Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCount every wired device you plan to connect, then add the switch’s connection to your router or upstream switch. Choose enough ports for that total plus a modest reserve. For speed, gigabit is a good fit when your devices and uplink are gigabit; consider 2.5G or faster only where the devices and the rest of the network can use it. If the switch will power access points, cameras, or phones, check its PoE capabilities separately.
How many Ethernet ports do you need?
Make a list of devices that will connect by cable: computers, TVs, consoles, printers, NAS units, access points, cameras, phones, and other fixed equipment. Add one port for the cable connecting the switch to your router or upstream switch. That connection uses a switch port just like a device does.

- Count the wired devices you expect to connect.
- Add one port for the uplink to the router or upstream switch.
- Compare the total with the candidate switch’s actual RJ45 Ethernet-port count.
- Add a modest reserve for likely additions, such as another computer or access point.
For example, six wired devices plus the uplink require at least seven usable ports; an eight-port switch leaves one available for a later addition. This is an illustration, not a recommended size for every home or office. Choose based on your own inventory rather than a generic household-device estimate.
Check whether a product’s advertised total includes SFP or SFP+ slots. These are separate fiber-oriented uplink slots, not ordinary RJ45 copper ports. Count one only if you intend to use a compatible transceiver and fiber connection. TP-Link’s unmanaged switch catalog shows that switches are sold in different port-count and speed classes.

Is gigabit Ethernet enough, or do you need 2.5G?
Match the switch to the devices and links that need to communicate. A faster switch port does not make a 1 Gb/s network adapter operate faster, and it does not increase the bandwidth of your internet plan. Internet access and transfers between devices on your local network have different constraints.
| Port speed | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Gb/s | Wired devices and the relevant router or uplink are gigabit. | A faster switch will not speed up a gigabit-only endpoint or uplink. |
| 2.5 Gb/s | A connected access point, NAS, workstation, or other endpoint supports multi-gigabit speeds and can use the added capacity. | Confirm that the endpoint and the link to the rest of the network support the speed. TP-Link says its Omada 2.5G ports also work with 1G and 100 Mbps equipment through speed negotiation, and its product-family guidance says Cat5e supports 2.5G. |
| 5 or 10 Gb/s | A specific device or network link needs that capacity. | Check the endpoint, uplink, cabling, and cost together. The existence of these options in a product catalog does not mean every network benefits from them. |
TP-Link describes multi-gig access points, NAS devices, and workstations as uses for its 2.5G switches. Its guidance is available on the Omada 2.5 Gigabit switches page. Specifications and availability can vary by model and region, so verify the particular switch’s product page before buying.

Will the switch need to power devices?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a separate choice from port speed. If the switch will power cameras, phones, or access points, check all of the following against the devices you intend to connect:
- The PoE standard and power draw each device requires.
- How many switch ports provide PoE.
- The maximum power available from each PoE port.
- The switch’s total PoE power budget when several devices are connected.
A switch with enough data ports may still lack the right PoE standard, per-port capacity, or total budget. TP-Link’s switch buying guide also treats device count, connection speed, power needs, installation location, and copper or fiber access as separate selection questions.

Do you need a managed switch?
An unmanaged switch is often sufficient when the goal is simply to add Ethernet ports. Managed models offer controls for more involved networks, but the available features and setup requirements vary by model.
- Consider managed features if you need to separate devices into VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, apply access-control rules, or administer switches through a controller.
- Consider unmanaged if you do not need those controls and want straightforward port expansion.
TP-Link lists VLAN segmentation, QoS, ACL controls, and controller options among features available in its managed product family. Confirm that the specific model includes the controls you need; the features are not universal across switches.

- PLUG AND PLAY SETUP: No configuration required; simply connect the switch to your network devices and it is ready to use immediately, making network expansion quick and hassle-free
- FANLESS QUIET DESIGN: The fanless design ensures silent operation, making this switch suitable for noise-sensitive environments such as home offices, bedrooms, or conference rooms

Where will the switch sit?
For a desk or living area, check desktop form factor and whether the switch is fanless, especially if fan noise would be distracting. For a rack or wiring closet, check rack mounting, power, and the type and speed of uplink you need. Installation location is one of the factors covered in TP-Link’s buying guide.

A compact 2.5G switch example
TP-Link lists the Omada ES206X-M2 as a five-port 2.5GBASE-T easy-managed switch with one 10GE SFP+ slot. It illustrates a compact option with multi-gig copper ports and a separate fiber uplink slot; it is not a default recommendation. Check the current regional listing, exact port layout, management features, and whether you have a use for the SFP+ uplink. A gigabit-only network may not benefit from this model’s extra capacity. See the official Omada 2.5G switch page.

Quick checklist before choosing
- Count wired devices and include the router or upstream-switch connection.
- Confirm the number of RJ45 ports; do not count fiber slots as copper ports unless you will use them.
- Choose a speed supported by the endpoints and uplinks that need it.
- Check PoE standard, powered-port count, per-port capacity, and total budget if devices need power.
- Decide whether VLANs, QoS, access controls, or controller support are genuinely needed.
- Match the form factor and noise level to the installation location.
