Microgravity reduces convection and sedimentation in the liquid around a growing protein crystal. For some proteins and experimental setups, that can help molecules join the crystal more evenly, producing crystals whose order or size improves X-ray diffraction. Scientists can use the resulting structures to study drug targets and guide compound design—but space-grown crystals do not automatically improve every experiment or prove that a treatment works.
What changes when a protein crystal grows in microgravity?
On Earth, gravity moves the solution
A protein crystal forms as molecules dissolved in a liquid assemble into a repeating, ordered structure. On Earth, gravity contributes to sedimentation and convection: molecules and warmer or cooler portions of the solution move around the growing crystal. Those flows can alter the conditions at its surface and contribute to uneven growth or defects.

In microgravity, some disturbances are reduced
With gravity-driven convection and sedimentation reduced, molecules near a crystal can be incorporated under steadier conditions. NASA and the ISS National Laboratory describe possible outcomes such as slower, more orderly growth and crystals that are larger, more uniform, or better ordered. These are potential advantages, not guaranteed results: the protein, solution, and experimental setup all matter.
How can a crystal help with drug discovery?
A crystal is a tool for studying a protein, not a medicine. In X-ray crystallography, researchers measure how X-rays diffract from the crystal and use the data to determine or refine a three-dimensional model of the protein. Better-ordered crystals can produce more useful diffraction data, which may support a more accurate structural model.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

- Grow the target protein crystal. Researchers select the protein and conditions for a particular experiment.
- Collect diffraction data. X-rays are directed at the crystal, and the resulting diffraction pattern is measured.
- Determine or refine the structure. Researchers use the data to build a model of the protein’s three-dimensional arrangement.
- Apply the structural information. The model can help researchers understand the protein’s function or investigate how compounds might interact with it.
This chain can inform research on drug targets and rational drug design. It does not, by itself, show that a candidate compound is safe or effective, or that a resulting treatment will be approved.
What research examples show—and what they do not
Duchenne muscular dystrophy research
In a 2023 account, NASA reported that JAXA microgravity work on a protein associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy revealed structural clues used in designing compounds that included TAS-205. NASA’s account said an early patient trial had been completed in 2017 and that a larger Phase 3 trial began in December 2020, with completion then expected through 2027. Those are milestones and expectations reported in 2023, not a statement of the trial’s current status or outcome.

Pembrolizumab crystal suspensions
NASA reported that ISS National Laboratory-sponsored PCG-5 produced high-quality crystalline suspensions of pembrolizumab (Keytruda), a therapeutic antibody. The work explored potential support for injection-based delivery. NASA’s 2023 account described follow-up PCG 20 research as ongoing; it did not establish that the space-grown suspension had become an approved injection formulation.
Why space-grown crystals are not always better
Microgravity is an experimental condition, not a universal shortcut to a better structure. NASA’s Technical Reports Server review describes a flight experiment in which the crystals were inferior to, though visually comparable with, ground-grown crystals. The same review discusses a sounding-rocket experiment that provided six minutes of microgravity and reported crystals about 100 microns long; those figures describe that historical experiment, not a general result for space-grown crystals.
Results need to be judged for the specific target and protocol. A fair Earth-versus-space comparison asks whether the crystal’s measured properties improve enough to help answer the scientific question—not simply whether one crystal looks larger.

- Order and uniformity: Did the crystal grow with fewer defects or more consistent structure?
- Growth and reproducibility: Did the result recur for the same protein and solution conditions?
- Practical value: Was any measurable gain worth the logistics of launching, operating, and recovering the experiment?
Protein structures and therapeutic formulations are different goals
Crystallizing a protein target for structural biology is not the same task as crystallizing a therapeutic product for manufacturing or delivery. In the first case, the purpose is to learn about the target’s structure. In the second, researchers investigate a formulation or delivery approach for a medicine. The ISS National Laboratory overview discusses both kinds of work, but its page does not provide a publication date; its reported count of therapeutic products crystallized in space should therefore not be treated as a current 2026 total.
