Find your assigned drop box through Michigan’s official drop-box page or Michigan.gov/Vote. Put your completed absentee ballot in its signed return envelope and deposit it in the assigned box in your community by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Michigan says boxes are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning 40 days before an election.
How to find the drop box assigned to you
Drop-box locations are tied to your city or township. Use Michigan.gov/Vote to look up the box for your community and check the current election information. Do not assume that any box in Michigan will accept your ballot: the state says voters must use their assigned box.

Local clerks enter location information into the Qualified Voter File, which supports the voter lookup. Avoid relying on an old address list; locations and election-specific details can change.
How to return your ballot in a drop box
- Complete your absentee ballot and place it in the signed return envelope.
- Take it to the drop box assigned to your city or township.
- Deposit it by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The ballot must be in a drop box in your community by that cutoff to count.
Michigan describes the boxes as similar in appearance to postal boxes but built to securely store ballots. Clerk staff collect ballots and transfer them securely to the clerk’s office, where they remain stored until processing begins. You can check mail-ballot status through Michigan.gov/Vote; a status lookup is not a substitute for meeting the return deadline.

When Michigan drop boxes are available
The state says drop boxes are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting 40 days before each election. For a particular election, confirm the current location and instructions through the official lookup.
Can someone else return your ballot?
For a drop box, Michigan says voters may deposit only their own ballot. The state’s broader rules for ballots returned to a clerk allow limited authorized delivery categories; those rules are distinct from the drop-box rule. If you need someone else to deliver your ballot, ask your local clerk which options apply to your circumstances. See the state’s elections and voting FAQ and absentee voting guidance.

How drop boxes are secured
Michigan says its drop boxes are made of heavy-duty steel, locked, affixed to the ground, and covered by security cameras. The state says official clerk staff who have taken a legal oath collect ballots at least once each day. These are the safeguards described in state guidance; they do not establish the receipt or counting status of a particular ballot.
Statewide municipal requirements address box numbers, placement, accessibility, installation, and monitoring. The Bureau of Elections’ November 2023 AV Drop Box Requirements and Recommendations sets a minimum of one box per municipality and one per 15,000 registered voters, with equitable distribution and public accessibility. It specifies video monitoring for all drop boxes beginning January 1, 2026. These are municipal requirements, not a measure of individual ballot outcomes.

Other ways to return an absentee ballot
Michigan lists mail, a drop box, the clerk’s office, an early voting site, and an Election Day polling location among the return options. The deadline depends on the method:
| Return method | Key timing or condition |
|---|---|
| Assigned drop box | Deposit in your community by 8 p.m. on Election Day. |
| Generally, the local clerk must receive the ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day. | |
| Military or overseas ballot by mail | Must be postmarked by Election Day and received within six days after the election. |
| Clerk’s office, early voting site, or polling location | Follow current local instructions and the applicable deadline. Detroit voters cannot tabulate absentee ballots at Detroit polling places on Election Day; Detroit voters may return them by drop box or to the local clerk’s office. |
These deadlines and options are described in the state’s absentee voting guidance and Election Fact Center. Check your clerk’s current instructions for precise local procedures.
