How Long Will a Home Battery Run a Refrigerator, Router, and Other Essentials?

Estimate how long a battery can run a refrigerator, router, and other essentials by comparing usable energy with the combined average load—and checking inverter and outage limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed runtime: divide the battery’s usable energy by the average combined power draw of the refrigerator, router, and anything else connected. Then check that the inverter can handle the appliances’ running and startup demands. The result is an estimate, not a guarantee, because loads change and some stored energy may not reach AC devices.

What determines how long a battery will last?

Two ratings answer two different questions. Energy capacity, usually stated in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh), tells you how much energy a battery stores. Power capacity, stated in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW), tells you how quickly the system can deliver it. A battery needs enough energy for the desired duration and enough output power to run the connected appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics explains the distinction and notes that conversion and retrieval involve energy losses.

If a specification gives only the battery’s rated capacity, do not treat that figure as energy available to household AC appliances. Look for the manufacturer’s usable-energy figure and any stated assumptions about the inverter or reserve. Do not apply an invented, universal loss percentage: the actual energy available depends on the system and its specifications.

The quotient is only a starting point. It does not account by itself for a battery reserve or shutdown threshold, changes in appliance use, inverter limits, or the refrigerator’s startup behavior. It also assumes the loads included in the denominator are the only loads drawing power.

How to estimate the refrigerator’s energy use

Find the model-specific figure

Identify the refrigerator’s brand, model, and, where relevant, year. The DOE’s refrigerator and freezer energy-rating lookup lets users search by appliance type, brand, model, or year. Its guidance also explains where to find appliance information. A model-specific annual energy figure is more useful than assuming all refrigerators draw the same amount.

As an illustration of the lookup’s data—not a typical refrigerator result—the DOE guidance gives an example of 537 kWh per year for an Amana freezer manufactured in 2000, assuming its seal is in good condition. That example is for a freezer and should not be used as a general refrigerator estimate.

Convert annual energy to an average load

To turn an annual kWh figure into a rough average daily use, divide it by 365. To express the daily figure as average watts, multiply kWh per day by 1,000 and divide by 24. For the DOE freezer example, 537 kWh per year works out to about 1.47 kWh per day, or about 61 watts averaged across the day. That arithmetic describes an average; it does not mean the appliance draws 61 watts continuously.

A refrigerator’s compressor cycles, so its moment-to-moment draw changes. An annual rating or daily average does not show every operating cycle or the brief demand when the compressor starts. ENERGY STAR notes that actual refrigerator energy use varies with conditions including room temperature, door openings, and how full the appliance is. Consult its refrigerator guidance when interpreting a rating as an estimate rather than a promise about a particular home.

Use a representative measurement if available

If you have an appliance energy meter, measuring the refrigerator over a representative period can refine the estimate for your appliance and conditions. Use the measured energy over that period to work out an average load, and make sure the period captures ordinary use rather than an unusual day. A measurement improves the load estimate; it does not guarantee future runtime or remove the need to check the inverter’s output rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add the router and every other backup load

List the devices that will actually run during the outage, not just the refrigerator and router. Use each device’s label or a measurement for its power draw; router consumption varies by model, and the sources here do not establish a standard router wattage. If you estimate loads separately, combine their average watts before dividing the usable battery energy.

  • Include every appliance or device plugged into the battery or backed-up circuit during the same period.
  • Base each load on its own rating or measurement rather than a generic wattage assumption.
  • Keep the time basis consistent: an average refrigerator load should be combined with comparable average loads, not confused with a brief startup draw.

An omitted device makes the denominator too small and the calculated runtime too long. If the set of connected devices changes during an outage, the original estimate no longer describes the new load.

Worked example: turn usable energy into estimated hours

Suppose a battery provides 1,000 Wh of usable AC energy and the measured average combined load of the refrigerator, router, and other connected essentials is 100 W. The simple estimate is 1,000 Wh ÷ 100 W = 10 hours. This is arithmetic for a hypothetical load, not a tested result or a claim about a particular battery or household.

That estimate is before any further adjustment for reserve settings or changing loads. If the battery’s usable-energy figure already reflects the manufacturer’s stated system assumptions, use it as specified rather than subtracting an unsupported extra allowance. If the figure is only a battery nameplate rating, first find out how much energy the manufacturer says is usable by AC loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same method works in kWh and kW: convert units consistently, or use Wh and W as in the formula. For example, a load estimate expressed in watts cannot be divided directly into a capacity expressed in kilowatt-hours without converting one of the values.

Check inverter output and refrigerator startup

Energy capacity alone cannot establish that a battery can run a refrigerator. Check the system’s continuous AC output against the running loads and look for any stated surge capability. A motor-driven appliance may need more power briefly when starting than while running, so an average-watt calculation cannot verify that the inverter will start it.

The startup requirement depends on the refrigerator and system. The sources available here do not establish one standard refrigerator startup-surge figure; do not size an inverter around a generic number. If the battery documentation lists surge power, also check how long that output is available and whether the refrigerator’s requirements are known. When those details are missing, the runtime arithmetic may still be useful, but compatibility is not established.

  • Runtime looks adequate but the refrigerator will not start: investigate inverter output and surge capability, not just stored energy.
  • The estimate is much longer than the observed runtime: check whether the battery’s usable AC energy was used, whether other loads were connected, and whether reserve or shutdown settings limited discharge.
  • Runtime varies from one outage to another: compare the actual appliance use and conditions, including room temperature and door openings, with the period used for the estimate.

Portable power stations and installed home batteries are different setups

A portable power station is a battery-and-inverter unit used for selected plug-in loads. To assess one for refrigerator backup, compare usable Wh, continuous AC output, any specified surge rating and duration, available outlets, charging method, and the load assumptions behind any manufacturer runtime estimate. A capacity figure alone cannot tell you how many hours a refrigerator will run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An installed residential battery can be designed to support selected circuits or a broader set of household loads. Which circuits stay powered depends on the inverter, wiring, transfer and islanding arrangement, and system design. Do not assume that every home circuit—or even a particular appliance—will receive backup power just because a battery is installed.

An appliance energy meter can help refine a load estimate, but it is a measurement aid, not a backup battery or a guarantee of runtime. For any comparison between systems, keep the same measures in view: usable energy, continuous output, specified surge capability and duration, conversion assumptions, outage operation, supported circuits, and the load profile used for a runtime claim. DOE’s 2013 Electricity Storage Handbook provides additional background on electricity storage systems.

Will rooftop solar keep the refrigerator running in an outage?

Not necessarily. DOE says rooftop solar systems generally switch off when grid power is lost; a solar array connected to the grid is not automatically a source of outage power. The system needs suitable storage and inverter configuration to operate independently. As DOE puts it in its Solar and Resilience Basics guidance: “For solar panels to produce power on their own, they need two things: a properly configured inverter and a storage system.”

Before relying on solar-plus-storage for a refrigerator, confirm that the particular system can disconnect from the grid and support the intended loads during an outage. DOE’s The Road to Resilience with Rooftop Solar also discusses why rooftop solar alone generally does not provide backup when the grid fails. Whether a refrigerator is on a supported circuit depends on the installation.

A practical sizing and outage-planning checklist

  1. Identify the refrigerator. Record its model and look up its energy rating, or measure its consumption over a representative period.
  2. Estimate its average load. Convert annual or daily energy to a consistent average, while remembering that this does not show compressor startup demand.
  3. Measure or verify the other loads. Use labels or measurements for the router and each additional device you plan to power.
  4. Find the battery’s usable energy. Use the manufacturer’s stated usable capacity for AC loads where available; do not substitute nameplate capacity without checking what is deliverable.
  5. Calculate an initial runtime. Divide usable Wh by total average W and label the result as an estimate.
  6. Verify power compatibility. Check continuous AC output and any stated surge capability against the connected appliances, including refrigerator startup.
  7. Confirm outage behavior. For an installed system, verify backed-up circuits and grid-islanding capability; for a portable unit, confirm the correct appliance connection and operating limits.
  8. Revisit the estimate when conditions change. A different load list, appliance use pattern, reserve setting, or battery configuration changes the result.

What a broad refrigerator figure can—and cannot—tell you

A DOE project page about a high-efficiency refrigerator with cold energy storage reports typical household refrigerator consumption of 1.5–2.0 kWh per day in its 2023 project context. That is a broad illustration from that page, not a guarantee for an individual refrigerator or a current census of household appliances. The page also reports that more than 100 million refrigerators are used in U.S. homes; treat that as the page’s reported figure rather than a current count. See the DOE project page for its context.

Dividing 1.5–2.0 kWh per day by 24 hours gives an average of about 62.5–83.3 W over the day. That conversion can help illustrate how daily energy relates to average power, but it does not capture a particular refrigerator’s cycles, startup demand, or the router and other loads. Use the actual model or a representative measurement when sizing a backup for a specific home.
