There is no single guaranteed number of years that every iPhone receives iOS updates. Support depends on the model, and a phone that can no longer install the newest major iOS may still receive updates for an older iOS version. Check your model and the updates Apple offers it rather than relying on a general year estimate.

What iPhones can install the latest iOS?

Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide, checked October 7, 2026, lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). This is the current major-version compatibility cutoff, not a forecast of when each listed model will stop receiving security fixes. Apple may change compatibility with future releases. See Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide for the current list.

Major iOS upgrades, older-version updates, and security fixes

These are related but different kinds of support:

  • Major iOS upgrades add a new main version. A model missing from the current compatibility list cannot install that major version.
  • Updates to an older iOS branch can still arrive after a newer major version launches. Apple’s release archive lists iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, released August 17, 2026, after iOS 27 became available. That dated example shows older-branch updates can happen; it does not promise future releases for those or other models.
  • Security updates address security issues and may be provided for older devices or software branches. Apple recommends installing the latest iOS available for your device for the strongest security protections.

Apple’s release archive records iOS 27 and iOS 26.7 releases dated September 14, 2026, alongside releases for older branches. Check Apple’s security release archive for updates and supported devices. The archive is a record of released updates, not a guarantee that a particular iPhone will receive every future fix.

How to check whether your iPhone still gets updates

  1. Identify the model: Open Settings > General > About and check the model name.
  2. Check available software: Open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says this screen shows updates compatible with your device.
  3. Compare with the major-version list: If you want to know whether the phone can install iOS 27, compare its model with Apple’s compatibility guide.
  4. Look for older-branch releases: Consult the security release archive for updates to the iOS version your iPhone runs, and install an update offered in Software Update.

Should you keep or replace an older iPhone?

Base the decision on what the phone actually supports, not just whether it can install the newest major iOS. Consider whether it receives updates for its installed branch, whether its software supports the apps and features you need, and whether its physical condition is acceptable. A missing major iOS upgrade by itself does not establish that security updates have ended. Apple’s guidance on updating for protection is available in Update iOS to protect your iPhone from web attacks.
