Not the documented full Steam desktop client: Valve’s published Linux requirements and package instructions target x86_64/AMD64 systems, not ARM. A Raspberry Pi 3 or newer can run Steam Link, which streams games from a separate computer running Steam. That lets you play through a Pi without installing the full desktop client on it.
Steam desktop client and Steam Link are different
The Steam desktop client runs Steam and games on the computer where it is installed. Valve’s Steam for Linux requirements specify a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel and processor. Valve’s Linux package repository lists amd64 and i386 architectures; its example installation path is for those architectures, not ARM.

Valve’s published documentation does not provide a supported native ARM installation path for the full desktop client. That is a statement about the documented client route—not proof that no experimental ARM64 build exists. Unofficial emulation or experimental builds are separate projects, and the cited official documentation does not establish their support or compatibility.
| What you want to do | What the documented option does |

| Run the full Steam desktop client on ARM Linux | Valve’s published client requirements and package instructions specify x86_64/AMD64 and amd64/i386, not a native ARM installation. |
| Use a Raspberry Pi to play Steam games | Install Steam Link on a supported Pi and stream from a separate computer that runs Steam and the game. |
How Steam Link lets a Raspberry Pi play Steam games
Steam Link makes the Pi a streaming endpoint. The host computer runs Steam and the game, then sends the gameplay to the Pi over the local network. Valve describes its Raspberry Pi app as using the same streaming technology as the Steam Link hardware and supports Raspberry Pi 3 or newer. The Steam apps page lists Raspberry Pi 3, 4, and 5.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
This is not a way to install or run Steam games directly on the Pi. Play quality and whether a particular game is suitable depend on the host computer, the network, and the game; Valve’s cited documentation does not give a Pi-specific performance guarantee.
Install Steam Link on a Raspberry Pi
- Start the computer that will host the games, open Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the Pi and host computer to the same local network.
- On the Pi, open a terminal and run:
sudo apt updatesudo apt install steamlink - Launch Steam Link from the Games menu, or run
steamlinkin a terminal. - Follow the app’s pairing prompts to connect to the host computer, then use a supported controller, keyboard, or mouse.
Valve recommends a wired network connection for the Pi. It says 5 GHz Wi-Fi may work, but does not recommend it for this setup. Wired controllers, DualShock 4, Switch Pro, keyboard, and mouse are among the inputs listed in Valve’s Raspberry Pi Steam Link instructions.

What about other ARM Linux devices?
The same distinction applies: the published Steam desktop client requirements are for x86_64/AMD64, while the Raspberry Pi instructions describe Steam Link on a Pi. The cited Valve sources do not document a general native Steam desktop client installation for ARM Linux devices. They also do not establish that Steam Link is supported on every ARM device, so do not assume the Raspberry Pi app instructions apply to another board or ARM Linux distribution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Linux desktop troubleshooting and supported desktop details, Valve’s Steam Client Troubleshooting on Linux page discusses Ubuntu LTS desktops and notes 32-bit OpenGL drivers as a common issue. Those requirements do not create an ARM installation path.
