There is no evidence-based number that works for every task. How many LLM agents you need depends on the work, the agents’ roles, and how they coordinate. Adding agents can help with a task that genuinely needs parallel effort or complementary skills, but it can also add communication overhead and make it harder to keep a shared plan.
Why there is no universal agent count
A benchmark’s team size describes the tasks and setup that benchmark tested; it is not a general recommendation. A short, self-contained problem and a long-running task with many roles pose different coordination demands. Even within one task, the best setup can depend on how much information each agent can see and how work is divided.

So the useful question is not simply “How many agents?” It is “How many agents does this task need to improve its outcome enough to justify the coordination?” The answer should be judged against a named task and a defined system, not inferred from a team size used elsewhere.
What multi-agent benchmarks actually measure
Task completion is only one way to evaluate a team. Depending on the benchmark, researchers may also assess collaboration quality, whether individual actions contributed to the result, communication costs, and cost effectiveness. These measures matter because a team can finish a task while using inefficient coordination—or communicate extensively without making useful progress.

Coordination design is another variable. MultiAgentBench evaluates star, chain, tree, and graph protocols, as well as approaches such as group discussion and cognitive planning. In the scenarios reported by its 2025 paper, graph coordination performed best among the tested protocols, while cognitive planning improved milestone achievement rates by 3%. Those are findings from that study’s scenarios, not proof that graph structures or cognitive planning are best for every application. Read the MultiAgentBench paper.
What the reported agent counts and scores mean
AgentWorld makes the task-dependence especially clear. Its 2026 paper describes 100 human-annotated tasks and 100 augmented variants in a sandbox, with interactions lasting more than 50 rounds. Tasks in that benchmark require between 3 and 20 agents, with asymmetric roles and abilities. That range is a property of those tasks—not an ideal team-size range for LLM systems generally.

In AgentWorld’s reported experiments, the best tested model achieved 52.0% task success. That figure applies to the paper’s tested models and benchmark conditions; it is not a general estimate of current LLM capability. Other benchmarks focus on different conditions. MASBench, described in an October 2026 paper, studies collaboration under partial observability across reasoning, scheduling, and game tasks. It evaluates protocol, memory, and routing mechanisms using performance, communication-cost, and cost-effectiveness metrics. Its setup reinforces why a result from one task environment cannot settle the agent-count question for another. Read the MASBench paper.

The 2023 LLM-Coordination work evaluates agents in four cooperative games and uses a separate set of 198 multiple-choice questions to assess environment comprehension, theory-of-mind reasoning, and joint planning. Its authors report room for improvement in theory-of-mind reasoning and joint planning among the agents tested. Those results concern that paper’s games and models, rather than multi-agent systems as a whole. Read the LLM-Coordination paper.
How to compare multi-agent approaches
When deciding whether one setup is better than another, compare systems on the same task and under the same conditions. Look beyond raw completion rates:

- Task performance: Identify the benchmark and task behind the result.
- Contribution and collaboration: Check whether the evaluation measures how agent actions contribute to team outcomes or how well agents collaborate.
- Coordination cost: Include communication overhead and cost effectiveness, not just whether the team reaches an answer.
- Coordination method: Note the protocol or mechanism tested, such as star, chain, tree, or graph structures.
- Task conditions: Check whether agents have full or partial observability and whether the work is short- or long-horizon.
A larger team that performs well on one benchmark may not be a better choice elsewhere. A meaningful comparison needs to hold the task and evaluation conditions steady while changing the team configuration or coordination design.

For a lightbulb, the question is a joke; for LLM systems, it points to a real engineering trade-off. Benchmarks show that some tasks are designed for multiple agents and that coordination choices affect measured outcomes. They do not establish a universal number. The practical answer is the smallest team configuration that demonstrably improves the outcome on the task you care about, after accounting for coordination cost.
