Biomass can be turned into gasoline through several routes, but there is no single recipe: the right process depends on the feedstock and the intermediate it produces. Gasification creates syngas; other pathways start with sugars or bio-oil. Each intermediate needs its own cleanup, conversion and separation steps before it can become a gasoline blendstock or finished fuel.
What “upgrading” means
Upgrading is the conversion of a biomass-derived intermediate into fuel blendstocks or finished fuels. The intermediate may be syngas, sugar-derived material or bio-oil. Depending on the route, the work can involve biological processing, catalysts, purification, separation and refinery finishing. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Synthesis & Upgrading overview emphasizes that the steps depend on the composition of the intermediate stream.

A blendstock is not automatically finished, specification-compliant gasoline. Until the necessary processing and blending are complete, an intermediate such as bio-oil or a partially converted stream should not be treated as fuel ready for an ordinary gasoline vehicle.
Which biomass-to-gasoline routes are used?
| Route | Feedstock fit | Main intermediate | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasification and catalytic synthesis | Biomass suited to high-temperature processing with some oxygen; the DOE overview does not establish a single moisture threshold. | Syngas, primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen | Clean and condition the gas, then use catalytic synthesis; the NREL example passes through methanol to gasoline blendstock. |
| Sugar upgrading | Biomass that can be pretreated and hydrolyzed to release sugars | Sugar-derived streams | Purify and concentrate streams for aqueous-phase reforming and fractionation, or use biological upgrading, depending on the configuration. |
| Pyrolysis and bio-oil upgrading | Biomass heated without oxygen | Condensed pyrolysis vapors, or bio-oil | Stabilize and upgrade the oil in a standalone process or treat it appropriately before refinery co-processing. |
| Hydrothermal processing | Wet biomass | Oil produced under elevated pressure and moderate temperature | Catalytically upgrade the oil; this is a distinct approach from the dry-feed gasification and pyrolysis descriptions. |
These are pathway descriptions, not evidence that every configuration has the same maturity or commercial status. The DOE’s pathway material identifies technical barriers and research needs for sugar conversion, while its pilot-plant account describes work intended to help industry de-risk biofuel processes.

How the main conversion steps work
Gasification: biomass to syngas
In gasification, biomass is heated at high temperature with some oxygen. The result is syngas, composed primarily of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Before catalytic synthesis, the gas must be cleaned of contaminants and conditioned to a suitable composition. Those preparation steps matter because the synthesis catalyst needs an appropriate feed stream; raw gasification output is not gasoline.
Methanol-to-gasoline synthesis: the NREL example
One research and process-design concept described by the DOE follows a biomass-to-syngas-to-methanol-to-gasoline sequence. NREL researchers studied a copper-modified beta-zeolite catalyst for converting methanol into high-octane gasoline blendstock. In the DOE’s September 10, 2020 account, that catalyst comparison reported a 38% increase in high-octane gasoline product yield and a 35% reduction in conversion costs relative to the unmodified beta-zeolite benchmark in that pathway.

The same DOE account gave conversion-cost estimates of $0.66–$0.69 per gasoline-gallon equivalent (GGE) for the high-octane-gasoline pathway. These are reported estimates for that modeled process context, not a retail pump price, current market quote or guarantee of plant economics. The figures should not be generalized to other catalysts, feedstocks or biomass-to-fuel routes.

That describes a potential application of the pathway; it does not mean all such plants use biomass feedstock or that the NREL catalyst route is deployed at them.

Sugar upgrading
Sugar-based routes first pretreat biomass and hydrolyze it to release sugars. In one modeled pathway, the sugar-derived streams are purified and concentrated, then processed through aqueous-phase reforming and fractionation to make hydrocarbon fuels. Biological sugar upgrading is another option. The DOE’s Catalytic Upgrading of Sugars to Hydrocarbons pathway document discusses barriers and research needs, so its process descriptions should not be read as proof that every configuration is commercially mature.
Pyrolysis and bio-oil
Pyrolysis heats biomass without oxygen. The resulting vapors can be condensed into bio-oil, which differs from petroleum crude and therefore needs stabilization and upgrading. DOE describes both standalone upgrading and refinery co-feeding after suitable treatment; neither means untreated bio-oil can simply be used as gasoline or fed directly into a refinery without regard to its properties.

Hydrothermal processing for wet feedstocks
Hydrothermal processing decomposes wet biomass under elevated pressure and moderate temperature to produce an oil that may then be upgraded catalytically. It is relevant where a wet feedstock makes a dry-feed route a poor fit, but the available pathway descriptions do not establish a universal feedstock cutoff or prove one process is best for all wet biomass.

When does the output count as gasoline?
The distinction between an intermediate, a blendstock and finished fuel is important. Gasoline-ready status depends on completing the relevant upgrading, separation and finishing steps; a high-octane blendstock is not necessarily a finished retail fuel by itself.

The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center states that renewable gasoline that is chemically identical to petroleum gasoline and meets ASTM D4814 can be used in existing vehicles and infrastructure. That compatibility statement applies to fuel that meets the specification—not to syngas, untreated bio-oil or an unfinished blendstock.
What is established about commercial readiness?
The cited DOE sources explain process routes and a featured NREL research concept, but they do not establish a current inventory of operating commercial plants, plant capacities or current project-level costs. The NREL catalyst improvements and cost estimates are specific to the research and modeled pathway described in the DOE’s 2020 account; they are not evidence that this particular catalyst route is operating commercially. DOE’s general renewable-gasoline overview mentions commercial use of a technology, but that does not establish deployment of the NREL route.
For a proposed project, the practical comparison is not simply “which route makes gasoline?” It is whether the feedstock fits the process, what intermediate the plant can make reliably, what cleanup or pretreatment that stream requires, and whether the final product is a blendstock or specification-compliant fuel. The pathway and its evidence must be assessed on those terms rather than treating all biomass as interchangeable.
