How Long Will the Samsung Galaxy S23 Get Android and Security Updates?

The Galaxy S23 is expected to receive Android 17 as its final major upgrade, with five years of security updates pointing to roughly February 2028. Exact patch timing varies by model, market, and carrier.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series is promised four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Since the phones launched with Android 13, Android 17 is the expected final major Android version. The five-year security commitment points to approximately February 2028, but Samsung has not named one exact final-patch date for every model, country, and carrier. As of October 13, 2026, Samsung still lists the S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra in its monthly security-update scope.

For a practical keep-or-replace decision, the key distinction is that major Android upgrades are expected to end before security updates. A phone may therefore stop receiving new Android versions while continuing to receive security patches. The exact patch timing for an individual S23 depends on its model, market, and service provider.

Two kinds of updates, with different end points

“Android updates” can mean either a major operating-system upgrade or a security patch. Samsung’s commitment covers both, but for different lengths of time: the S23 series is eligible for four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. That means the major-version upgrades are expected to finish before the security-support period does.

Support type What Samsung promised What that means for the S23
Android OS upgrades Four generations, under Samsung’s February 2023 S23-series announcement Launched on Android 13, so Android 17 is the expected final major version
Security updates Five years, under the same model-specific announcement An approximate support horizon of February 2028, based on the series’ February 17, 2023 availability date; not a guaranteed last-patch date for each variant

A major Android upgrade changes the operating-system version. A security update addresses security fixes and other firmware changes while the phone remains on a supported version. So an S23 can stop receiving new major Android versions and still receive security patches afterward.

These are separate commitments, not a promise of five major Android upgrades or of monthly patches landing on the same day for everyone. Samsung’s model-specific announcement sets the duration; its current security scope and update history give a view of cadence and individual releases. The distinction matters if you are comparing a phone’s Android version with its security patch level: they answer different questions about what has been updated.

Will the Galaxy S23 get Android 17?

Android 17 is the expected last major Android upgrade for the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra under Samsung’s four-generation commitment. The series launched with Android 13; counting four generations from that starting version gives Android 14, Android 15, Android 16, and Android 17. Samsung Knox’s compatibility information also lists Android 17 as the OS ceiling for the S23 Ultra. That Knox entry corroborates the Ultra’s expected ceiling, while Samsung’s S23-series announcement is the source for the series-wide upgrade commitment.

“Expected” matters: Samsung’s policy establishes the number of upgrade generations, but the timing and availability of updates can vary by model and market. The available policy information does not establish a single rollout date for Android 17 across all S23 devices. A phone’s actual update screen and Samsung’s update history for its specific model are better indicators of what has reached that device.

Four generations is counted from the Android version the series launched with, rather than from the year you bought a particular handset. Buying an S23 later does not reset the support clock or add generations to the commitment. Conversely, the expected Android 17 ceiling does not by itself tell you when the last security patch will arrive: the five-year security commitment extends beyond the four-generation OS-upgrade count.

Samsung’s February 2022 announcement describes a broader policy of up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for selected devices. For the S23, the February 2023 S23-series announcement is the directly applicable statement of its four-generation and five-year commitment.

When will Galaxy S23 security updates stop?

Samsung announced that the S23 series would be available starting February 17, 2023, and promised five years of security updates. Five years from that availability date points to roughly February 2028 as the policy horizon. Treat that as an estimate, not as a calendar-day guarantee: Samsung’s announcement does not specify one final patch date that applies to every regional model, carrier variant, or service version.

Samsung Knox lists January 2028 as the security maintenance guarantee for the S23 Ultra. That is a model-specific Knox listing, not proof that every S23 variant has the same last-update date. Read it alongside Samsung’s S23-series five-year commitment rather than treating either month as a universal final-patch date. The difference between the approximate series-level horizon and the Ultra’s Knox entry is another reason not to promise a specific final patch day for every phone.

Samsung’s current security-scope page places the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra in its monthly security-update category. This indicates the models are currently listed for monthly updates, but it does not mean each handset receives every patch on the same day. Samsung says update timing can vary according to device version, model, or service version, and some carriers may support a different cadence for applicable models. Monthly scope describes the category, not a guaranteed arrival date for a particular phone.

Samsung describes monthly, quarterly, and biannual firmware update cadences for selected devices. The current listing places these three S23 models in the monthly category, but Samsung cautions that timing can vary and that some carriers may use a different cadence where applicable. A monthly category is therefore not a promise that an update will arrive on a particular date, or that a delay on one device means the model has been removed from support.

What Samsung’s update record shows as of October 13, 2026

Samsung’s update-history entry for the international Galaxy S23 model SM-S911B provides a dated example: it listed Android 16, a security patch level of September 5, 2026, and a release date of September 28, 2026. This is evidence for that model and record on those dates—not a statement that every S23 worldwide was on Android 16 or had the same patch level by October 13.

Samsung notes that the exact changes in an update can differ by model, country, and service provider. A carrier-branded phone or a device sold in another market may therefore have a different release date or update record even when it belongs to the same S23 family. The September example is useful because it shows how to read a record: the patch level date and the release date are two separate dates. It does not establish a universal rollout schedule.

How to check your own S23’s version and patch level

  1. Check the installed Android version and security patch. Open Settings, select About phone, then Software information. Read the Android version and Android security patch level shown on the phone. These fields indicate the installed major version and the date of the security patch level, respectively.
  2. Check for an available update. In Settings, open Software update and select Download and install. If an update is available for that device at that time, follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Identify the exact variant. In Settings → About phone, note the model number. The country where the phone is used and its carrier can also affect which update record applies.
  4. Compare like with like. Use Samsung’s update history for the matching model and region where available. A record for SM-S911B, for example, should not be treated as the status of every S23 model or carrier version.

If the phone says it is up to date but a newer patch appears in an update record for another variant, that alone does not mean the phone is broken or unsupported. The record may belong to a different model, market, or service provider, or the rollout may not yet have reached the device. Recheck the update screen later and compare the exact model and patch level rather than relying only on a family-wide headline.

When checking status, keep three details together: the phone’s model number, the security patch level displayed on the device, and the country or carrier context that matches the update record. A headline about the S23 family—or a record for a different regional model—cannot reliably establish what has reached a specific handset. Samsung itself cautions that exact update changes can differ by model, country, and service provider.

What the support timeline means for keeping or replacing the phone

The update commitment gives the S23 a defined software-support window, but it does not determine whether an individual phone is worth keeping. If the device still meets your needs, the useful distinction is that the expected Android-version ceiling arrives before the approximate security-support horizon. Someone who values having the newest Android version should plan around Android 17 as the expected final major upgrade; someone whose main concern is security should consider the longer, approximate five-year period and verify the patch level on the particular handset.

After the policy horizon, the information here does not establish that all updates immediately stop on one date, nor does it establish that every device will receive updates until the same day. It does mean you should not treat the five-year promise as a guarantee of indefinite patches. For a decision involving sensitive accounts or work data, check the phone’s patch level and Samsung’s current listing for its exact model and service variant instead of assuming the monthly category guarantees a specific future cadence.

The support window can help frame a purchase or replacement decision, but it is not a condition report for the phone itself. It does not say whether a particular used S23 is in good condition, nor does it guarantee that every software release arrives at the same time across markets. For someone already using an S23, the practical questions are whether the phone is receiving updates for its specific variant and whether the remaining major-version and security-support timeline meets their needs.

Samsung described the S23 experience as supportable “through the years with four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates” in its February 2023 launch announcement. Its later update records and current security-scope listing help show how that policy is being applied, but rollout timing remains device-specific.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Galaxy S23 get Android 17?

Android 17 is the expected final major Android version for the S23 series. Samsung promised four generations of Android OS upgrades, and the phones launched with Android 13: Android 14, 15, 16, and 17 make four generations. Samsung Knox also lists Android 17 as the OS ceiling for the S23 Ultra.

Is the Galaxy S23 still getting monthly security updates?

Samsung’s current security-scope listing includes the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra in its monthly category. That is the stated cadence category, not a guarantee that every device receives a patch on the same day. Timing may vary by model, device version, service version, and carrier.

Why does my S23 show a different update than Samsung’s update history?

The update record may be for a different model number, country, or service provider, or the rollout may not yet have reached your device. Check Settings → About phone → Software information for the installed Android version and security patch level, then compare the model and region with the matching Samsung update-history entry.

Does the five-year security promise mean five years of Android version upgrades?

No. Samsung’s S23 commitment is four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The OS-upgrade count and security-support period are distinct; security patches can continue after the phone receives its expected final major Android version.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Samsung promised the Galaxy S23 series four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Because it launched with Android 13, Android 17 is the expected final major version. The security commitment points to about February 2028, but Samsung has not named one final patch date for every S23 variant. Check your phone’s model number and patch level, and compare them with Samsung’s matching update record.
