promise of safety for every person. Caffeine sensitivity, medications, medical conditions, pregnancy and breastfeeding can change what is appropriate. If any of those apply, ask a qualified clinician for individualized advice.

Track the whole day, not one drink

  1. Write down the grams of matcha and estimated caffeine for each serving.
  2. Add caffeine from coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, chocolate, supplements and medications that contain it.
  3. Include repeat servings and refills; a second matcha uses a second powder dose.
  4. Compare the daily total with medical guidance appropriate to you, rather than relying only on the number printed on one package.

Choosing and labeling matcha for predictable caffeine

If caffeine consistency matters, look for a product that states serving size in grams and provides a tested caffeine value or a clearly identified specification. A label that gives only “one teaspoon” leaves more room for error because spoon volume does not reveal powder mass.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing “a cup” with “a cup”

Problem: Cup sizes differ, and matcha recipes vary in powder weight. Fix: Put milligrams, grams and fluid ounces beside every comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the coffee-bean number as a brewed-cup number

Problem: The review’s 10.0–12.0 mg/g figure describes coffee beans, not the caffeine extracted into your mug. Fix: Use the FDA’s 113–247 mg per 12-fluid-ounce category range when discussing regular brewed, non-specialty coffee, and qualify other preparations.

Treating the USDA teaspoon value as matcha-specific

Problem: The 2018 USDA entry concerns instant unsweetened tea powder. Fix: Weigh your matcha and calculate from its grams; use the USDA number only as a separate reference for that named food entry.

Assuming a label’s serving is your serving

Problem: A recipe may use half, one-and-a-half or several labeled servings. Fix: Multiply the actual grams in the bowl or shaker, not the package’s suggested serving count.

Forgetting other caffeine sources

Problem: A matcha latte may be consumed alongside coffee, tea, chocolate or a supplement. Fix: Add every source when monitoring daily intake.

Practical takeaways

  • Use 18.9–44.4 mg per gram as the published matcha concentration range.
  • Weigh powder whenever you need a dependable estimate.
  • Expect a 12-fluid-ounce brewed coffee to contain substantially more caffeine than the FDA’s 12-fluid-ounce green-tea figure, but do not assign matcha a fixed cup value without its gram dose.
  • Remember that the FDA’s 400 mg-per-day statement applies to most adults and does not override individual medical advice.
  • Report the powder weight and beverage volume whenever you tell someone how much caffeine a matcha drink contains.

Matcha and coffee are not opposites on a caffeine scale. Matcha’s concentration is known per gram, and your preparation determines the total. Coffee commonly provides more caffeine in a standard 12-fluid-ounce brewed serving, while a carefully measured larger matcha dose can narrow or erase that difference. The most accurate answer is therefore the one tied to the actual grams, volume and product in your cup.
