First identify where the failure happens
Write down the distribution and release, installed Budgie version, selected session entry, display manager and greeter, compositor if known, graphics hardware and driver, and monitor arrangement. Note whether the problem began after an upgrade, suspend or resume, connecting a display, or changing a setting. These details help distinguish a desktop-session problem from a login or display-stack problem.

Describe the exact symptom rather than treating every failure as a “Budgie display problem.” For example, does the screen go black before the greeter appears, does authentication return to the login screen, does the desktop become blank only after login, are the panel or Raven missing or misplaced, is the monitor layout wrong, or does the session freeze? Each points to a different part of the startup and display chain.

Distinguish the greeter, locker, and desktop session
The login greeter is not the Budgie desktop session. A display manager launches the greeter and offers session choices; after authentication, it starts the selected desktop session. A screen locker is another component and may be supplied separately. A problem with one does not establish that the others are broken.

Before editing login configuration, record the display manager or greeter and the exact session entry selected at login. Budgie’s upstream FAQ discusses budgie-session and systemd integration. A 2022 Ubuntu Budgie forum discussion gives distribution-specific examples involving LightDM, Slick Greeter, and a separate screen locker; those examples are not defaults to assume on other distributions or newer releases (Ubuntu Budgie community discussion).
Check the Budgie version and display protocol
Budgie 10.10 uses Wayland
Buddies of Budgie states in its Building Budgie Desktop documentation: “Budgie 10.10 is Wayland-only and does not support X11.” Its integration uses labwc and Wayland protocols. If you are running 10.10, make sure the login session you selected is Wayland-based; an X11-only setting or repair recipe does not apply to this release. Budgie 10.10 was announced on January 10, 2026 (release announcement).

For 10.10, protocol support can affect where desktop elements appear. Upstream specifically notes that without support for wlr-layer-shell-unstable-v1, panels, Raven, and popovers should not be expected to position correctly (Building Budgie Desktop). If one of these is absent or misplaced, check the compositor and its protocol support rather than assuming a panel preference alone will solve it.

Earlier Budgie 10 releases use the prior X11-only line
The upstream FAQ distinguishes Budgie 10.10 from earlier Budgie 10 releases, which belong to the prior X11-only line (Budgie FAQ). Confirm the installed version before following instructions written for either display protocol. Distribution release numbers, package versions, and available session entries can differ, so the distribution’s package information and documentation are the right place to confirm what is installed and supported.

Diagnose monitor layout and saved display settings
For Budgie 10.10, upstream recommends wdisplays for managing monitor arrangements and resolutions. Budgie Desktop Services are described as saving display settings across sessions. This is upstream guidance; whether the relevant tool and services are packaged, enabled, and started depends on the distribution.
- Confirm the session and hardware. Note whether the issue affects one monitor or all displays, and whether it followed hotplug, suspend/resume, or an upgrade.
- Check the layout in wdisplays. If available for your distribution and session, inspect each monitor’s resolution and position and apply the intended arrangement.
- Check persistence separately. If the layout works but resets at the next login, check whether your distribution provides and starts Budgie Desktop Services. Do not assume that a successful one-session change proves settings will persist.
Use 10.10.2 workarounds only for their matching symptoms
Budgie 10.10.2 release notes document several targeted changes (Budgie 10.10.2 notes). They are useful when the installed version and symptom match, not as general fixes for any graphics fault.

WLR_NO_HARDWARE_CURSORSas a workaround for this virtual-machine graphics case. Do not set it as a general response to cursor or display trouble. - Scaling: the release removed an extra scaling factor because Wayland handles DPI natively. Avoid carrying over scaling adjustments without checking whether they were intended for an older setup.
- Session data and portals: the release restored Budgie session data and portal startup. If a session or portal-related issue began around an upgrade, compare the installed release and distribution packaging with those notes before changing configuration.
If the session still will not start
If the desktop is unusable, use the recovery route documented for your distribution and release, such as its supported text console or recovery entry. There is no single recovery command sequence established for all Linux distributions here; package names, log locations, and service management vary. Verify any command against your distribution’s documentation before running it.
When seeking help, include the distribution and release, Budgie package versions, selected session, display manager, graphics hardware and driver, and the exact point of failure. Add relevant display-manager logs and journal errors, plus what changed immediately before the problem. This makes it possible to separate a greeter failure, session startup failure, compositor/protocol issue, and monitor-configuration problem without guessing.
