Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a one-input, one-destination Nginx RTMP relay, plan for roughly the stream’s bitrate on each network leg: the encoder uploads one copy to Nginx, and Nginx uploads one copy to YouTube. At a steady 5 Mbps, that is about 5 Mbps of upload from the encoder and 5 Mbps of upload from the relay server; the relay handles both legs, or about 5 Mbps received plus 5 Mbps sent. Nginx does not impose a universal bandwidth multiplier.
How to estimate bandwidth for an Nginx RTMP relay
Start with the encoded stream bitrate, then count how many network links carry a copy. In a simple relay, the video is forwarded without transcoding, so its bitrate is approximately the same on the way into Nginx and on the way out to YouTube. Allow additional capacity for protocol overhead and other network traffic.

- Encoder to Nginx: roughly one stream bitrate of encoder upload.
- Nginx to YouTube: roughly one stream bitrate of relay-server upload.
- Total traffic at the relay: roughly one stream bitrate received plus one sent.
For a direct encoder-to-YouTube connection, with no relay, the encoder needs only the one outgoing leg. If Nginx sends the feed to multiple destinations, count roughly one outgoing copy per destination. You do not multiply the origin upload by YouTube’s viewer count: viewers receive YouTube’s distribution, not separate copies from your relay. NGINX describes RTMP support as functionality provided by a third-party module; the topology and whether you transcode—not a fixed Nginx multiplier—determine bandwidth use. NGINX documentation
Use YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate as a planning reference
The following are YouTube’s listed recommended ingest bitrates, not measured Nginx requirements or hard minimum internet speeds. Choose a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and quality target. YouTube also lists lower minimum bitrate settings; its current guidance includes CBR, up to 60 fps, a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and 128 Kbps stereo audio. | Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended | AV1 / H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
For example, an H.264 1080p30 stream using YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation needs roughly 14 Mbps on each leg of a one-destination relay. At 1080p60, the H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps per leg. The encoder’s connection must sustain its upload to the relay; the relay host must sustain its upload to YouTube while receiving the encoder feed.
Estimate data transferred per hour
For a steady stream, multiply its bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to estimate decimal gigabytes transferred per hour on one network leg. This is a unit conversion, not a measured ISP bill; it excludes protocol overhead and additional copies.

| Stream bitrate | Approximate data per hour, one leg | Approximate relay total per hour, receive plus send |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 2.25 GB | 4.5 GB |
| 10 Mbps | 4.5 GB | 9 GB |
| 14 Mbps | 6.3 GB | 12.6 GB |
| 17 Mbps | 7.65 GB | 15.3 GB |
| 50 Mbps | 22.5 GB | 45 GB |
To estimate a longer run, multiply the hourly figure by the number of hours. If the relay sends to more than one destination, include each outgoing copy. Actual ISP billing and server transfer accounting vary by provider; these estimates do not establish a particular provider’s policy or the headroom needed on a shared connection. Leave headroom and test the real stream
YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee that a shared connection can sustain a stream continuously, so test the actual setup before an event and monitor it while live. Use representative audio and motion, since a static test clip may not reflect the real workload. YouTube’s LiveStreams API health status can flag problems including low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, missing audio, or bitrate settings outside recommendations. Choose the right link to test
- Test the encoder’s upload path to the relay, not just the relay server’s internet connection.
- Check that the relay’s upload path to YouTube can sustain the outgoing stream while the server is receiving it.
- For a direct upload, test the encoder’s upload path to YouTube.
- Retest with other expected household, office, or server traffic active if the connection is shared.
Use RTMPS when connecting to YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and identifies the RTMPS ingestion URL and port 443. The cited documentation does not quantify a fixed percentage of bandwidth overhead for RTMPS, so retain reasonable headroom rather than applying an invented overhead figure. Transcoding or multiple renditions
If the workflow transcodes the incoming feed or creates separate renditions, do not assume every output has the source bitrate. Account for each output’s actual bitrate on the links where it travels. The Nginx documentation cited above does not establish a fixed bandwidth multiplier for transcoding.

More than one destination
Each destination adds an outgoing copy from the relay. Estimate the relay’s total outbound capacity by adding the bitrate of every destination feed; if the copies have different settings, add their individual bitrates rather than multiplying one assumed value.

Monthly transfer or ISP allowance
The hourly conversion can help estimate sustained data transfer, but it cannot tell you how a particular ISP or hosting provider bills traffic. Check the relevant plan’s accounting rules and compare them with the relay’s incoming and outgoing traffic.
