There is no universal number of days for keeping AI agent logs. Set a documented retention period for each log class according to its purpose, applicable legal and contractual requirements, security and incident-response needs, and privacy risk. Keep only the information needed, protect it while retained, and delete logs and their copies when the required period ends.
Why AI agent logs need their own retention rules
An agent trace can reveal more than a conventional system event record. Depending on what you capture, it may include prompts and responses, tool or API calls, state changes, errors, timing, and identifiers that connect activity to a user, session, or system. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency recommends recording these kinds of events to monitor agent behavior, including interactions with models, files, memory, tools, MCP, and external actions. Its guidance describes what to log, not how long to retain it: Securing Agentic AI.

That combination creates competing needs: enough evidence to investigate an incident or diagnose a failure, but not an indefinite store of sensitive or personal information. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet says logs and their copies should not be destroyed before a required retention period ends, or kept beyond it. Legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations can affect what that period is.

Do not treat every record an agent produces as one undifferentiated log. Inventory what is collected, why it is needed, who owns it, and who can access it. Then assign a retention trigger and deletion method to each class.

| Log class | Examples | Retention decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Security audit trails | Authentication and authorization events, policy violations, and security-relevant actions | Determine how long the records must remain available for security review, incident response, and any applicable requirements. |
| Tool and API activity | Tool calls, external actions, results, timestamps, and contextual identifiers | Keep the fields needed to reconstruct consequential actions; assess whether arguments or results contain sensitive data. |
| Prompts, outputs, and agent traces | Inputs, model or agent outputs, state and memory changes, and interaction context | Decide whether full content is necessary or whether a minimized, masked, or otherwise sanitized record meets the purpose. |
| Operational diagnostics | Errors, timing, performance measurements, and temporary debug records | Set a period that supports troubleshooting without turning temporary diagnostic data into a permanent archive. |
| Business records | Agent-generated records that document a business decision, transaction, or other activity | Apply the record’s own schedule and obligations; do not assume the agent platform’s log setting defines them. |
This classification is an implementation approach based on purpose-driven retention guidance, not a prescribed schedule. NIST’s audit-trail guidance says system managers and administrators, with security personnel, should determine how long audit trail data is maintained, whether on the system or in archives. It also emphasizes timely review and protecting confidentiality and integrity: NIST SP 800-12, Chapter 18.
How to choose a retention period
- Define the purpose. Specify what question each log class must answer, such as identifying a security event, diagnosing an operational failure, or documenting a business transaction.
- Check the requirements that apply. Review laws and regulations for the relevant jurisdiction and data, contracts, records schedules, and any legal holds. Without details about the deployment and data categories, no precise legal period can be stated.
- Assess security and privacy risk. Consider the sensitivity of the recorded fields, the harm from unauthorized access or disclosure, and the value of having the records available for investigations. NIST’s authentication guidance for verifier records offers a related example: where retention is not mandatory, it calls for risk management that includes privacy and security assessments, and says subscribers should be informed of the policy. That is an analogy for agent logs, not a universal agent-log rule: NIST SP 800-63-4.
- Choose the minimum useful record. Decide which fields are genuinely necessary. Avoid routinely storing credentials, secrets, or unnecessary personal data in prompts, tool arguments, and outputs; use masking or sanitization where appropriate.
- Set a period and trigger for each class. Document when retention starts—for example, when a record is created or a case closes—and when scheduled deletion must occur. Record the owner and the approved access group alongside the period.
- Apply the policy to every copy. Include temporary debug logs, backups, exports, archives, and records sent to another logging system. Define how each is deleted, and how an applicable legal hold is handled as a controlled exception.
- Review the policy when conditions change. Reassess it when agent capabilities, data flows, applicable rules, or contracts change.
Do you need to log every tool call?
Not necessarily every detail. For oversight and troubleshooting, useful records may include the action taken, relevant input and output, state changes, errors, timing, and enough context to identify the interaction. The right level of detail depends on the purpose and risk. A record that says a tool was called may be insufficient to investigate an unauthorized action; storing every raw argument and result may expose secrets or personal data unnecessarily. Choose fields deliberately, and avoid collecting content that is not needed for the stated purpose.

Can you keep traces forever for debugging?
Indefinite retention should not be the default. Debugging value alone does not establish that all trace content must be kept permanently. OWASP’s guidance applies to temporary debug logs as well as other log data and copies: retain them for the required period, but do not keep them beyond it. If longer-term analysis is useful, consider whether a minimized or sanitized record can serve that purpose without retaining the original sensitive content.
Protect logs during their retention period
Retention is only one part of log management. OWASP also recommends protecting logs against unauthorized access, modification, and deletion. For agent traces, apply safeguards to the live logging system and to transfers, backups, exports, and archives.

Platform retention settings are not policy recommendations
Logging platforms expose different retention capabilities, but a product setting does not determine the right period for your agent records.
| Platform example | Documented availability or setting | What it does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud.gov | Searchable logs remain available for six months and retrievable through twelve months after creation. | These are Cloud.gov platform windows, aligned with its stated interpretation of OMB M-26-14, not a general AI-agent retention rule. Cloud.gov recommends independent exports when an agency needs mission-specific eDiscovery, legal, or extended retention: Cloud.gov logs documentation. |
| Google Cloud log buckets | Retention can be configured from one day to 3,650 days. | This is a product capability, not a recommended duration. The selected bucket setting applies to all logs in that bucket, regardless of log type or whether they were copied from elsewhere: Google Cloud log buckets documentation. |
These examples illustrate why a platform’s maximum or default window should not be mistaken for a retention policy. A bucket may hold several kinds of records with different purposes and requirements, so the configured setting needs to fit the records placed there.

What the guidance does and does not establish
NIST’s final SP 800-92, the Guide to Computer Security Log Management, was published in September 2006. NIST describes SP 800-92 Rev. 1 as an initial public draft published October 11, 2023, focused on high-level, organization-wide planning; it is not a final replacement for the 2006 guide. See SP 800-92 and the NIST log management project page.
The cited guidance supports a purpose-based, documented decision, not a universal number of days for AI agent logs. The exact period depends on the log’s purpose, the data it contains, applicable requirements, and the organization’s risk decisions.
