If your Ethernet connection is slower than expected, work from the computer outward: repeat a controlled speed test, check the negotiated Ethernet link speed, inspect every cable and port in the path, then compare performance through the router with a direct modem test if your ISP setup allows it. These checks can help locate the bottleneck; a single speed test cannot identify it by itself.
1. Establish a repeatable speed-test baseline
Use one computer connected by Ethernet. Pause downloads, cloud backups, streaming, and other high-bandwidth activity where feasible. Run several tests under similar conditions and record the download and upload results, time, and test server when shown. TP-Link recommends three Speedtest runs for its modem troubleshooting procedure; that is vendor-specific guidance, not a universal measurement standard. TP-Link modem troubleshooting

- Keep the same computer and connection path for each run.
- Compare results with the speed in your internet plan, while accounting for the fact that a test measures a connection to a particular server.
- Do not treat tests run at different times or against different servers as a conclusive comparison. Google notes that server location and network congestion can affect results. Google: Test internet speed and improve your Nest or Google Wifi internet connection
A speed test can show that performance is low, but it does not reveal whether the cause is the computer, cabling, router, modem, ISP service, or congestion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Check Ethernet link speed and the entire path
Look at the connection status on the computer or network adapter and note its negotiated Ethernet link speed. Then check the capabilities of every component between the computer and the router: adapter, cable segments, wall jacks, switches, and router ports. The slowest supported component can limit the path. For example, Google specifies 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports on Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, and recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet speeds above 100 Mbps; those specifications and recommendations apply to the cited Google products and guidance, not every network device. - What you will get: 1 * TLP-123A Network Cable Tester, 1 * user manual, 2 * AAA batteries
- Check that plugs are firmly seated at both ends and that the computer is connected to a router LAN port, not its WAN/Internet port. Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows
- If the link reports 100 Mbps or less when the service and equipment should support more, treat that as a reason to inspect the path—not proof that the cable alone is faulty.
- Try a known-good cable, then remove switches, wall jacks, couplers, or other segments one at a time. Intel recommends testing with a known-good cable connected to a gigabit-capable port to help isolate path issues. Intel Ethernet connection troubleshooting
- Confirm the adapter and every port support the rate you expect. Replacing a cable with Cat 6 will not overcome a 100 Mbps port or a different bottleneck.
3. Compare the router path with a direct modem test
If your ISP’s equipment and service setup permit it, compare the same capable computer and known-good cable connected through the router and directly to the modem. Follow the ISP’s instructions: some services require authentication or a modem restart after changing the connected device, and a direct connection may expose the computer to the internet. TP-Link and NETGEAR describe router-versus-modem testing as a way to help locate a bottleneck. TP-Link modem troubleshooting NETGEAR connected home support
| Test result | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-to-modem and router-path tests are similarly slow | The router is less likely to be the only cause; the modem, ISP service, or conditions affecting the connection may be involved. | Check modem/service status and ask the ISP about provisioning, outages, or a line issue. |
| Direct-to-modem test is materially faster | The router or something between it and the computer may be limiting performance. | Check router settings and ports, plus any switch, wall jack, or cable segment in the router path. |
The ISP controls the initial bandwidth coming into the home, according to Google Home and Nest Help. Google also notes that ISP congestion or service issues can affect the connection. Google: Troubleshoot slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
4. Find out whether one device or the whole network is affected
Test another wired device using the same cable and port, then try the suspect computer on a known-good cable and port. Changing one element at a time makes the results easier to interpret.
- Only one computer is slow: Inspect its Ethernet adapter, driver or configuration, background activity, and any USB-to-Ethernet adapter in use. Microsoft lists USB-to-Ethernet adapters among possible sources of Ethernet connection problems. Microsoft: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows
- Several wired devices are slow: Prioritize shared components such as the router, modem, switches, and service connection. More than one slow device does not by itself prove the ISP is at fault.
- Wired is slower than Wi-Fi: Compare results from the same device, at similar times, and against the same test server when possible. Check the Ethernet link and wired path rather than assuming the Wi-Fi result identifies which connection is performing correctly.
5. Restart equipment, retest, and contact support with evidence
Restart the modem and router according to their support instructions, then repeat the same test conditions. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance is to unplug the router and modem, wait about 30 seconds, restore the modem first, and then the router; instructions for your specific equipment take precedence. If the problem persists, give your ISP or equipment vendor information that helps distinguish a repeatable issue from a one-off result:
- Your plan’s stated download and upload rates.
- Several speed-test results, with the time and server if available.
- The computer’s negotiated Ethernet link speed.
- Modem, router, switch, and adapter models.
- Whether other wired devices are affected and whether a direct-modem test changed the result.
TP-Link’s modem troubleshooting procedure specifically asks users seeking support to provide test screenshots and link-speed information. TP-Link modem troubleshooting
