One can be enough when you mainly listen from one seat and it provides the output you want. Consider two or more when you need bass to be more consistent across several seats or want additional output. The room, placement and receiver setup matter as much as the count.
When is one subwoofer enough?
Start with one subwoofer if you have a primary listening seat, limited space or budget, or are satisfied with its output. A single sub can work well for an individual listening position; adding another is not a requirement for every home theater. Harman’s research on subwoofer number and placement addresses how those choices interact with the room, rather than setting a universal count.

Would a second subwoofer make bass more even across seats?
It may. Room reflections and standing waves can create bass peaks and dips, and the effect can differ from one listening position to another. Multiple subwoofers placed and configured appropriately can reduce some of that seat-to-seat variation. Revel’s B10 manual explains how room effects vary by listener location, while Klipsch’s support guidance also describes the potential benefit of a pair in reducing variation. Neither makes an improvement guaranteed: results depend on the room and where the subs go.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf several people regularly watch from different seats, that broader listening area is a stronger reason to investigate multiple subs than simply counting speakers. If you listen alone from one main seat, first see whether one sub can be placed and set up effectively there.

How room use and placement affect the decision
There is no placement rule that works in every room. Dolby Professional Support says, “There are no hard rules for subwoofer cabinet placement.” Its guidance distinguishes two uses that can lead to different placement choices:
- Managing room modes: In a room with strong modal behavior, Dolby describes spacing subwoofers across the front wall to temper the dominance of room modes. This is context-dependent guidance, not a guaranteed layout for every room.
- Supporting particular speakers for bass management: When multiple subs are used solely for bass management, Dolby recommends placing them near the speakers they support.
Before buying another unit, consider whether your room offers separate, workable locations and what listening area you are trying to cover. More subwoofers are not an automatic cure for uneven bass; placement and configuration have to work together.

What your receiver can support
AV receiver features and menu options vary. Check your receiver’s manual to learn how it handles multiple subwoofer outputs and which layouts it permits; the presence of more than one output does not establish that every receiver offers the same controls. For example, the Marantz Cinema 50 manual documents selectable subwoofer layouts, including a directional mode tied to speaker locations. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a feature list for other receivers.

A practical way to choose
- Define the listening area. Decide whether you are optimizing mainly for one seat or for several seats used regularly.
- Assess your current setup. If one sub provides satisfactory output at your main seat, a second is optional. If bass varies noticeably across seats or you need more output, consider whether another sub could address that goal.
- Check placement options. Identify locations that suit the room and intended use. Dolby’s placement guidance is useful context, but it does not prescribe one universal arrangement.
- Read the receiver manual. Confirm supported subwoofer layouts and setup controls before choosing a configuration.
- Compare placements and calibrate. If you add a sub, evaluate the combined result across the seats you care about. Optional measurement or multi-sub optimization tools can help with comparison; miniDSP’s Tide16 documentation discusses multi-sub placement and optimization.
Do you need two subwoofers for a home theater?
No. Two or more are worth considering when broader seat coverage or additional output is important and your room and receiver support a workable setup. For one principal listener who is content with the bass from a single unit, one subwoofer is a sensible choice.
