Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA lost Super Nintendo game is not recovered by simply finding an old cartridge and copying it. Preservation is a chain of evidence: locating a prototype or developer archive, imaging it without damage, reconstructing files when storage has deteriorated, verifying the result against other evidence, documenting exactly what was found, and securing permission for any public release. The outcome may be a research dump, an incomplete but playable reconstruction, a licensed rerelease, or a documentary package that places the software beside its design documents and development history.
What “lost” means in video-game preservation
“Lost” can describe several different situations. A game may have been announced but canceled before manufacturing, completed internally but never sold, or preserved only in a private prototype that no one outside the development team has seen. It may also survive in fragments: source code on one disk, graphics on another, and build tools in a backup format that modern computers cannot read.

That is why a recovered game must be described by its status rather than simply called “the game.” A cartridge can contain an early prototype, a late beta, a review build, or something close to a final master. The build date, regional target, missing assets and known differences all affect what the artifact proves.

- Prototype cartridges: Development or test cartridges can preserve a runnable ROM image, but their labels, shells and component markings are also evidence of when and how the build was made.
- Development disks and tapes: Floppy disks, optical discs, data tape and hard-drive backups may hold source code, graphics, tools, documentation or several generations of a build.
- EPROMs and loose components: Erasable programmable read-only memory chips can contain code or graphics that must be read with suitable hardware before the data can be assembled.
- Personal archives: A programmer’s or designer’s collection can supply the missing context: notes, design documents, build scripts, correspondence and permission from the rights holder or family.
Why provenance matters
Provenance is the documented history of an artifact: who held it, where it came from, when it was dumped and what steps were taken. It allows researchers to distinguish an authentic development build from an altered copy and to explain why two versions differ. A dated label, a developer’s archive inventory or a second matching dump can be more valuable than a dramatic claim that a cartridge is “the lost game.”

The preservation workflow, from hardware to verified software
The workflow differs between a cartridge and a developer archive, but the principle is the same: preserve the original evidence first, then make interpretations from copies.
- Secure and document the artifact. Photograph labels, shells, boards, disks and storage containers. Record ownership, acquisition history, visible dates and any regional or platform markings before cleaning or opening anything.
- Choose a non-destructive imaging method. A cartridge is read with hardware that extracts its ROM data without rewriting the chips. Disks and tapes are imaged sector by sector where possible, preserving unreadable areas and error information instead of silently replacing them with guesses.
- Preserve the raw image. Keep an untouched master dump and calculate identifying checksums. Work only on copies so that later reconstruction never changes the original evidence.
- Reconstruct proprietary formats. Old backup programs may not produce ordinary files. In the Days of Thunder recovery, investigators used real hardware to recover four hard-drive partitions from proprietary PC Tools backups before rebuilding the contents into usable development data.
- Inventory and cross-check files. Separate source code, binaries, graphics, audio, tools and documentation. Compare duplicate media sets and look for matching file names, timestamps, build scripts or repeated data that can expose corruption.
- Rebuild the executable when necessary. A playable result may require the original compiler, a recovered build tool or a carefully documented replacement. Every substituted or reconstructed component should be labeled, rather than presented as untouched original code.
- Test against the evidence. Check that the reconstructed program boots, that assets appear in the expected locations and that independent dumps agree where they should. A byte-for-byte match between two prototype dumps is strong evidence that the image was copied accurately.
- Publish documentation with the software. Record the artifact’s origin, build date, dump method, missing pieces, known differences and rights status. Future researchers should be able to reproduce the reasoning without guessing which files were changed.
Four recoveries that show what the process can reveal
| Case | Platform or material | What survived | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| SimCity prototype | NES cartridge; the project was announced alongside the SNES version | Two cartridges surfaced in 2017; one label carried a December 20, 1990 build date, and the dumps matched byte-for-byte | Physical authentication and comparison can turn a long-missing cartridge into reliable evidence |
| Star Fox 2 | SNES software using Super FX 2 hardware and extra memory | Nintendo said the game was complete in 1995; it was later included in Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System | A finished game can be canceled for business and hardware reasons, not because it was technically broken |
| Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle | SNES prototype, assets and documents | A playable build held by programmer Jim Grundell for more than 25 years | Playable does not mean content-complete or representative of a planned final release |
| Days of Thunder reconstruction | Developer archive containing 5.25-inch disks, CD-Rs, EPROMs, data tape and hard-drive backups | Four recovered partitions, six rebuilt binaries and a separate 128KB graphics binary that completed the playable reconstruction | Software recovery may depend on combining several media sets and rebuilding the development environment |
SimCity: a cartridge becomes a chain of evidence
The NES version of SimCity was intended for the United States and appeared briefly at the January 1991 Winter Consumer Electronics Show. It was then canceled and disappeared from public view until prototype cartridges emerged in 2017, 26 years after that showing. The Video Game History Foundation digitized one cartridge and compared it with the other. The identical dumps, together with the dated label, support a specific conclusion: these are matching development artifacts, not merely similar memories of an unreleased project. This is an NES example, not an SNES release, but the cartridge-preservation principles transfer directly.
Star Fox 2: completion did not guarantee a launch
Nintendo developers said Star Fox 2 was complete in 1995. The cancellation was tied to the cost of the Super FX 2 processor and additional cartridge memory at the moment Nintendo 64 was arriving. Shigeru Miyamoto explained: “The price was high and the timing of the release was awkward, so we decided to cancel it and start from scratch with a new Star Fox game for Nintendo 64.” Its later inclusion in Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System shows how a title can move from an internal final build to an official commercial release when the platform holder changes its plans.

Tarzan: a working prototype can still be incomplete
Nintendo Life reported in 2019 that a playable SNES prototype of Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle, along with assets and documents, had surfaced after more than 25 years. Programmer Jim Grundell described it as playable and free of known bugs, but remembered only two or three distinct levels and a few cutscenes. He was unsure whether the design was complete. The case warns against treating “it runs” as proof that all planned content, balancing, menus or story sequences survived.
Days of Thunder: the missing piece may be on another medium
The Days of Thunder reconstruction illustrates why an archive can be more important than a single disk. In 2020, the Video Game History Foundation received Chris Oberth’s family archive. Investigators had to recover four hard-drive partitions from proprietary PC Tools backups using original-era hardware, then rebuild six binaries. A 128KB graphics binary found in another disk set supplied the data needed to complete the playable reconstruction. With permission from the family, the Foundation released source code, build tools and binaries. The result was not a simple ROM dump; it was a documented reconstruction assembled from interdependent evidence.
Why canceled SNES games can reappear decades later
Hardware economics and platform timing
Star Fox 2 demonstrates that cancellation can follow technical success. Special chips and larger memory increase manufacturing cost, and a publisher may decide that a game arriving near a new console launch cannot earn back that cost. The decision says more about timing and business strategy than about whether the software worked.

Private collections eventually become accessible
Developers often retain test cartridges, disks or backup media after a project ends. An archive may remain unknown until an estate is organized, a former employee contacts a preservation group, or a rights holder agrees to make the material public. The long gap is therefore often a custody problem, not proof that every copy was destroyed.

Even when media survive, the equipment and software needed to read them may not. Proprietary backup structures, aging magnetic media and undocumented build tools can make a data set effectively inaccessible. Recovery teams may need original drives, period operating systems and custom parsers before they can determine whether a file is useful.
What a recovered game can become
| Release endpoint | What the reader receives | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preservation dump | An archival image with technical notes and provenance | Researchers who need the closest available record of the artifact | It may require specialized hardware or emulation and may not be legally distributable to everyone |
| Playable reconstruction | A runnable build assembled from original and, where necessary, reconstructed components | Understanding how the project played | Missing graphics, levels, audio or tools must be identified explicitly |
| Licensed commercial rerelease | An authorized product distributed by the rights holder or its licensee | General audiences seeking a supported way to play | Availability depends on rights, territory, platform and the terms of the release |
| Interactive documentary | Playable prototypes surrounded by documents, video, commentary and preservation notes | Readers who want development context as well as software | The presentation may include reconstructed or newly created material alongside originals |
The Making of Karateka demonstrates the documentary model. Its official description combines archival design documents, playable prototypes, video features, commentary, save-anywhere and rewind tools, and new games based on an unpublished prototype. Such features can make fragile historical material understandable without pretending that every included build is a finished commercial game.

How to judge the credibility of a recovered release
Use the following questions before treating a download, video or rerelease as definitive:
| Question | What a strong answer includes |
|---|---|
| How complete is it? | A clear label such as prototype, beta, near-final or finished build, plus a list of missing or uncertain content |
| Where did it come from? | The previous owner, archive or developer connection, acquisition history and images of the original media |
| How faithful is the software? | Whether the release is an original dump, a rebuild from source, or a reconstruction with substituted files |
| Who authorized publication? | Rights-holder, estate or family permission, and any geographic or platform restrictions |
| What regions and platforms are supported? | The intended region, console or emulator requirements, and whether the release is official or private |
| What context is supplied? | Manuals, interviews, source documentation, build notes and explanations of design changes |
If you discover an old SNES cartridge or disk
- Do not clean, power or modify it impulsively. Photograph its condition and record every label, screw, connector and storage case.
- Establish custody. Ask how the artifact was obtained and whether the owner has documentation linking it to a developer, publisher or test program.
- Use an experienced preservation specialist. The correct reader depends on the cartridge board or storage format; an unsuitable device can damage media or produce an incomplete image.
- Request a raw dump and verification data. Keep the first image unchanged, save checksums and document the hardware and software used.
- Separate observation from interpretation. A date on a label, a booting menu and a missing level are observations; calling the build “final” requires additional evidence.
- Locate complementary media. Search for manuals, source disks, graphics, sound data and build tools before concluding that content is absent.
- Resolve rights before publication. Finding an artifact does not transfer copyright or grant permission to distribute its code, graphics or music.
- Publish the record even if the game cannot be released. Photographs, provenance, checksums and a technical description can preserve knowledge without distributing unauthorized software.
Common mistakes and how preservationists avoid them
Calling every ROM a finished game
Prototype labels, incomplete level sets and placeholder assets are normal in development material. Use the build’s own evidence and the developer’s testimony to describe its scope.
Ignoring the storage system
A readable file listing does not prove that a proprietary backup was restored correctly. Recovery should preserve bad sectors, compare duplicate media and explain any reconstructed partitions or binaries.
Best Value
Publishing without permission
Copyright can remain with a publisher, developer, estate or another rights holder decades after cancellation. A technically authentic dump may still be unlawful to distribute. Official releases and privately leaked files must be labeled separately.
Removing historical context
A bare executable cannot explain why a project stopped, which features were planned or which parts were rebuilt. Documents, interviews and build notes let audiences understand the artifact without confusing it with a retail product.
The practical takeaway
Lost SNES games return when physical evidence, obsolete software and human permission are brought together. The most trustworthy preservation identifies exactly what survived, verifies the image or reconstruction, distinguishes original code from repairs, and states who authorized publication. Sometimes that process yields an official game decades late; sometimes it yields only a carefully documented prototype. Both outcomes preserve history, provided the release does not claim more completeness or legal status than the evidence supports.
