That shift can alter cell shape, gene and protein activity, DNA regulation, communication between neighboring cells, differentiation, and tissue behavior. It does not produce one universal response: effects depend on the cell type, the model, how long it is exposed, whether the experiment is in orbit or on Earth, and which endpoint is measured.
The strongest evidence comes from carefully bounded models. NASA reports that mouse embryonic stem cells flown in low Earth orbit for 15 days showed inhibited differentiation and retained more stem-like characteristics under mechanical unloading. Human organoids and organ chips are being used to examine selected tissue processes, but they are not complete organs and cannot by themselves predict how a whole human body develops in space. Spaceflight also includes radiation and other stressors, so a result from orbit is not automatically a microgravity-only result.

What microgravity changes inside a cell
Gravity is one part of the physical environment surrounding a cell. Cells attach to surfaces, pull on neighboring cells and the extracellular matrix, move internal structures, and constantly adjust their shape in response to force. When the normal load is greatly reduced, those mechanical cues change. NASA’s Space Biology Program examines how spaceflight affects living systems from molecules through cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and microbial communities.
The agency tracks several classes of response rather than looking for a single spaceflight signature:

- Changes in gene and protein expression can indicate that cells are switching metabolic, stress, growth, or repair programs.
- DNA function and structure can change even when the cell remains alive, potentially altering which instructions are used.
- Cell morphology, including shape and internal organization, can reveal a response to altered mechanical loading.
- Cell-to-cell communication can shift, changing how cells coordinate differentiation, inflammation, barrier function, or tissue repair.
- Functional endpoints such as movement, specialization, and tissue organization may change without every gene changing in the same direction.
These categories explain why it is misleading to say that microgravity simply speeds up or slows down cell growth. A cell may divide at one rate, change shape, alter gene expression, and differentiate differently at the same time. The measured endpoint and the cell’s developmental state determine what is observed.
Why there is no single effect on human organ development
Organ development is a coordinated process, not a property of one isolated cell. It depends on stem-cell decisions, physical architecture, blood-vessel and nerve interactions, immune signals, nutrient delivery, waste removal, and communication among many cell types. Microgravity could affect several of those inputs, but the direction and size of the effect can differ among tissues.
A result in a cultured stem-cell line does not establish what happens in a developing human organ. Culture conditions omit circulation, the full immune system, endocrine signals, and many three-dimensional structures. Even a sophisticated organoid reproduces only selected features of an organ. An animal study adds whole-body interactions, but species biology and development are not identical to human biology. Astronaut observations provide the most direct human evidence, yet they combine microgravity with radiation, altered circadian schedules, confinement, exercise countermeasures, nutrition, and other mission conditions.
For that reason, NASA’s cell investigations span multiple levels of organization. Each level answers a different question: molecular assays can show which pathways respond; cells can show changes in shape or specialization; tissues and organ chips can show coordinated local behavior; animals can reveal whole-body effects; and astronaut studies can show whether a response is clinically relevant to people.
What the clearest stem-cell experiment found
Mouse embryonic stem cells in low Earth orbit
NASA describes an experiment in which mouse embryonic stem-cell cultures flew for 15 days on the STS-131 mission. Under the reduced mechanical loading of orbit, differentiation was inhibited and the cells retained more characteristics of their undifferentiated state, often described as preserved stemness. The cells were followed during the flight and after they returned to normal gravity. Details of the investigation are summarized in NASA’s Cell and Molecular Biology experiments program.

This is an important mechanistic finding, but its scope matters. The cells were from mice, the exposure lasted 15 days, and the endpoint concerned differentiation in a culture model. It does not show that every human stem cell remains undifferentiated in space, that human organs fail to develop, or that a particular astronaut will experience the same response. It does show why mechanical unloading is investigated as a possible regulator of cell fate.
What the experiment can and cannot tell us
- It can show: a measurable change in the balance between maintaining a stem-like state and differentiating under a defined flight condition.
- It cannot show: how a complete human organ would form, how long the effect would persist in a person, or whether radiation contributed to the observed result.
- It also cannot provide: a universal growth rate, a cross-organ dose-response curve, or a clinical treatment recommendation.
How organ chips and organoids extend the evidence
Bone-marrow organ chips in AVATAR
NASA’s AVATAR investigation uses bone-marrow organ chips to study the combined effects of microgravity and increased radiation. A tissue chip is a small microphysiological system built from organ-specific cells. It is designed to reproduce selected interactions in human tissue under controlled conditions, making it easier to isolate mechanisms than a whole-body experiment.
Recommended Free Tools
NASA says the returned AVATAR chips would be examined with single-cell RNA sequencing. That method can compare gene-expression patterns among individual cells rather than averaging all cells together. The stated purpose is to identify cell-specific changes relevant to astronaut health. The sequencing is an intended analysis of the investigation, not a completed finding; the AVATAR investigation page describes the design and goals.
What a three-dimensional tissue chip represents
NASA’s 3D Tissue Chips program uses small systems containing human organ-specific cells. Their three-dimensional structure can reproduce selected features that flat cell cultures cannot, such as local cell contacts and gradients. The systems can then be used to examine morphology, molecular signals, and tissue functions under microgravity, radiation, or both.
A chip is still a model. It does not reproduce every vessel, nerve, hormone, immune cell, or mechanical connection in an intact organ. Nor does it demonstrate that complete transplantable organs can be grown in orbit. Its value is narrower and more practical: it helps test a defined mechanism and identify which cell populations respond.

Human neural organoids in low Earth orbit
A NASA Open Science Data Repository record describes long-term cultures of patient-specific neural cells in low Earth orbit. The system combines induced-pluripotent-stem-cell-derived microglia and neurons in three-dimensional organoids. The investigation is listed as human neural organoids aboard the International Space Station; its record is available at NASA’s Open Science Data Repository.
These organoids allow study of interactions among human neural cell types and disease-related processes in a controlled three-dimensional setting. They are not full human brains. They lack the complete anatomy, circulation, sensory inputs, and developmental context of a brain in a person, so a response in the organoid should not be presented as proof of altered human brain development.
How to compare evidence from cells to astronauts
When two studies appear to disagree, the first question should be whether they measured the same thing in the same kind of model. The following framework keeps conclusions within the evidence.
| Evidence level | Typical question | What the result supports |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated cells | Does altered mechanical loading change cell shape, gene activity, or differentiation? | A cell-level mechanism under defined culture conditions. |
| Organoid | Do several human cell types interact differently in a three-dimensional model? | A selected tissue process, such as neural-cell communication. |
| Organ chip | How do organ-specific cells respond to microgravity, radiation, or both? | A controlled, mechanistic tissue response and cell-specific molecular signatures. |
| Animal | Does a response affect an integrated organism? | Whole-body evidence in that species, with limits on direct human translation. |
| Astronaut | Does spaceflight produce a measurable human physiological or clinical change? | Human relevance, while retaining the confounding effects of the full space environment. |
For every study, record six details: the model, actual spaceflight or ground-based simulation, exposure duration, co-exposures such as radiation, the cell or organ system, and the endpoint. A gene-expression change is not the same as a functional loss; a morphology change is not the same as failed organ development; and a short experiment is not evidence about lifelong exposure.
What is known about whole-body physiology
Bone is a clear human-relevant example
NASA reports that weight-bearing bones lose an average of 1% to 1.5% of mineral density per month during spaceflight. NASA gives this figure on its overview of the human body in space; the page does not state a publication year for the figure. It is a whole-body bone-physiology estimate, not a rate of cell growth and not a universal rate of organ development.

The figure illustrates why tissue-level consequences matter. Bone is maintained through coordinated activity among multiple cell types and mechanical loading from the skeleton. Reduced loading can therefore produce a measurable physiological change even though the underlying cellular responses involve many pathways. The statistic should not be transferred to the brain, liver, heart, or any other organ.
Other concerns raised in the literature
A 2014 review in PubMed Central identified bone and muscle loss, impaired wound and bone-fracture healing, and immune effects as important spaceflight concerns. The review, Stem Cell Health and Tissue Regeneration in Microgravity, is useful for framing why responses from cells through integrated tissues are studied. It predates newer NASA investigations, so it should not be treated as the sole source for current mission findings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Microgravity is not the same as the entire space environment
Orbit changes more than gravity. Radiation can damage or stress cells; spacecraft contain unusual atmospheric, nutritional, circadian, and operational conditions; and astronauts follow exercise and medical protocols that are not present in a dish. A flight experiment that reports a response after exposure to all of these factors cannot automatically assign the effect to microgravity alone.
This problem is addressed by comparing flight samples with ground controls, using simulated microgravity where appropriate, and designing investigations that separately examine radiation. Organ chips are especially useful for this separation because microgravity and radiation can be varied while other culture conditions are held as constant as possible. Even then, a simulation reproduces selected physical features rather than every condition of orbit.
What microgravity could mean for developing organs
Human organ development requires cells to move, specialize, attach, and organize in precise spatial patterns. Altered mechanical signals could influence those decisions, as the mouse stem-cell experiment suggests. But the available evidence does not establish that microgravity universally suppresses, accelerates, or redirects development in every human organ.
Best Value
Several outcomes remain plausible depending on tissue and timing: a stem-cell population might maintain an earlier state longer; a tissue might organize differently in three dimensions; cell communication might change without obvious loss of viability; or a mature tissue might show altered repair rather than altered development. These are research questions, not established predictions for a human embryo or astronaut.
No single quantitative answer currently describes human organ development under microgravity. The available studies do not provide a harmonized cross-organ dose-response summary, and they do not establish how effects would scale from short missions to years. Long-duration, multi-cell human models and carefully controlled human physiology studies are needed to connect molecular changes with organ-level function.
How to read a headline about cells in space
- Identify the model. Check whether the result came from isolated cells, an organoid, a tissue chip, an animal, or astronauts.
- Check the gravity condition. Actual orbit, a rotating or otherwise simulated system, and normal Earth gravity are not interchangeable controls.
- Find the exposure duration. The 15-day mouse experiment cannot answer a question about years of development.
- Look for co-exposures. Radiation and other mission conditions may be part of the result.
- Read the endpoint. Gene expression, morphology, differentiation, tissue function, and clinical outcomes are separate measurements.
- Ask what was not measured. A study can support a mechanism without showing an organ-level or health outcome.
This approach prevents the most common overstatement: treating an interesting cellular response as proof that a complete human organ will grow differently or that astronauts will develop a specific disease.

- Whether human cells from different donors show the same response or substantial individual variation.
- Which effects are caused by mechanical unloading alone and which require radiation or another spaceflight stressor.
- How short exposures compare with months or years in orbit.
- Whether a molecular or morphological change produces a lasting functional consequence.
- How responses differ among developing tissues, mature organs, and regenerating tissue after injury.
- Whether countermeasures such as exercise, altered culture conditions, or medical interventions prevent or reverse specific changes.
NASA’s ongoing work with cell cultures, organoids, tissue chips, animals, and astronaut samples is designed to connect these levels without assuming that one model answers every question. Until those links are demonstrated, the most accurate conclusion is specific rather than absolute: microgravity changes cellular mechanical signaling and can alter differentiation and tissue behavior, but its effect on human organ development depends on the tissue, exposure, co-stressors, and endpoint being studied.
