There is no universal number of scroll steps. For one image of the whole page, use your browser automation framework’s full-page screenshot option when it suits the page. If you need separate viewport images, measure the page and viewport at runtime, choose an overlap, and calculate the steps from those measurements.
Choose full-page capture or separate screenshots
Start with the output you need. A full-page screenshot produces one image spanning the page’s scrollable area. Playwright supports this with fullPage: true, and Puppeteer provides a corresponding full-page option. See the Playwright screenshots guide and Puppeteer screenshots guide.

Use separate viewport captures when a very tall image is unsuitable for your downstream workflow, when full-page capture does not behave as required on the target page, or when scrolling is needed to reveal content. Those are practical considerations, not a universal rule about which approach is best.

Do not reuse one fixed count across pages: page height and viewport height vary. Measure both for the current run, select an overlap, then calculate a starting count. If the measured page height includes the viewport, the calculation is:

increment = viewport height × (1 − overlap fraction)
starting steps = ceiling(page height ÷ increment)
For example, with a measured page height of 5,000 pixels, a viewport height of 1,000 pixels, and an illustrative 20% overlap, the increment is 800 pixels and the starting count is 7. The 20% value is an example, not a prescribed standard: choose and validate an overlap for the page layout and your stitching or review needs.

Cover the bottom remainder
Do not assume each movement will be a full increment. After the planned captures, take a final capture aligned to the bottom of the page. This covers any remainder and reduces the risk of missing the end of the page.

Account for content that appears during scrolling
Some pages load images or other content only as you scroll. Scroll through the relevant areas and wait for that content to load before taking the final capture; check the resulting images on the target site. Full-page capture support alone does not establish that every site’s lazy-loaded content will be triggered.
When combining viewport captures, inspect the overlap for missing areas, repeated content, or visible seams. Adjust the overlap or capture procedure if the page layout makes the joins hard to review.
