1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your glasses feel blurry or uncomfortable while using a computer, the cause may be screen-related dryness and visual fatigue, or lenses that are not suited to your screen distance. Try adjusting your setup and taking visual breaks; if blur persists, arrange an eye exam rather than assuming a screen filter will solve it.
Why glasses can feel uncomfortable at a screen
Less blinking can dry the eye surface
People tend to blink less during screen use. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports about 15 blinks per minute normally, compared with about 5 to 7 per minute while using computers and other digital screens. Less frequent blinking can leave the eye surface less moist, contributing to dryness, stinging, tearing, aching, or temporary blur. These symptoms can occur after prolonged close work, but they do not prove that screen use is the only cause.

Your prescription may not suit the viewing distance
Computer screens are usually viewed at an intermediate distance. The AAO describes prescription computer glasses for roughly 20–26 inches from the face. Ordinary distance glasses or multifocal lenses may not give every person a comfortable, clear zone at their particular desk setup.

The National Eye Institute explains that refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina. If you wear glasses or contact lenses and still have vision symptoms, you may need a new prescription and an eye exam.

What to try first
- Set a comfortable screen distance and height. The AAO suggests sitting about 25 inches—roughly arm’s length—from a computer screen, with your gaze slightly downward. If your usual working distance differs, or you switch among several distances, make a note of that for your eye-care professional.
- Match the display to the room. Adjust screen brightness to the surrounding light and try increasing contrast. Move or shade light sources that reflect on the screen. If reflections remain a specific problem, a compatible matte screen filter is an optional glare-reduction aid; it will not correct a prescription or treat dry eye.
- Blink fully and take breaks. Make a conscious effort to blink fully. A practical prompt is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. The AAO recommends it as a way to give your eyes a break from near work, not as a diagnostic test.
- Address dryness if it is present. The AAO suggests artificial tears when eyes feel dry. If you wear contact lenses during long screen sessions, taking a break from them and wearing glasses instead may help. Follow the product directions and your clinician’s advice.
- Reassess your glasses if blur continues. Arrange an eye exam and describe how far away the screen is, how long you use it, and whether the blur affects near, intermediate, or distance vision. Ask whether your prescription, lens type, or fitting suits that task.
Computer glasses and blue-light glasses are not the same
| Option | What it is intended to address | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Prescription computer glasses | Clearer, more comfortable focus at a chosen intermediate working distance | The AAO puts typical computer-screen distance at about 20–26 inches. Discuss your actual setup and whether you need to shift between near, intermediate, and far viewing. |
| Blue-light-filtering glasses | Filtering some blue light from screens | The AAO says screen blue light has not been shown to cause eye disease, and that studies suggest blue-light-blocking glasses do not improve digital eye-strain symptoms. It does not recommend special blue-light eyewear for computer use. |
So, if the issue is unclear focus at your work distance, ask an eye-care professional whether prescription computer glasses fit your needs. Blue-light filters are not a substitute for a task-appropriate prescription, break habits, or assessment of persistent symptoms.

Do not rely on a monitor accessory or a change in glasses to diagnose an eye condition. The AAO advises seeing an ophthalmologist if your eyes are consistently red, blurry, or watery, or become sensitive to light or painful. Persistent blur despite glasses or contacts also warrants an eye exam, as the National Eye Institute advises.
