There is no universal player limit for a racing game party. The maximum depends on the game, platform, and mode: an online race, a private group, local wireless session, LAN match, and same-console multiplayer can all have different caps. Check the specific mode before inviting everyone.
What does a racing game’s player limit actually mean?
A listed maximum may describe everyone in an online mode, not the number of friends who can join a private party or one particular race. It may also count players across multiple consoles, rather than players sharing one console. Look for the game, platform, mode, and whether the figure is per event or across the online session.

- Online participants: The overall number supported by an online mode.
- Race capacity: The maximum number in a specific event or race.
- Local multiplayer: Players sharing one console.
- Local wireless or LAN: Players connecting nearby consoles through separate local connection modes.
These figures are not interchangeable. For example, Nintendo publishes separate counts for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online play, local wireless, and LAN.
How many players can join these racing games?
These official examples illustrate how much the cap can vary. Each number applies only to the named game, platform, and mode.

| Game | Mode and maximum | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Online: up to 12 players; local wireless: up to 8; LAN: up to 12 | Nintendo Support specifies up to two players per console for online and local wireless. A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the online modes discussed. See Nintendo’s multiplayer setup and mode details. |
| Gran Turismo 7 | Local multiplayer: up to 4 players on PS5, or up to 2 on PS4 | Each player needs a controller. This is a local multiplayer count, not an online lobby limit. See the Gran Turismo 7 Online Manual. |
| The Crew Motorfest | Up to 32 online players; Grand Race: up to 28; Demolition Royale: 32 players divided into eight Crews | Ubisoft says these modes unlock after the introduction and at least one Playlist are completed. Console access may require an active online subscription. See Ubisoft Support. |
| Forza Horizon 5 (PS5 listing) | Up to 12 online players | This figure is from the PlayStation 5 listing, which says PS Plus is required. It is not a platform-independent claim. See the PlayStation game page. |
Why can the number change within the same game?
Different modes have different caps
The Crew Motorfest lists up to 32 online players overall, but its Grand Race supports up to 28. Demolition Royale has 32 players split among eight Crews. An overall online count therefore does not automatically tell you how many people can enter a particular event.
Local play is not online play
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports up to 12 online players, up to eight through local wireless, and up to 12 through LAN. The online and wireless limits also allow up to two players per console, so total participants and players on each console are separate considerations.

Platform can affect local capacity
Gran Turismo 7’s local multiplayer limit differs by console: up to four players on PS5 and up to two on PS4. Check the support details for the platform you own rather than assuming one version’s limit applies to another.

- Choose the exact game and platform. Limits can differ between platforms or listings, as the Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Horizon 5 examples show.
- Identify the mode. Confirm whether you want a public online race, a private group, a specific event, local wireless, LAN, or same-console play.
- Check how the number is counted. Find out whether the cap is for one race, a mode’s total online participants, or players per console.
- Check requirements and unlocks. Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online modes discussed. Ubisoft lists completing the introduction and unlocking at least one Playlist before the cited Motorfest modes become available; console access may also require an active online subscription.
- Confirm cross-play rather than assuming it. Ubisoft’s The Crew Motorfest starting guide establishes cross-play for Motorfest. That does not establish cross-play support for other racing games.
What is the best game for a group?
Start with how your group will connect. For one-console play, compare the local multiplayer limit for your platform. For nearby consoles, look specifically for local wireless or LAN support. For online groups, check the maximum for the event you want to play, whether friends can join that mode, and any subscription or progression requirements. A large online participant count alone does not establish the size of a private party.
