If an app is compromised, the sandbox is designed to restrict what an attacker can do through that app—but it does not prevent the app itself from having vulnerabilities or make it automatically safe.
What App Sandbox does
App Sandbox is an access-control technology provided and enforced by macOS. A sandboxed app must declare the kinds of restricted resources it needs; macOS checks those permissions when the app tries to use them. If the app lacks the required authorization, the operating system can deny the attempt.

The practical value is containment. A flaw or compromise in an app does not automatically give an attacker unrestricted access to everything the Mac can reach. The sandbox narrows the app’s authority, helping limit damage to the system and the user’s data.
What an app can access
The app’s container
A sandboxed app ordinarily has read and write access to its own private container, which macOS creates under ~/Library/Containers. The app can use this area for its working files and data without receiving the same access to every other file on the Mac.

Files and resources beyond the container
Access outside the container depends on the app’s declared capabilities, the way access is requested, user choices, and other macOS protections. An app may work with a document that the user selects, or it may request access to certain categories of resources through entitlements. Network connections and hardware capabilities are also examples of access that may require appropriate entitlements.
An entitlement communicates that an app requests a capability; it does not by itself override a separate macOS permission prompt or grant every file access. POSIX permissions, access control lists, and System Integrity Protection can also affect whether a particular operation succeeds.

Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is a user-controlled permission for apps that need broad access to protected data. An app cannot grant this permission to itself through its code or entitlements. The person using the Mac must approve it in System Settings > Privacy & Security. That grant does not erase every other macOS access control: an individual file operation can still be subject to additional protections.
What App Sandbox does not guarantee
- It is not a vulnerability blocker. Apple’s developer guidance says the sandbox does not prevent attacks against an app. It is intended to limit the scope of harm if the app is compromised.
- It is not proof that an app is trustworthy. App Sandbox is required for Mac App Store distribution, but meeting that requirement does not establish that an app has no security flaws.
- It does not replace careful handling of secrets. Apple advises against storing passwords or other sensitive content in plain-text files and recommends the encrypted Keychain for secure information. That is complementary guidance, not a protection supplied by App Sandbox itself.
Apple also describes System Integrity Protection as helping prevent potentially malicious software from modifying protected files and folders in app containers. Beginning with macOS 15, app group containers also receive this protection for local files in specified configurations, including some apps that are not sandboxed. This version-specific container protection should not be confused with App Sandbox itself.

How to check whether an app is sandboxed
Check in Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Choose View > Columns > Sandbox.
- Find the running app and read the Sandbox column. Yes indicates that the process is sandboxed.
Inspect its code-signing entitlements in Terminal
- Open Terminal.
- Run Apple’s documented command, replacing the placeholder with the path to the app:
codesign -dvvv --entitlements - <path to your app>. - Look for
com.apple.security.app-sandboxwith the Boolean valuetrue.
These checks indicate sandbox status or show a code-signing entitlement; they are not a complete security audit and do not establish that the app is free of vulnerabilities.
