Dyson says its battery life is not defined by a set number of years, and LG says it recommends no fixed replacement period for the CordZero A9 because usage and environment vary. Replace a battery when runtime remains substantially reduced in a normal power mode after you have checked maintenance issues and model-specific warnings—not simply because the vacuum has reached a certain age.
Why there is no single battery-life answer
“How long will it last?” can mean two different things: how many years the battery remains usable, or how long the vacuum runs on one charge. Neither has a single answer that applies to every cordless vacuum. The manufacturer, model, how often the machine is used, the selected power mode, and storage and operating conditions all matter.

Dyson puts the calendar-age issue plainly: “It’s not defined by a set number of years.” LG’s guidance for the CordZero A9 likewise says, “Battery life depends on the environment of use and since each customer has their own way of using and cleaning with the vacuum cleaner, there is no specific replacement period recommended.” That advice is about the A9, but it illustrates why a universal replacement schedule is misleading. Dyson’s battery-care guidance and LG’s CordZero A9 guidance focus on the individual machine and its use rather than a blanket age limit.
A general lithium-ion estimate can provide context, but not a vacuum-specific promise: DEWALT says its lithium-ion batteries typically last two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever comes first. That estimate is for DEWALT batteries generally, not a tested lifespan claim for cordless vacuums. Treat the vacuum maker’s guidance for your exact model as more relevant.

What battery-life figures actually measure
Manufacturers may describe battery life in years, charge-discharge cycles, remaining capacity, or a practical sign such as reduced runtime. These measures are not interchangeable. A cycle count is not the same as a fixed number of years: the time it takes to accumulate cycles depends on how the vacuum is used and charged. Nor does a stated capacity milestone necessarily mean that every owner must replace the battery at that point.
| Manufacturer guidance | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| LG CordZero A9, LG USA, 2025 | After 500 full charge-discharge cycles, the battery gradually reaches 80% of its initial life. | This is a model-specific performance figure, not a replacement deadline for all cordless vacuums. LG also says use and environment vary and gives no specific A9 replacement period. LG source. |
| LG CordZero A7, LG USA, 2026 | A red battery LED indicates the battery has reached the end of its lifespan after more than 650 charging cycles. LG defines a cycle as going from fully charged to fully discharged. | This warning and count apply to the A7. Do not assume another model uses the same light or threshold. LG source. |
| DEWALT lithium-ion batteries, 2024 | Two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever comes first. | A broad estimate for DEWALT lithium-ion batteries, not cordless-vacuum-specific evidence. It should not be used as a universal vacuum replacement interval. DEWALT source. |
The LG examples are useful precisely because their scope is narrow. The A9 figure describes a gradual change in initial battery life; the A7 light is a model-specific end-of-life indication. Neither establishes an industry-wide cycle standard. The available manufacturer guidance does not amount to a controlled cross-brand durability comparison, so it cannot support a claim that one brand’s battery generally lasts longer than another’s.

Signs that a battery may need replacement
The most useful everyday clue is a sustained runtime loss while using a normal power setting. Dyson identifies reduced runtime when the machine is not in Max mode as a typical replacement sign. Its FAQ says, “So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery.” A brief run in Max or Boost is not a fair comparison with the vacuum’s normal mode: those settings are intended for intensive bursts and draw power more quickly.
- Runtime is consistently shorter in Auto or Normal mode. Compare similar cleaning sessions and settings rather than relying on a single run.
- The vacuum gives a model-specific battery warning. For example, the LG CordZero A7 uses a red battery LED to indicate end of lifespan under the conditions LG describes. Other models may use different indicators—or none.
- Charging and use remain abnormal after maintenance checks. A battery is one possible cause, but dirt, blockages, or filter issues can affect operation. Follow the manual’s troubleshooting steps before buying a replacement.
Do not use age alone, a cycle number from another model, or a warning light described for a different vacuum as a diagnosis. The distinction matters: a weak battery can cause shorter use per charge, while an airflow or maintenance problem may reduce cleaning performance without proving the battery has reached end of life.

How to decide whether to replace it
- Establish a fair runtime comparison. Fully charge the vacuum as its manual directs, then use it in the normal mode you ordinarily choose—such as Auto or Normal—rather than Max or Boost. Note how long it runs during a comparable cleaning task. If you have an older runtime figure, compare like with like: same mode and broadly similar use.
- Check the machine before blaming the battery. Inspect and clean filters, check for blockages, and complete other maintenance described in the model’s manual. Dyson’s support guidance notes that filters and blockages can affect operation. Retest after addressing any issue rather than treating poor airflow or a dirty filter as proof of battery failure. See Dyson’s care and troubleshooting guidance and your own model’s instructions.
- Read the exact model’s indicator guidance. Check the manual or manufacturer support page for the meaning of any battery light or message. The LG A7 red LED has a specific meaning for that model; it is not a universal cordless-vacuum code. If there is no warning, judge the battery by persistent runtime loss and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
- Check warranty coverage before paying. Dyson’s current US battery-care page says its two-year cordless machine and parts warranty includes the battery. This is a US statement, not a guarantee for every Dyson owner: coverage depends on the model, market, purchase circumstances, and applicable warranty terms. Check the warranty that applies to your own vacuum.
- Confirm the replacement fits your exact model. Locate the model number on the vacuum and use the manufacturer’s parts or service guidance to identify the compatible battery. Do not assume batteries are interchangeable across a brand’s product line or that a generic battery will fit. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the part listing does not clearly name your model.
- Follow the specified replacement and disposal instructions. Use the maker’s procedure for removal and installation, or arrange service if the battery is not intended to be user-replaced. Dyson says to remove the battery before disposal and recycle it under local ordinances or regulations; local requirements and collection options vary.
Why runtime can fall sooner than expected
Repeated high-power use can shorten battery life. Dyson recommends everyday cleaning in Auto or Normal mode and reserving Max or Boost for intensive bursts; it says frequent high-power use speeds degradation. This is Dyson’s guidance, so use the operating recommendations in your own vacuum’s manual where they differ.
Storage and operating conditions also matter. Dyson recommends storing its vacuum away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and gives 18°C–28°C as its recommended storage temperature. That range is Dyson guidance, not a universal specification for every vacuum. Dyson also advises letting the machine cool after use before reconnecting it to charge. These practices can help you follow the manufacturer’s care instructions, but they cannot restore capacity already lost through battery aging.

Dyson’s care page further advises allowing the battery to run down to empty at least once a month. Charging recommendations may vary with battery chemistry and model; follow your own manual rather than applying this instruction to a different vacuum by default.
Finding the right replacement battery
Replacement is a model-matching task, not a matter of buying any battery that looks similar. Start with the vacuum’s complete model identifier, then check the manufacturer’s parts page or support instructions. Confirm that the replacement listing names the exact model or series and that the replacement method is appropriate for your machine.
Best Value
For examples of the model-specific approach, Dyson has a replacement battery page for the V7, while Philips India lists battery part numbers for selected cordless series. Those listings do not establish fit for other Dyson or Philips models, for other brands, or for every regional version. Check the manufacturer’s current listing for your machine before ordering. Dyson V7 replacement battery information; Philips India battery and runtime support.
If the manufacturer does not clearly identify a compatible part or user replacement procedure, contact its support service rather than guessing from appearance or voltage alone. A correct-looking battery is not evidence of compatibility. For a vacuum covered by warranty, resolve coverage and service options before opening the machine or purchasing parts.
Care habits that can help preserve usable runtime
Good battery care means avoiding unnecessary stress while still following the instructions for the particular model. Dyson’s recommendations include using Auto or Normal for routine work, limiting Max or Boost to intensive bursts, keeping the vacuum away from direct sun and heat sources, and letting it cool before charging. It specifies 18°C–28°C for storage on its guidance page. These are manufacturer recommendations, not proven guarantees of a particular added number of months or cycles.

Keep up with filter and blockage maintenance as well. That will not reverse battery wear, but it helps prevent a maintenance problem from being mistaken for a failing battery and helps the machine operate as intended. Where instructions differ—for charging, storage, or cleaning—the manual for the exact vacuum takes priority over advice for another model.
What to do with the old battery
Do not put a removed rechargeable battery into ordinary rubbish unless local rules explicitly allow it. Follow the vacuum maker’s removal instructions and your local battery collection or recycling requirements. Dyson’s care guidance says to remove the battery before disposal and recycle it in accordance with local ordinances or regulations. Requirements and drop-off arrangements differ by location, so check local guidance rather than assuming one disposal route applies everywhere.
